I can confirm I have forgotten an awful lot. Didn't recognise Dragonstone until we saw the table.

I'm quite a crap GoT fan!

honeyroar · 17/07/2017 23:46

I loved it. Apart from the Ed Sheeran scene - can't believe a series that has been so wonderfully produced with great actors would lower itself to that level.

If he comes back with tyrion's head I will be distraught. Surely he'd never get past the Dothraki, the unsullied and the dragons?? (You've all worried me now!).

My husband thought that Dragonstone was far from King's Landing and Cersei wouldn't have had time to get anyone there yet. It looked pretty well kept to say it had been empty for a few years though.

And why was Jorah where Sam was? Do I remember correctly that Dany sent him off to find a cure? Perhaps he thought he'd find one through the books? It didn't look to be working for him though. His hand looked awful.

Did anyone like the ES scene?

Dragonstone isn't far from KL at all... (I found a map to double check)

(Bear in mind that it's usually occupied by family of the monarch)

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 17/07/2017 23:59

Yes I want to know why Jorah was there too?

reallyneedmoresleep · 18/07/2017 00:02

I quite liked the Ed Sheeran scene

OlennasWimple · 18/07/2017 00:08

Jorah was at the Citadel looking for a cure for greyscale because that's where the greatest concentration of maesters is - and those cells imply that they have proper facilities for managing contagious cases like greyscale

Regarding Jon Snow and women fighting...

Have you forgotten who gave Arya her sword, Needle?

AryaUnderfoot · 18/07/2017 06:24

The trailer showed Greyjoy 1 fleet (Theon/Yara) under attack - presumably from Greyjoy 2 fleet (Euron). I'm assuming Euron's gift is someone from Greyjoy 1. My guess is Yara and a few Sands (hopefully all of them).

Episode description for 2 (or maybe 3) says Cersei returns a gift. I think she's going to return that Dornish necklace.

I don't think Sansa will return to Cersei. I think she'll stay as far from KL as she can possibly get. She's still wanted for regicide.

Haven't watched yet. Just marking place. I was knackered last night and went to bed without watching Love Island or GoT! Blush

Middleoftheroad · 18/07/2017 08:02

Spoiler alert....well a line of script

Hated the ES scene.
Should have kept him singing the song, but not had him speak, or be that in focus.
It's because it ruined the illusion for me. Watching, you're able to suspend disbelief, this is a real world, the white walkers are a real threat, there's magic and dragons, then BAM. Ed Sheeran, dragging you to the realisation you're watching a pop star in fancy dress.

The song they were singing, wasn't that the Tyrions song, after he killled Shae?

Also, whoever mentioned Gendry, he wasn't there, was he? I think you're thinking of Podrick?

I'll (obviously) keep watching, but, does anyone else think the dialogue is getting shittier every season. Think it's started to struggle since they went 'off book' but can't put my finger on exactly what I think is the issue.

Other than that, it was a quite good opener, did a good kid of setting the scene, laying out everyone's position etc

Loved the one eyed giant, love everything about Bran, (his were always my fav book chapters).

I also saw the white walkers in london yesterday, set me up perfectly Grin

HaveToBeSure · 18/07/2017 08:22

Thought Pete Postlethwaite's son was Kylo Ren - eh??

WeDoNotSow · 18/07/2017 08:24

TooExtra Yea, the 'are you old enough to drink' had me going Hmm too!

ElspethFlashman · 18/07/2017 08:27

I think the thing about the dialogue is that it was pure Exposition throughout.

Every word Jaime and Verse spoke was basically a "Previously On...."

So it was a bit clunky and obvious. I'm hoping it gains more finesse next week now that everyone is up to speed.

AryaUnderfoot · 18/07/2017 08:29

WeDoNotSow the song was the one that Symon Silver Tongue sang to Tyrion. He was Shae's singer and knew Tyrion was keeping her in the manse in King's Landing.

He ended up in a bowl of brown - which is where whoever wrote that scene deserves to end up Wink. It had all the writing quality of a GCSE drama student's coursework.

They are trying to flip-flop between Arya the Sonehart psycho killer and Arya the compassionate human being. The scene sucked.

AryaUnderfoot · 18/07/2017 08:35

does anyone else think the dialogue is getting shittier every season

In a word, yes.

HaveToBeSure · 18/07/2017 08:37

I enjoyed it, had some very good bits but I also had some bugbears:

The whole Arya and the soldiers scene was badly scripted and acted - and I'm another who thought Ed Sheeran was cringey af!

I too was 'come on!!' at Ed Sheehan asking Arya if she was old enough to drink. Seriously? In Westeros? I suspect they meant it to be either said in a really teasing tone to indicate that they thought she was a little girl or to remind us how young her character is meant to be i.e. "'Ere, are you even old enough to drink?' but due to bad acting it came across like the producer she were like 'well we can show multiple gory deaths, rapes, boobies galore but we absolutely MUST make it clear that we don't condone underage drinking!'

Considering the Hound is mortally afraid of fire to the point of it being a serious character defining issue he seemed to get over it well enough for the very contrived fire gazing bit.

That being said, and over all dodgy dialogue aside, I liked it and found myself really loving Sansa for the first time ever! Jim Broadbent fit in effortlessly and I loved the (slightly fan servicey) bit between Tormund and Brienne when she's thrown Pod ("You're a lucky man!")

TitilatedOcelot · 18/07/2017 08:38

*... you're able to suspend disbelief ... then BAM Ed Sheehan, dragging you to the realisation you're watching a pop star in fancy dress
*
That's it! The scene really did have a comic relief spoof feel about it - it seemed that Arya Stark had stumbled through some magical forest portal to a reenactment or tv drama in our world. Will pretend that bit didn't happen, as the rest was great.

I thought the dialogue suffered last season with no book to follow, especially Tyrion's wit. Didn't notice it so much this episode, though.

Dragonglass on dragonstone - looking forward to the Targaryen family reunion when Jon goes to get it!

TitilatedOcelot · 18/07/2017 08:44

For actual comic relief though, I'd love to see that ES scene with Arya redone in a Galaxy Quest / Tropic Thunder type way where she is real AS and they are a bunch of actors pretending to be Westerosi.

MrsGWay · 18/07/2017 09:18

I didn't know that soldier was Ed Sheeran. Just thought he looked familiar so was trying to remember where I'd seen him in GoT.

I thought the scene was OK, telling us something about Arya's character. So I'm wondering if the scene would've worked for everyone if it hadn't had Ed in.

I enjoyed the episode, probably because it had such a satisfying opening.

AryaUnderfoot · 18/07/2017 09:50

It seems to me that Cersei Lannister to B&W is a bit like that half-used jar of horseradish sauce that's been in the fridge since 2011. You know that it's way past its used-by date and just taking up valuable space, but you never quite get round to throwing it away.

GuinefortGrey · 18/07/2017 10:12

Why did some of the scenes seem a bit wooden, flat and clunky? Is it the writing, or was the sound a bit off? I found it very off putting and where in previous series GOT has had incredibly high production values, some bits in this episode seemed a bit "cheap". Maybe they spent all their money on Ed Sheeran's appearance fee Confused

I still loved it though. Did anyone else have that feeling of meeting old friends again when each character re-appeared? I adore Brienne, I wish I was her!

reuset · 18/07/2017 10:15

I don't know what Ed Sheersn looks like (I know there's a pop singer with that name but nothing more) so I didn't notice much amiss.

Was struggling to work out where Jorah appeared as I don't remember seeing him. It was the arm only we saw then?
