I'm sure there are many planning to watch this tonight but I can't see a thread, apologies if there is one.

Looks promising with good acting stock. I'm already worried about the implications for real life reporting and conviction rates if the female is lying. Got a feeling it won't be that black and white though.

I'm now thinking back to the pregnant girlfriend of the son who did a DIY abortion. Cannot think why that was in the middle of this drama?

Unless it's relevant in the last episode, then I'd guess it was just a really ham-fisted and ridiculously contrived and convenient way of showing how easily and convincingly Dr Ioan can lie.

I feel obliged to watch the last episode to see if I've been unfair and if in fact the increasingly incredulous aspects of this clumsy mess will be pulled together in an intelligent way, but I very much doubt it. Started out with such promise, descended into total and utter shite. Sad

randomer · 11/10/2017 13:23

Oh God line of duty. That's all. This and doc foster absolutely crap.

elfinpre · 11/10/2017 13:27

The programme is about lies. Lying about a criminal offence, lying about adultery, lying about pregnancy, lying about an abortion. Big lies, small lies, and white lies, actually for a good purpose.

I wouldn't say this is the best drama I've ever seen but I'm still watching.

MissEliza · 11/10/2017 13:35

Yes Elfin everyone (except the lovely Liam) has lied. Joanne Froggat's character was happy to lie to that girl's father about something really serious. Even the evil Dr (forgot his name) wasn't too happy about doing that.

Fluffybrain · 11/10/2017 13:36

How would the hymen be in tact if she'd been raped by Andrew? I didn't hear the doctor say in tact. I'm going to have to watch it again. I think it's a good drama. It's not a documentary so it can be ridiculous and still address real issues.

BeyondNoone

So you can have IVF, a c-section, and still technically be a virgin?

ConcreteUnderpants · 11/10/2017 14:58

Feral lol!

I'm still waiting for some to screech "Tom...Tom" 14 dozen times....wish I didn't so overly invested in shit tv.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 11/10/2017 15:59

"... everyone (except the lovely Liam) has lied."

Has Nice DI Vanessa's police partner colleague lied?

I'm counting on him to remain the only other uncomplicatedly decent, regular bloke.
He bailed out of a family party to come and be with her in her time of need and seems genuinely caring.
(plus referred to Andrew as "that little shit"...bonus point from me).

If they turn that on its head next episode, to hammer the point about 'respectable' and 'trustworthy' not always being the case, and he turns out to be involved (in sinister abuse-of-authority manner), I truly despair.

MissEliza · 11/10/2017 16:57

Ooh you're right Thalia he hasn't. I'd be gutted if there turns out be a liar too because I like the actor! ( Ok a bit put out not gutted!)

BeyondNoone · 11/10/2017 17:11

Very fair point fluffy, I was still thinking about it re what the bleeding was (before we knew there were abrasions).

Yes you can have ivf and c section and still be a ‘virgin’. But then virginity is a nonsense patriachal idea and not technically measurable anyway (as the hymen can rip at any time, not just from PIV sex).

BeyondNoone · 11/10/2017 17:13

So, shall we tally up who hasn’t lied yet? Might be easier than counting who has!

pinkingshears · 11/10/2017 17:57

'virginity' may be a patriarchal concept and I am aware that the hymen can be ripped by things other than PIV but that wasn't what I was asking.
I was specifically whether the instruments used in IVF woud 'break the hymen' in a similar way to PIV thus ending the accepted concept of 'virginity'. It must be 'technically measurable' though.

BeyondNoone · 11/10/2017 18:55

Sorry I thought I answered that upthread.Embryo transfer is done with a catheter, it is possible that it could be done without rupturing the hymen as they’re generally quite skinny.

My point was (I apologise, it does seem to have come out a bit rude) that as the concept of virginity isn’t quantifiable (and the hymen itself isn’t “all or nothing” either), the idea of whether someone is a virgin depends entirely on their own interpretation of what that means. Someone may interpret having had IVF as the loss of their virginity, someone else may have interpreted other forms of sex as it, someone else would only include PIV.

pinkingshears · 11/10/2017 19:11

No need to apologise. It is a really interesting (to me) but rather specific point I realise and I am glad to have someone to discuss it with :)

I've had embryo transfer myself but didnt see the catheter as I was looking at the screen etc. It felt biggish but I was prob a bit sensitive by then! I also had a c-section.

I always wondered if I had been a virgin (i wasnt) whether it would have counted as a Virgin Birth (I am not a complete weirdo, honest, but it is strange what goes through your mind when off your face on drugs).

BeyondNoone · 11/10/2017 19:18

There are different shapes and sizes depending on how exactly they are doing it (I don’t know enough about it to go into detail!), so it’s possible you did have one of the bigger ones.

I guess it would also depend on the kind of hymen the woman had (everybody, do not google if you have trypophobia!!) and how much space there was and ‘give’ to it before it tore

Oblomov17 · 11/10/2017 19:25

So only sisters bf Liam.
And male police cop.
Haven’t lied?

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 11/10/2017 19:31

Yet...

Clawdy · 11/10/2017 19:59

I thought Liam was the sister's husband, not boyfriend?

pinkingshears · 11/10/2017 20:07

Oh, v interesting. i'd assumed the Hymen was a kind of thin permeable thin latex type membrane ( a bit like a balloon) that stretched completely across so once it was torn then it was torn.

Every day is a school day. Thank you! :)

GColdtimer · 11/10/2017 21:27

Pinking, I have just been googling hymens!

pinkingshears · 11/10/2017 22:11

Sorry to de-rail rather.
Ahem, As you were Grin

ElizabethDarcey · 11/10/2017 22:11

I do think that the characters and/or the writers forgot that at that point when the police officer is screaming that he raped her, that is the first time Laura is hearing that information. Obviously the actress already knows that about the plot, but her character should have been shocked and confused.

I shat myself when she smashed the mirror, and again when he said 'Don't run'.

Inkanta · 11/10/2017 22:17

Some great acting!

RhiannonOHara · 12/10/2017 10:48

Fella. Awwww. I miss Adrian Dunbar LoD. Grin

LouiseBrooks · 12/10/2017 11:42

when he said 'Don't run'

He was bloody scary there!
