I've never been quite about whether dinosaur-deniers are a joke or not - it's that outrageously stupid Grin

But they are essentially young earth creationists who call the existence of dinosaurs a hoax - say the bones and findings were a hoax by the Victorians - because obvs dinos existing 200 million years ago messes with their idea that the earth is only 4000 years old. Or something. And there are no dinosaurs in the bible. Prevalent in the USA, not the UK.

But hey, the flat-earthers are also making a comeback Confused

AssignedMentalAtBirth · 19/06/2017 00:09

Yes well that why most of them are climate deniers too. Scientifically illiterate. Or theist- icly (?) ignorant

ConfusedConfusedConfused

I don't believe there are people so strange. Where do they think dinosaur bones came from, a conspiracy?

AssignedMentalAtBirth · 19/06/2017 00:23

'Fraid so. and Pence is in line for Leader of the Free World, after the Orange One tweets himself into prison

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 19/06/2017 00:27

Aaarrrrgghhh get passport USA ladies. Now

noblegiraffe · 19/06/2017 00:39

Dinosaurs are in the Old Testament, supposedly. Leviathan is one. I don't think they think fossils are as old as they are supposed to be and that carbon-dating is inaccurate.

I used to live with a young-earth creationist. She was exceptionally intelligent. Apart from this.

Orlantina · 19/06/2017 04:42

Ever heard of Accelerated Christian Education?

They have schools in the UK as well as on the USA.

I think Offred found out in episode to that Moira (is that her name?) had been caught and killed. When they beat the man to death.

GavelRavel · 19/06/2017 07:26

Creationism is still prevalent in the UK as well, incredibly. The DUP in NI who May is about to jump into bed with and give disproportionate power over how we are governed, tried to have it added to the national curriculum in NI and evolution removed. My aunt also believes in creationism, apparently the bones were buried by God to give archeologists something to do.

CruCru · 19/06/2017 07:35

This was an interesting episode. I liked the bit at the end when she got the commander to make his wife let her out of her room - he thought he was being kind but he just didn't want another Handmaid to kill herself. Presumably it looks bad, even for a commander, to not be able to keep the handmaids from killing themselves.

PacificDogwod · 19/06/2017 08:05

Imagine if the dr had impregnated her and then The Ceremony failed.
She cannot win.

The whole thing is so twisted while making sense in a horrible way also.

Really enjoying (if that's the word) reading Alias Grace just now btw. Smile

Charley50 · 19/06/2017 08:10

Two. Duh.

Charley50 · 19/06/2017 08:17

I wonder why the commander doesn't play scrabble with his wife?
Maybe because he doesn't trust her not to tell the authorities?

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 19/06/2017 08:28

No, Moira escaped. When the Commander was telling Serena that a woman had escaped from the Red Centre, got across the border & was talking to the media, that was her.

When Serena commented that she didn't expect that of an Aunt, it was interesting that the Commander didn't correct her.

Upsideout · 19/06/2017 08:52

Pacific I hadn't thought of that, that could've been awful.

InigoTaran · 19/06/2017 09:15

Just watching now. Do pp think that doctor who offered impregnate her was genuine, or just looking to get his end away??

angelacharlie · 19/06/2017 09:18

I thought the scrabble, alcohol and reading material was a type of grooming, for what he wanted to do next.

I remember one of the arguments against theory of evolution was that we've found nothing in the in between stages of evolution, in fossil evidence etc

Jayfee · 19/06/2017 09:31

1984, brave new world and the handmaids tale now feel more like predictions, at least partially, rather than dystopian fantasy. which authors are the atwood, huxley and orwell of today and what are their fantasies / fears for the future?? I dont like science fiction but books like the handmaid's tale based on the human experience. any suggestions?

InigoTaran · 19/06/2017 09:36

The Power by Naomi Alderman is a recent one. It's an excellent book.

theredjellybean · 19/06/2017 09:53

emperess...i dont think that is moira they are talking about..unless they change a fundamental part of the book as Moira appears later and she is most certainly not in toronto.

But it is a good idea and i would not mind if that is how they tie up the Moira storyline.

I was also wondering what happened to handmaids once they went through menopause ? i guess became martha's as there would not be an endless supply of them...once the first wave of older women had died off , the regime had either shipped of to colonies all the younger infertile ones, the fertile young ones were handmaids and the rest econowifes or aunts...there would be a market for marthas.

I am not sure ..i am 50 so no longer fertile, am on second marriage ( which started as an affair) but DP is very high up in a very influential financial institution...may get away with being a wife, if he became intrenched in the regime...but think we would have debunked by that time...hopefully his employer not being UK based would pull us out of uk....

My feelings on Serena Joy are mostly sympathetic, her desire for a child started before the regime ..she doesnt just want a child to shore up her position, i think she genuinely wants a child / family.
She must feel threatened by Offred, and as we find out later the commander has 'form' so to speak. Plus as is also revealed, and we got a glimpse last night she is highly intelligent and was in some ways an fundamental in the orchestering of this new regime.
To be told ' the men will deal with it' ...well the actress portrayed all that pent up fury/frustration etc brilliantly.

I actually was a bit 'meugh' about last nights ending, loved Offred's manipulation of the commander, and her smugness at effectively 'getting on over on them' and her realisation she does have some power to effect her life, but found th eclosing scene with the handmaids all walking forward and the voice over 'we are handmaids' reminded me of the m+s adverts...expected ' we are the girls' to start playing.

noblegiraffe · 19/06/2017 10:10

Not new, but old, John Wyndham's The Kraken Wakes has aliens melting the polar ice-caps and humanity having to deal with the subsequent rise in sea levels, refugees flocking inland to higher ground, London being abandoned and so on. I often think about it when they talk about the effects of climate change.
Children of Men by PD James looks at what happens to society if everyone is unable to have children. Very bleak.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 19/06/2017 10:26

You're right, Red, sorry. Moira's escape would have been a while ago.

I'm rereading the book for the first time in about 20 years but not that far in yet.
