The 'jolly good smacked bottom' is an actual line from a sixties episode. No, he didn't do it! Yes, times have changed - a 70s episode has an English actor playing a chinese man. And tom bakers antics with one particular monster are unbelievable.

That said, in fifty years we will probably jaw drop at a character whose only attribute was being gay, which was all she talked about. More cardboard than bonnie Langford , the previous worst companion ever.

I think Moffat did it as a bit of a fanboy joke.

I think Moffat did it because he’s a bit of a twat.

Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart (‘The Brig’) was a major character in the Classic series - he first met the Second Doctor when he was a Colonel, dealing with the Yeti invasion of the London Underground, and again, now a Brigadier, when the Cybermen invaded a few years later.
Then, when the Third Doctor was exiled to Earth, he met the Brig, who was now in charge of UNIT in the UK, and worked as his Scientific Advisor during his exile and after he regenerated into Four. The Brig appeared again with the Fifth and Seventh Doctors, and in the Sarah Jane Adventures. He also met the First Doctor in the anniversary episodes ‘The Three Doctors’ and ‘The Five Doctors’. He’s also appeared in several Big Finish audio adventures with various Doctors and companions.
He was mentioned a few times in the new series (now Sir Alistair) usually as being ‘stuck in Peru’ or somewhere when the Doctor was interacting with UNIT. In The Wedding of River Song, Eleven tried to call him in for help, but was told he had died a few months before (an acknowledgement that Nicholas Courtney, who played him had recently died)
His final return was in Death in Heaven, when Missy, (who as the Master had been a frequent antagonist of the Brig) revived Earth’s dead as Cybermen. As a Cyberman, he saved Kate Stewart, his daughter, when she fell from a plane, and blasted Missy with his cyber weapon.
