Anyone watching?

OP posts:
diddl · 15/11/2017 10:08

Thanks! I've got the book but didn't remember that.

BitOfFun · 15/11/2017 16:56

I've just come back for a re-read- really interesting points, thanks to everyone, especially Cory.

VanillaSugar · 15/11/2017 18:54

I think the the location used for Howards End is the house used in The Forsyte Say as Jolyon (Rupert Graves)'s house. This was a 1990s production.

woodhill · 15/11/2017 19:28

MM has a romance with Margaret not Helen and MM is too young imo

AdalindSchade · 15/11/2017 19:57

Matthew Macfadyen is just really crap casting.

southeastdweller · 15/11/2017 19:58

Too young and his Henry, so far, lacks the cruelty and steel of Henry on the book. Maybe this will be another element that’s been messed up in this adaptation, we’ll see.

Garlicansapphire · 15/11/2017 20:02

I've read the book a long time ago. I liked it.

QueenOfTheAndals · 15/11/2017 22:29

MM has a romance with Margaret not Helen

I got the sisters names confused but I was referring to the older one.

woodhill · 16/11/2017 13:47

She was meant to be a bit of an old maid in the book and grateful that someone wanted her, she was described as toothy if I remember

Scabbersley · 16/11/2017 13:51

I thought dd2 would like it but we are going to watch the film instead. The film is loads better. The TV adaptation was miscast and boring.

WipsGlitter · 19/11/2017 21:27

Anyone watching tonight?

IrenetheQuaint · 19/11/2017 21:32

Yes, I think it is good (apart from the dreadful background music). It really conveys the Schlegels' pseudish tendencies and the uncomfortableness of everyone's emotions. Not as enjoyable as the film but truer to the book.

JamieFrasersArse · 19/11/2017 21:42

So is Tibby meant to be on the spectrum?

IrenetheQuaint · 19/11/2017 21:43

I thought Tibby was just meant to be a self-absorbed adolescent!

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/11/2017 21:53

He appears to have no filter, what with what he was saying to Leonard.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 19/11/2017 21:58

Ha! I've just come on here to ask if Tibby is supposed to be ill, if there is anything wrong with him? He isn't like the others

Cagliostro · 19/11/2017 22:02

Signing in as this looks great. I have never read or seen it before

AdalindSchade · 19/11/2017 22:03

Tibby is a spoilt bohemian brat who thinks ideas and intellectualism are more important than social niceties. So is Helen a bit tbh.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/11/2017 22:07

Whatever he is, he's an annoying little shit!

Clawdy · 19/11/2017 22:09

Some of the scenes tonight were very confusing, with everybody talking loudly over each other. I know it was for effect, but it was a bit over the top.

KERALA1 · 19/11/2017 22:31

Did for a level - bringing back memories. Perfect Sunday night viewing though dh hates mr Wilcox

dairyfarmerswife · 19/11/2017 22:34

Hmm. Enjoyable, but no Downton. Too hard to follow and they are a bit pleased with themselves. I haven't read the book but kind of wish I had - suspect I am missing some of the nuances of the story just watching.

Battleax · 19/11/2017 22:40

You're not supposed to adore them. It was social observation, not feel good Sunday night telly rubbish Grin

Garlicansapphire · 19/11/2017 23:03

I'm enjoying it, my DD was laughing a lot at the brother's antics (and then annoyingly asking questions as she didn't pay attention to the first ten minutes or watch the first episode). I think it has a nice feel and I like the Shelgel's despite their misplaced desire to 'help' others whilst patronising them with their adoption.

Although I've read the book I don't remember any of it - except that feeling that the house Howards End is just as much a character as any of the people. So I cant tell how faithful the adaptation is. And I'm ignoring my usual irritation with the drippy Matthew MacFadygen (dunno about my spelling there...!).

KERALA1 · 20/11/2017 07:42

EM Forster surely spinning in his grave to hear an adaptation of his masterpiece arguably one of the top 100 finestEnglish books ever written described as "no Downton" Grin
