I’ve had to switch over - so disappointed.

The girls are supposed to be 12, 14, 16 and 18. The actors are nearly my age and similar in age to the actor playing Marmee. And they have all got different accents.

I loved it,finally got to see it.

I grew up with my great grandmother's copy, the most gorgeous massive beautifully illustrated book which she won at school prize giving in 1893.

I thought I was Jo as a childBlush

honeyroar · 03/01/2018 00:55

I liked it - much more than I expected to after reading other reviews. I've read all the books and seen all previous films (didn't love the Winona one anyway). I wish they'd make the other books into films. I remember Little Men being my favourite, about the school. I can't even remember what the fourth was nowadays!

buggerthebotox · 03/01/2018 13:34

Fox that's lovely! What a nice thing to remember your gran by.

I thought I was Jo too. The other characters seemed girly and insipid. The bit where she cuts off her hair is the only bit I remember from the whole book!.

nigelschristmasham · 03/01/2018 13:39

I liked it except for the portrayal of Amy who was in no way likeable in this adaptation. That said I would think it's quite hard to get it right with that character.
I still don't buy them getting married and didn't in the book either...it's always been one of the great literary wrongs of my lifeGrin

squoosh · 03/01/2018 13:46

Me either. When I see Amy and Laurie get together (in any adaptation) I think 'nerr err' (Family Fortunes style buzzer sound). It feels fake. It makes sense that Alcott only put them together out of irritation.

Although I'd personally prefer sexy, older, educated German professor to the spoilt boy next door that doesn't mean I approve of pain in the arse Amy falling on her feet like that. Pah.

squoosh · 03/01/2018 13:52

Overall I couldn't decide if I really liked this adaptation or not. Admittedly I was watching it through a Quality Street fog and wasn't employing all my critical faculties. They certainly looked too old. Amy was too vampish and it looked a bit too modern and clean. But there were some good performances and Emily Watson is always a joy.

BertrandRussell · 03/01/2018 13:57

Oh, I think Amy and Laurie works. He wanted someone to pet and look after. She wanted someone to pet her and look after her. And she wanted money as well- and he wanted someone to spend his money on. Both of them loved beautiful things He and Jo would have made each other miserable.

squoosh · 03/01/2018 14:01

One thing that Little Women always does to me though is give me an urge to try pickled limes! Can they really be that delicious? Hmm

BertrandRussell · 03/01/2018 14:04

My brother makes them. Some people find them practically addictive. I think they are OK. But a strange taste for children, I would have thought.

squoosh · 03/01/2018 14:07

I'm going to have to try them. If they are worth getting caned for and giving up one's education for then they really must have an addictive quality!

I'll ask db for his recipe. They have salt in them-and are very sharp and salty.

Clawdy · 03/01/2018 18:24

Nooooo! Jo and Laurie would have been brilliant together - opposites in some ways, but totally loving each other, tolerant of the differences, with lovely , quirky children... Louisa M, I will never, ever forgive you.......

gabsdot · 07/01/2018 23:00

I finally just finished watching this. I really liked it.
I think Maya Hawkes is my favourite Jo every. She was wonderful. She looked just how I imagine Jo.
Very enjoyable.

JeremiahBackflip · 09/01/2018 22:27

Just watching the last episode now.

Sob.

I love Laurie (I love all the Lauries. I have a Laurie soft spot).

I only read the book last year and loved it when I got to Meg being a mum.

Even though Beth is my second least favourite character (Amy being least favourite. Because she marries Laurie), I fall apart every time she dies.

Hmmalittlefishy · 10/01/2018 14:27

Finally caught up and watched it! Agree with alot of the comments. Particularly missing lots of the bit with Jo being away and meeting professor bhaer etc

I think by having only one actor playing Amy (unlike the winnona ryder one) r it misses that amy has grown up since Laurie first met her and saw her as a little sister figure. Them both loosing Beth and being so far from home draws them together but it's that he also sees her in a new light and Jo very much says to find someone new to love (although I never think she meant her sister!)

I know they showed a few minutes at the end but I wish there was an adaptation of the final 2 books. I think that shows the matches were right with them all and there was lots of fun I seem to remember

Bea · 10/01/2018 22:20

I've just caught up with it... Little dubious at first as I love the winona ryder film... But gradually won over... It always strikes me how similar the laurie /Jo and Gilbert /Anne romance is... They both declare love (laurie /Gilbert) but get turned down... You don't love me... You'll find someone... Can't we just be friends... The difference being Anne married Gilbert (sigh! Thank the lord! I love Gilbert Blythe!)...

Absolutely agree with the PP who mentioned they were going for the style of Anne With An E... Which I recommend To you all... Again! I was highly dubious at first! (what could beat the perfection of the Sullivan 80's production!!??) but it's just lovely in a different way!...

Gilbert Blythe wasn’t spoiled like Laurie, although had workaholic tendencies!
