I'm sure there are many planning to watch this tonight but I can't see a thread, apologies if there is one.

Looks promising with good acting stock. I'm already worried about the implications for real life reporting and conviction rates if the female is lying. Got a feeling it won't be that black and white though.

OP posts:
woodhill · 27/09/2017 15:46

Hopefully I won't ever encounter one.

Papafran · 27/09/2017 16:44

Hopefully I won't ever encounter one

You will have done, trust me. Rape is terrifyingly common and rapists are very often friendly, charming, respectable. It will be someone's husband, boyfriend, son, brother, father. But you have definitely encountered a rapist before, even if you have not been the victim of one and even if that person has never been arrested or charged with rape. 85% of rapes go unreported, remember. If you keep thinking of rapists as freaks and outcasts hiding in bushes, desperate for sex, things will never change for the better.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 27/09/2017 16:45

Quite like this, parodying sensible-but-usually-putting-the-onus-on-those-potentially-at-risk-rather-than-onto-the-perpetrators-themselves advice we're constantly bombarded with:

Ten Rape Prevention Tips:

1. Don’t put drugs in women’s drinks.

2. When you see a woman walking by herself, leave her alone.

3. If you pull over to help a woman whose car has broken down, remember not to rape her.

4. If you are in an elevator and a woman gets in, don’t rape her.

5. When you encounter a woman who is asleep, the safest course of action is to not rape her.

6. Never creep into a woman’s home through an unlocked door or window, or spring out at her from between parked cars, or rape her.

7. Remember, people go to the laundry room to do their laundry. Do not attempt to molest someone who is alone in a laundry room.

8. Use the Buddy System! If it is inconvenient for you to stop yourself from raping women, ask a trusted friend to accompany you at all times.

9. Carry a rape whistle. If you find that you are about to rape someone, blow the whistle until someone comes to stop you.

10. Don’t forget: Honesty is the best policy. When asking a woman out on a date, don’t pretend that you are interested in her as a person; tell her straight up that you expect to be raping her later. If you don’t communicate your intentions, the woman may take it as a sign that you do not plan to rape her.

Note:
-It's most definitely not "anti-male"; it's anti- rapist. They two terms are not interchangeable.
-It most definitely does not, as has apparently been levelled at it from certain quarters, "accuse all males of thinking this way".
-It most definitely does not fail to acknowledge males are also raped...this just happened to be focusing on females.

It's humour to make a very real, very serious point. Thus, crucially, reaching a far wider audience.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 27/09/2017 16:52

Anyway, sorry, OP, back to the thread:

Anyone else think the aerial shots of Laura kayaking through the saltmarshes are amazing?

woodhill · 27/09/2017 17:09

Yes probably papa. I've been in relationships with the odd boyfriend who could be described as one of those men.

I know they will not all be the stereotypes you describe or see on crime watch.

troodiedoo · 27/09/2017 18:31

In my OP I said had concerns about real life implications if she was lying. I was very naive to not consider the amount of victim blaming if she was telling the truth.

OP posts:
Elendon · 27/09/2017 19:48

Thalia I think those shots are amazing. I would love to get into a kayak and scream at the top of my voice right now. Well not right now as it's night.

Graphista · 27/09/2017 19:55

Yes you will have come into contact with rapists and child molestors.

I was once in a job and we were digitalising then archiving/destroying old documents including complaints against ex-employees. Now a very SMALL percentage of complaints will have possibly been misunderstandings but there were a shocking number of sexual harassment/assault reports and even 2 quite harrowing rapes reported.

DrCoconut · 27/09/2017 20:14

I remember a new student enrolling on a course I taught. At the time I was a bit perturbed by myself because with no obvious cause he made my skin crawl. I really try not to judge on first impressions and he was not obviously a weirdo. But I must have picked up on something because I made sure I wasn't left alone with him. Toward the end of year one he was sent to prison for a violent rape. Horrible.

waterlego6064 · 27/09/2017 20:27

This discussion made me reflect on Bill Cosby, and the allegations against him (call me unfair, but I absolutely assume they are all true as the evidence is pretty overwhelming). There is an example of a man who was successful, powerful, presumably wealthy, and not exactly a gargoyle (I mean, he wouldn't have been my cup of tea but I can't imagine he was short of admirers).

Why would Bill Cosby NEED to drug and rape numerous women in order to have satisfactory sex?

He wouldn't, of course.

He (allegedly) drugged and raped women because rape is an act of violence, and some men enjoy violence.

waterlego6064 · 27/09/2017 20:29

'Some men enjoy violence' sounds horribly flippant. Hopefuully my meaning was clear though.

Some men hate women and want to hurt them, and rape is an 'ideal' way to do that. (Especially as conviction rates are low).

Peachypie83 · 27/09/2017 21:47

Does anyone else think that the sister looks just like Mother Of Daughters on Instagram?

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 28/09/2017 00:19

Peachy,

Can't see too much similarity myself...sorry!

But do love Clemmie Hooper. She's great.

LadyKyliePonsonbyFarquhar · 28/09/2017 09:39

I don’t understand why he let her take the glass without the drug in it. Surely, if he had put forward the other one she would have automatically taken it and he wouldn’t have had to swap them later.

troodiedoo · 28/09/2017 12:17

I caught up with this week's episode last night. Hurrah for the female detective. Are those leaflets an actual thing?

OP posts:
Openup41 · 28/09/2017 12:28

Ladykylie - he suggested a particular glass and she took the other one. He could not make a fuss otherwise it would have looked suspicious.

UnFuckingAcceptable · 28/09/2017 14:12

Bloody hell.
I came on here to have a bit of a read about a fictional TV show.
Silly, silly me.

I should've known that any TV show discussing rape would bring all the bullshit out if people.

Fit blokes don't rape.
Successful men don't need to rape.
Women who are a bit dodgy acting must be lying.
Drunk women can't be relied upon to know whether or not they've been raped.
Anyone inviting a man into their home on a first date is gagging for it and therefore cannot be raped.

Get to fuck. What disgusting views!!!
I'm out of this thread.

BeyondNoone · 28/09/2017 15:27

Please don’t go, un. The more reasonable posters who leave, the larger a majority the Neanderthals make up :(

GColdtimer · 28/09/2017 16:12

Exactly beyond. There are lots of us challenging those views.

Elendon · 28/09/2017 16:51

Great post Un. don't go

Can I discuss the settings? I would love to have a house so close to the sea, but every time I look at it, I'm thinking global warming and sea level rises! I would be forever worrying and loving it in equal measures.

I also like Laura's ex and her sister. They are not doing great things but both seem like good people. So conflicted on that.

supersop60 · 28/09/2017 17:07

For me, the most annoying thing is that only we (and Laura) know that he spiked her drink, through the magic of flashback. All trace of the drug had gone from her system when she was tested, so there is no proof. I am gripped by this story.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 28/09/2017 17:21

UnFuckingAcceptable,

No, don't abandon the thread. Please. Stay around and join the discussion...the best way to challenge views you (and many others here, including myself) disagree with and find upsetting.

I'm reminding myself not everybody has had prior reason, or traumatic personal experience, or have maybe been heavily influenced by prevailing attitudes held by certain sections of the media, to consider the full implications surrounding rape/ SA/ consent/ blame/ myths, and that's surely precisely what Liar is exploring on-screen.

Is definitely leading to RL debate and better awareness off-screen.
People's attitudes can change for the better, and often do when facts are pointed out...but that's unlikely to happen if they're instantly shut down for (initially) expressing opinions.

Point blank refusal even to acknowledge victim-blaming happens/ denying the reasons why, is different (and I'm zero tolerance for that, like you).

Apologies for essay, all. Blush

Elendon,

Kayaking through all that emptiness would feel pretty amazing, I agree! We could paddle out together, then separate in opposite directions to offload stress via primal screaming either end of the marshes...

Graphista · 28/09/2017 18:41

Another begging un to stay.

As I said up thread the mythology around sexual violence MUST be challenged EVERY time.

Elendon · 28/09/2017 19:37

Laura is going by her instincts and what happened to her regarding the spiking of the drinks. If she knew there and then the drinks were spiked she would have shown him the door, is my belief.

As viewers we think he did spike the drinks.

Elendon · 28/09/2017 19:39

Oh and ThaliaLuxurySpa sounds lovely. My scream would perhaps be silent and loud in equal measures.
