Anyone else planning on watching this at 9pm on channel 4?

OP posts:

Why watch such absolute rubbish? Nothing about it is edifying or enriching. Yes, mankind is capable of degradation. The world is full of beauty. Bleeuurgggg...

SomethingOnce · 11/06/2017 22:23

Excellent use of Blondie's Heart of Glass with the café window being blown in.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/06/2017 22:24

Orlantina · 11/06/2017 22:26

Did you see how easy it was to lose control of money?

SomethingOnce · 11/06/2017 22:26

Ok, Chatelaine, just pop your fingers in your ears and sing 'La, la, can't hear you'. Nobody's going to make you watch it.

TheSpottedZebra · 11/06/2017 22:26

How do they Aunts become Aunts?
Seemingly, they're the only women allowed to work outside the home.

And the subtext Is that Aunt Lydia is gay, right?

TheOriginalChatelaine · 11/06/2017 22:26

Sleep well!

Orlantina · 11/06/2017 22:27

If people have read the book, is there any reaction from countries outside the US? Or is that a spoiler?

BuzzKillington · 11/06/2017 22:29

Chatelaine okaaaaay Confused

Letsgohome · 11/06/2017 22:32

Yes DUP and police brutality in America very real themes tonight, bloody hard to watch. I was on the fence about whether to record the series and read the book first but following on from this thread I'll just watch it, however can anyone recommend any other books? What are Margaret Atwood's other books like?

SuperFlyHigh · 11/06/2017 22:33

TheSpotted I think aunts are the older women with intelligence but non rebellious and of non childbearing ages, maybe teachers... Or headmistress. With a strong moral code and evil streaks - almost like some of the Nazi women. I think they were just encouraged to join up or were asked due to their unshakeable personalities, you can't have one rebel like Offred's mother. And she got sent to the island where they'd die, I forget the name.

Not sure if aunt Lydia is gay though... Hmm

PacificDogwod · 11/06/2017 22:34

It is so well done.

I like the fleshing out of 'before', hard as it is to watch.
And why on earth did Ofglen's lover had to be hung so cruelly??
Sad

SuperFlyHigh · 11/06/2017 22:34

Lets I've read a book of short stories Atwood had out last year and Alias Grace which is a story based on a real life Victorian Canadian murdress, both very good.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 11/06/2017 22:34

I'll answer, though I will point out the TVers keep bashing the 'bookers' for discussing the book. In the main narrative Gilead is a closed state & there is no suggestion of contact with the outside world, save for one scene.

SuperFlyHigh · 11/06/2017 22:36

Pacific because she was the lover of Ofglen (her superior) and so Ofglen saw.

Orlantina · 11/06/2017 22:36

And why on earth did Ofglen's lover had to be hung so cruelly

That's what happens in Iran. Death by crane.

PacificDogwod · 11/06/2017 22:37

I know, I meant the mode of her punishment (where do we stand on spoilers?? Confused)

PacificDogwod · 11/06/2017 22:38

Really, Orlantina??

That is beyond cruel and inhuman and so fucking disturbingly creative!

Angry
SuperFlyHigh · 11/06/2017 22:38

Also Pacific Offred was told Ofglen hung herself as she saw the van with the eyes coming for her - in the book!

Ktown · 11/06/2017 22:38

Places like Saudi and Afghanistan treat women not much better than this though.
It isn't really a future dystopia, more an alternative of what is currently occurring elsewhere.

SomethingOnce · 11/06/2017 22:38

Cannot wait to reread the book. Not going to mix and match though!

I read it half my lifetime ago - the different perspective will be interesting.

Could we plan a post-series book club thread?

SuperFlyHigh · 11/06/2017 22:39

Orlantina I knew that happened in Iran - the daily fail reported it years ago!

PacificDogwod · 11/06/2017 22:39

Oh yes, please, I am going to read the book again once the TV series is finished Smile
