emperess...i dont think that is moira they are talking about..unless they change a fundamental part of the book as Moira appears later and she is most certainly not in toronto.
But it is a good idea and i would not mind if that is how they tie up the Moira storyline.
I was also wondering what happened to handmaids once they went through menopause ? i guess became martha's as there would not be an endless supply of them...once the first wave of older women had died off , the regime had either shipped of to colonies all the younger infertile ones, the fertile young ones were handmaids and the rest econowifes or aunts...there would be a market for marthas.
I am not sure ..i am 50 so no longer fertile, am on second marriage ( which started as an affair) but DP is very high up in a very influential financial institution...may get away with being a wife, if he became intrenched in the regime...but think we would have debunked by that time...hopefully his employer not being UK based would pull us out of uk....
My feelings on Serena Joy are mostly sympathetic, her desire for a child started before the regime ..she doesnt just want a child to shore up her position, i think she genuinely wants a child / family.
She must feel threatened by Offred, and as we find out later the commander has 'form' so to speak. Plus as is also revealed, and we got a glimpse last night she is highly intelligent and was in some ways an fundamental in the orchestering of this new regime.
To be told ' the men will deal with it' ...well the actress portrayed all that pent up fury/frustration etc brilliantly.
I actually was a bit 'meugh' about last nights ending, loved Offred's manipulation of the commander, and her smugness at effectively 'getting on over on them' and her realisation she does have some power to effect her life, but found th eclosing scene with the handmaids all walking forward and the voice over 'we are handmaids' reminded me of the m+s adverts...expected ' we are the girls' to start playing.
