I’ve had to switch over - so disappointed.

The girls are supposed to be 12, 14, 16 and 18. The actors are nearly my age and similar in age to the actor playing Marmee. And they have all got different accents.

The opening credits reminded me of something which I couldn't place, but it's just clicked.

They are almost identical to the opening credits of Katie Morag, right down to the seagull and the music. Very appropriate for a series set in the Scottish islands; not so much for one set in inland Massachusetts...

Heratnumber7 · 27/12/2017 21:11

Well, I'm happy to say, I'm flipping loving the series. I just wish they'd go through Jo's Boys and Little Men too.

BitOfFun · 27/12/2017 21:27

It's grown on me. My daughter was having trouble telling the girls apart at first, and I said to her that Jo was the one who looks like a young Uma Thurman- I've only found out she's actually her daughter from this thread Xmas Grin.

Laurie is perfectly cast for me- he's so handsome and charming. I think that his marrying Amy is even more of a travesty that the pairing of Ron and Hermione Xmas Angry!

Balfe · 27/12/2017 21:37

Nooooo, Laurie is far too old! He's about 40!

I do like it but it's not my favourite ever. The shots and cinematography seem very planned, as if someone's mournful Tumblr or Pinterest has been turned into video!

cathyandclare · 27/12/2017 21:53

I'm loving it, although was worried having read this thread. Laurie has only just left uni, so way, way, younger than 40. Do you really think he looks old?
DD met him at a college party and reports that he looks just as good in real life!

Balfe · 27/12/2017 21:59

He definitely doesn't look in his early 20s imo (although he is very good looking).

Buxbaum · 27/12/2017 22:00

He's 22...

How old are you, seven? Jonah Hauer-King is 22.

Balfe · 27/12/2017 22:06

Jesus! He's not!

Poor lad Grin

cathyandclare · 27/12/2017 22:08

I'm sure he's very insecure about his looks Grin
I think he's going to be a big star in the future, he has star quality imo ( although I could be dazzled by the dimples)

SquishyMcNuggetFace · 27/12/2017 22:08

I had super high hopes for this but I've been disappointed. Wynona Rider did, IMO, a great job capturing the spunkiness of Jo and Gabriel Byrne was the perfect professor. Without those two actors I'm finding it hard to love.

Will still watch to the end though, any little women is good little women.

Oblomov17 · 27/12/2017 22:19

Had no idea she was Uma Thurman's daughter.
It is a bit rubbish.

magimedi · 27/12/2017 22:32

Still loving it - eventhought they have played around with the chronology of it - am sure Marmee was there over the episode of the pickled limes.

I still think they have the spirit of it right - and I think Amy is wonderfully cast - never, ever, liked her!

BestIsWest · 27/12/2017 22:33

It’s grown on me a bit now. I agree that they should have cast two different actresses to play the Amy.

Quite interested in the Louisa M Alcott autobiography now. I adored Little Women as a child and reread it many times but read it again a few years back and found it a bit dull.

BestIsWest · 27/12/2017 22:33

Never liked Amy either.

Brokenbiscuit · 27/12/2017 23:05

I'm a big fan of the books, and I'm really enjoying this adaptation. Sure, it isn't 100% true to the books but these things never are, and as a previous poster said, they have captured the spirit of the books.

Still can't forgive Jo for turning Laurie down though. She should have married him.Sad

That's true, deckoff, but I think Laurie would have been a better man if he'd married Jo.

CiderwithBuda · 28/12/2017 05:41

I quite liked it. I read it often as a child but I'm now 53 so it was a long time ago. I'd forgotten Jo doesn't marry Laurie!

Adaptations always leave some things out or focus on things you hadn't paid much attention to. As they say you can't please all of th people all of the time!

It's made me want to re-read the books.

I watched with MIL and we both enjoyed it. She will watch tonight's in her own home too - like someone up thread! She struggled with hearing it. But she didn't talk through it which was Good!

We both thought Angela Lansbury was fab. Was imagining her with the Dowagr Countess in Downton. They would have been fab together!

MsGameandWatching · 28/12/2017 13:07

I've just put this on and immediately came to see if there was a thread. All seems a bit What Men Think Women Get Up To In Their Bedrooms Hmm

QuiQuaiQuod · 28/12/2017 14:20

1st episode seemed disjointed to me, but it grew on me, Ive satyed with it and looking forward to tonight.

The guys who play laurie and Brooke- yumm-mmy!

Love Michael Gambon and Angela Legend Lansbury

Having watched Victoria on Xm,as day, seemed very similar, some of the settings, costumes, even storylines!

really? Laurie marries Amy? canmt stand her, what a bitch, birning Jos papers.

the one who plays Meg, what have i seen her in before? cant place her.

QuiQuaiQuod · 28/12/2017 14:22

I have to watch tv with subtitles on and sound right down (need to hear DCs breathing in bed- gets very shallow)so not affected by any bad sound quality.

Polarbearflavour · 28/12/2017 17:02

Meh. I find the accents really annoying. It’s a bit silly and preachy and some of the characters are a bit smug.

Dozer · 28/12/2017 17:16

Enjoyed it a lot. Agree the actors are too old: presume this is so they can do the scenes as adults with the same actors.

Jo and Laurie would have been incompatible in marriage and she knew that.

The book professor was old and overweight but she still fancied him!
