Can't see a new thread??

OP posts:
CotswoldStrife · 28/10/2017 23:23

DO - I think Simon and I also think Joe might fall victim to the mid-table lack of votes thing, but would easily win over the judges rather than Simon.

CeeBeeBee · 28/10/2017 23:25

Gemma is 32 and Mollie is 30.
Jonnie Peacock is 24, making him the youngest, followed by Aston who is 29.

Are they the young hip trendies?

Anyway, I think Gemma has been improving week after week but tonight's dance lacked something and felt clumsy at the end.
Disappointed for Jonnie, I think he must have froze at the idea of performing the cha. He may be in danger of being in the dance off.

EvilRinguBitch · 28/10/2017 23:34

Spoiler is finally out btw.

NumberEightyOne · 29/10/2017 02:10

It was a disappointing evening except for a few notable exceptions. I agree that the costumes were a bit underwhelming. They don't seem to try much when it comes to Ruth. They just put her in an OK looking frock.

TheDrsDocMartens · 29/10/2017 02:45

Jeanette’s makeup and costume was good. I didn’t recognise her Blush

NumberEightyOne · 29/10/2017 02:51

Jeanette and Oti's costumes were good.

MrsJamin · 29/10/2017 06:09

I actually think it's a bit of a rotten year for SCD, dance wise. It feels like the dodgy dancers should have gone by now but there's still loads left just getting 4s & 5s.

Petalflowers · 29/10/2017 07:40

MrsJ _ I thought the same.

MrsJamin · 29/10/2017 07:46

I have evidence of the scores not being as high this year (thanks to wikipedia)!
Last series - week 5 judges' points' average per dancer = 29.3, week 6 average = 31.1
This series - week 5 average = 28.4 (adjusted upwards as bruno not there), week 6 average 27.5. - so 4 points down on last year, a bad halloween, and actually worse than last week! Halloween Hmm

ImListening · 29/10/2017 08:25

I voted for 2 x Susan 1 x Ruth.

Not keen on Davood - something about him or his partner.

Johnnie wasn’t good last night.

Alexandra & Aston are too stageschool for me.

Debbie shouldn’t have been allowed to take part.

Interesting how they said they missed Brian I thought.

EvilRinguBitch · 29/10/2017 08:33

There was a limit to what they could do costume-wise with Ruth. It’s a lovely song for a quickstep and a great natural Halloween link, but the whole point of Samantha is that she’s a very ordinary (pretty) 1950s/60s suburban housewife. Anything other than a nice frock would be ruining the theme.

NumberEightyOne · 29/10/2017 08:37

Yes.EvilRing but she seems to get the short straw every week to be honest.

Theromanempire · 29/10/2017 08:59

Had a bit of a shock last night...we watch on on record but when DH went to put it on, it was still live on BBC and he pressed the wrong button and we started watching the live stream. We saw Bruno say to Debbie how disappointed he was in her before we switched over so we assumed she had been shockingly bad...how wrong we were Grin I had to say that when I saw the song choice earlier in the week, I could not see the connection between the song and Halloween...but very clever work by Giovanni as it was perfect. I think Giovanni has absolutely proved himself this season and has been the best partner for Debbie. I dread to think what Brenda or Antonio would have done with her!

The80sweregreat · 29/10/2017 09:01

I like the Halloween special as the effects and costumes are really brilliant. However, last night I thought that they all looked tired ( apart from Alexandra and Aston) Debbie was good, but even she looked tired a bit towards the end I thought ( still wonderful for a woman her age to do that dance though!) I cant warm to her at all, but she is an an amazing dancer.
I hope Simon goes out tonight as he seemed really deflated.

Theromanempire · 29/10/2017 09:55

Just rechecked the song/dance list for this week and it lists Simon as doing a Viennese waltz...so at what point did it change to an American Smooth? Was it related to his 'injury'? I don't watch ITT so don't know if it was covered?

disahsterdahling · 29/10/2017 10:02

I sent one vote Debbie's way though I think at this point you're probably safe enough at the top, but gave Susan and Jonnie a vote each.

It's a pity that Susan's dance was so themed, I think she would have done a really nice foxtrot if it had been a straight-forward dance.

I suspect it will be Davood or Mollie versus Simon in the dance-off with Simon to go.

GruesomeLadyOfMangling · 29/10/2017 10:46

You are correct mrsjamin but the scores are lower due to the judges starting out lower this series - the whole Shirley reboot thing - look, we're putting the strict back into strictly with the marking except if you're from Liverpool so I am not sure a comparison can be made as such because the scoring has been all over the place this year. What might have got sixes or sevens in previous series has got a five.
All that said, I'm not seeing 'journeys' as such this year. Joe has been like Nic goodfilmbadfilmCage, good dance, bad dance. Gemma is being pushed as developing but has had a similar trajectory: good Charleston, great paso then middling couple of weeks. Aston/Alex/Debs are consistent but no room for a journey there. Ruthie is learning the routines anew each week but doesn't seem to be improving her overall technique/applying what she has previously learnt (maybe that's impossible unless you learn them in a certain sequence, a dancer would need to tell me).
Halloween week is usually my favourite week but, pro dance aside (poor Rev missing that one) this year was decidedly meh...
I personally blame the music choices which were dire.
It's one thing squeezing routines to music to tie in with competitors' surnames week one (wake me up before you agogo, anyone?!) But squeezing in Halloween themes when there are at least a dozen tracks they have never used before gives me the rage.

Jonnie - no hip action (not solely down to prosthetic/Amy Purdy's cha cha in week one is fabulous). Pirate theme annoyed me, he could have done a POTC theme for movie week or pirates of Penzance in musical week.
Ruth - absolute ringer for Elizabeth Montgomery - sadly, compared with Jason and Kristina's QS, poor timing and technique
Simon - on a hiding to nothing. Music not great unless he had actually killed Karen at the end (!) and I really do wish we had seen Brian this week instead
Gemma - looked uncomfortable. Would have looked better in leather trousers and black top aka Buffy. The song was poor and she looked heavy/lacking in her kicks and flicks.
Joe - "oh no, what's this?" Me: What IS that? Rolling around on floor, fast turning without decent frame (maybe just me) and a bit where Katya grabbed him that, character driven or not, just looked ugly. Over marked.
Mollie - looked amazing. Could have done a catsuit and something to Love cats/Black cat with legs like that. I normally dislike her and AJ but thought they were great with a theme that actually was Halloween. So they then get 7s.
Alex - not sharp enough, need a techie on here to tell me about pointed toes/heel leads etc but not her best
Davood - just auto corrected to devoid. Like Greg's nonrumba it was fine as a nonrumba. Clutching to thin air is a metaphor for the waste of space that is his pro's choreo this year. I think she will be replaced in series 16.
Susan - uncanny resemblance to Vanessa Feltz in that wig. Awful theming/music mismatch. They should have binned it.
Debbie - Hated her costumes, both of them. Hated the lifts and end pose. They need to stop trying to make Frankenstein happen. It was bad when Past had to do it, Gio was only a marginal improvement. They could recycle a pier last week and lockers this week but they couldn't recycle Ed's dragon for Susan?
Aston - Have said it before, a paso works best with a Spanish theme and authentic music. I hate rock Pasos, I just think it's wasted choreo. Nirvana + Strictly, there's a reason why it's not been used before. A grunge paso was grudgingly best of a bad bunch but if you wanted non Spanish music I can think of better tunes.

I need to change my name to bah humbug, I just felt tricked rather than treated.

GruesomeLadyOfMangling · 29/10/2017 10:49

Pash not Past.

ppeatfruit · 29/10/2017 10:54

I haven't had the time to read all of the posts about yesterday's. OMG Debbeh needs to keep that wig she looked better and younger than she does with her blonde candy floss type hair!! That dance, bloody'ell!!!! Joe Varney was also incredible

Simon is injured, of course he needs to go, for a rest, he's sweet though.

Why would Shirley criticise poor Davood's lunges? As an OP said he just danced what he was given to dance FGS. She, of all people. should know that.

I reckon that he and Simon will be in the DO or maybe with Ruth, she also looks like she needs a rest!

RhiannonOHara · 29/10/2017 11:16

I've always known all the words to 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' Grin ; it was very formative for me.

I thought Aston's dance was too jerky and had too much hip-hop. His shaping wasn't as good as the judges said, IMO; could have had much better arms and a more exaggerated back.
Debbie was pretty good but those gusset lifts were MOST unflattering.
I liked Alexandra and Gorka. Saw her do one heel lead at least. Great atmosphere and style.
Joe was overmarked again. I just don't think he's that good. Liked Katya's dress and make-up.
Gemma was good, energetic, looked like a proper jive.
Mollie and AJ are utterly forgettable.
Davood got slammed for things that were Nadiya's fault; then again, they said that the few rumba steps he DID do, he didn't do well, so maybe she knew that and decided to go for emotion and style instead to get the public vote?
Ruth was quite good, I thought, and Craig was very mean to her. It wasn't the 'antithesis' of a quickstep. Hmm
Jonnie was unremarkable. I think his card might be marked.
Susan and Kevin were given a very tough brief: a dance that's meant to be 'serious' and classy with a trashy theme and terrible song. They did their best but it wasn't good. Hope they get saved by the vote and come back to do something better.
Simon is awful. He needs to go.

Liked Tess's dress, and Claudia's, although she did look a bit like a Gothic Christmas tree.

RhiannonOHara · 29/10/2017 11:19

PS Kevin looked like Jay Rayner. Shirley looked like she just wears that outfit on an average night out.

MegCleary · 29/10/2017 11:27

Kevin is too mouthy at the moment knows he’s got a lot of public support.

Auburn2001 · 29/10/2017 11:34

I will miss Susan if she goes. She always does something hilarious right at the end of the song. I preferred last week's dance for her though.
Debbie/Debbeh looked better in the wig and I didn't see the point of the gimmicky costume changes and gusset flashes.

ppeatfruit · 29/10/2017 11:34

Yes Tess and Claud both looked very good, Claud usually does. It's unusual for Tess to wear something so flattering. I wonder if she realised!

Auburn2001 · 29/10/2017 11:35

I love Claudia's sense of her own style. Yes she and Tess looked great.
