Squigglypig · 20/11/2017 07:44

Kerala Grin

Battleax · 20/11/2017 07:56

Nobody tell Julian Fellowes. He'll be even more unbearable Smile

KERALA1 · 20/11/2017 08:01

I've read some of fellowes other books - enjoyable fluff but certainly no EM Forster!

Battleax · 20/11/2017 08:07

Indeed, but I guarantee he won't really realise that himself. Have you seen him interviewed?

southeastdweller · 20/11/2017 08:16

I was hoping we'd be spared an appearance of Tracey Ullmann last night but then she appeared in the last few minutes.

MM looks just 5-10 years older than the actors playing his children.

Footle · 20/11/2017 08:47

No Downton. By George, she’s got it!

SoupDragon · 20/11/2017 08:49

What on earth was the restaurant Margaret took Mr W to?

Footle · 20/11/2017 08:51

Eustace Miles , the Cranks of its day.

Ijustlovefood · 20/11/2017 19:34

Disagree that Matthew M is bad casting. I really like him in it.

Ijustlovefood · 20/11/2017 19:44

Didn't Jackie say something about if Leonard will marry her? So they're not married? Or have I got that wrong?

madeyemoodysmum · 20/11/2017 20:01

Yes. Lenard and Jackie are not married

HaHaHmm · 20/11/2017 20:07

Leonard and Jacky are not married at the beginning of the novel. She is thirty-three but he is only twenty and can’t marry her until he is of age.

fedup2017 · 20/11/2017 20:16

Well I love it.
Have to admit a HUGE crush on M M which helps. I think perhaps I was born 80 years too late......
Would love for the bbc to do a room with a view next.

VanillaSugar · 20/11/2017 20:19

Haven't watched the second episode, but has MM stopped smiling yet?

Dozer · 20/11/2017 20:47

Mr wilcox is not meant to be smiley, young and attractive - matthew mcfadyen FFS! His character was a right PITA so perhaps they made him younger to have some kind of appeal.

Hate Forster at school and hated studying the book at A level, don’t want to watch this but will enjoy the MN thread!

AdalindSchade · 20/11/2017 20:58

Mr Wilcox was grim. I really don't know what Margaret sees in him.

A room with a view would be AMAZING

I loved the book and film. I watched the film first and remember being shocked when I realised that George kissed Lucy on the cheek Grin all that palaver about a kiss on the cheek. EM Forster was a bit of a prude.

woodhill · 20/11/2017 21:38

Mr W was more old and crusty, MM looks too youthful and agree he looks too close in age to his dcs

Clawdy · 20/11/2017 21:50

Mentioned up thread, Room With A View was televised in 2007. It was disappointing, with a changed ending.

AdalindSchade · 20/11/2017 22:34

Really? How rubbish. Let's pretend that didn't happen.

Taytocrisps · 21/11/2017 08:43

I watched the second episode last night. I still think the pace is a bit odd. Margaret hardly knew Mrs. Wilcox yet Mrs. W. wanted to leave Howards End to her. When Mr. Wilcox and Evie called in unexpectedly, Margaret and Helen told them that they like Leonard very much. But they hardly know him at this point and they didn't even remember him when he called to the house to apologize for Jackie's visit. Again, I haven't read the book so perhaps the pace is better in the book.

I find it odd that Margaret is so attracted by Mr. Wilcox when he's the antithesis of her socialist beliefs. But I appreciate that she didn't have a lot of opportunities to meet eligible bachelors. A previous poster said that she was less attractive in the book. Also, if she marries Mr. Wilcox it will solve her housing issue.

I'll continue watching to find out what happens.

QueenOfTheAndals · 21/11/2017 10:01

A previous poster said that she was less attractive in the book

Ah that might explain it. Hayley Atwell and Emma Thompson are both very attractive women!

CoolCarrie · 21/11/2017 11:13

They killed George off in the First World War, and Lucy goes back to Florence alone in the BBC version which was crap. Better sticking to the lovely film.

KERALA1 · 21/11/2017 11:20

It made me wish I had been an Edwardian. I would love to swan about to concerts, write letters, stay at randoms lovely houses and wear long skirts. Appreciate I mean rich Edwardian being a poor one woudl have been crap.

QueenOfTheAndals · 21/11/2017 13:35

Yes, it's funny how the Schlegels are considered a bit below the Wilcoxes in social class but still, neither of them ever have to work - they just write letters and go to concerts!

diddl · 21/11/2017 20:50

"Margaret hardly knew Mrs. Wilcox yet Mrs. W. wanted to leave Howards End to her. "

Did Mrs W know that the Schlegels were going to have to move?

I'm not sure about that but her own family didn't care about HE & I think that she feels that Margaret would.
