Me for one!

I have to say I don't like the new series, and I have watched 4 episodes. I used to love the first one, but I was younger then and maybe had more patience. I just find myself wanting to fast forward through loads of it. I also find it really sexist too - lots of gratuitous nudity and attractive young girls getting beaten up whilst wearing their underwear. Maybe I'm just being a cheerless old git, but I don't think I'm going to keep watching it.

LottieandMia · 29/05/2017 08:48

I've watched the first four episodes but can't see when episode 5 is on?

OP posts:
ZedWoman · 29/05/2017 08:48

SarfEast1cated exactly the same here. Watched 3.4 episodes and gave up midway through the fourth.

It's just too damn slow. The dialogue is non-existent and the character development is dreadful. How much screen time was dedicated to watching Mr/Dr Jackoby spray-painting those shovels?

I don't have any faith that it will not end like Lost/The Prisoner/Twin Peaks the original in some major anti-climax.

LucyLocketLostIt · 29/05/2017 09:30

Can I join you? I was obsessed with the original series.

I really enjoyed the first three episodes but thought it lost its way a bit in the fourth one.

Hoping it's going to pick up again with the fifth.

I didn't recognise Ronette Pulaski so thanks for pointing that out.

LucyLocketLostIt · 29/05/2017 09:33

Ps @LottieandMia, I think I read somewhere that the actress who plays Josie wasn't on the cast list so don't think it was her on the sofa.

ClopySow · 29/05/2017 11:37

Watched 1 & 2 last night and just watched 3 and 4. What is going on?

LottieandMia · 29/05/2017 13:11

The thing I don't get is who is the other agent Cooper - the one called Dougie who isn't possessed by Bob? Dougie is apparently a different person in his own right but it would appear he's got to kill the version possessed by Bob.

Sonny Jim - anyone else think he's going to have an important role?

Just watched episode 3, very strange but I can't seem to stop watching. I may have to revisit the first 2 series though to refresh. DH who was trying to sort out some paperwork kept looking up at it and then said, what the hell is this shit, but he also said the same about The Handmaids tale

LucyLocketLostIt · 29/05/2017 21:26

Just been googling. This theory sort of makes sense:

Evil Cooper manufactured the third doppelgänger, Dougie, so that he could be sent to the Black Lodge in his place when Good Cooper returns.

This then sets up the story arc with both good and evil Coopers existing within the same realm, probably heading toward an epic showdown back in Twin Peaks, the place where it all began...

LottieandMia · 29/05/2017 23:13

So where is good Cooper right now? I assume he's in the place of Dougie? He replaced Dougie - is that right? So Dougie no longer exists?

Can i join?

Dh and i re watched series 1 and 2 just recently. Massive Lynch fans.

Started episode 1 of series 3 all wtf is going on, but got into it later on.

It's Peak Lynch! Completely bonkers, and reminds me a lot of Mullholland Drive and Lost Highway. You can tell he's really enjoying this.

Love seeing all the old characters, especially Lynch as Gordon Cole, and AC of course, and Hawk.

Things to remember with Lynch:

  1. It's not supposed to make sense.
  2. Don't watch it for the plot.
  3. A lot of this is Lynch experimenting with form, style, image etc.

Twin Peaks appears slow because contemporary tv is very fast, and scenes last a few seconds whereas if you re-watch anything from the 1990s, say, scenes are much longer. The Sopranos seems very slow, for example.

Anyway. I have no theories to contribute, but look forward to hearing what everyone else makes it it!

LottieandMia · 30/05/2017 08:24

Good points there!

LucyLocketLostIt · 30/05/2017 08:29

Yes, @LottieandMia, Dougie and good Cooper have switched.

Dougie is now in the the Black Lodge.

Good Cooper couldn't leave without being replaced by a doppelgänger.

LottieandMia · 30/05/2017 08:33

Ah, I see. I don't think we've seen Dougie in the black lodge yet have we? There was a lot of talk of doppelgängers in the first two seasons iirc.

Where are you up to @LottieandMia?

It sounds like you might be one behind. I've watched the first four episodes on Now TV.

LucyLocketLostIt · 30/05/2017 09:39

Welcome @WeSailTonightForSingapore.

You make some great points.

I agree about the pace. I really like the long, drawn out scenes. You have to absorb yourself in them.

Someone mentioned the shovel spraying scene earlier as being too drawn out but I actually enjoyed that one. Thought it was good comedic effect when the shovels rotated and it became clear the scene was going to be even longer!

LottieandMia · 30/05/2017 09:46

I watched the first four last week ...maybe I need to watch them again Grin

OP posts:
LucyLocketLostIt · 30/05/2017 09:49

Ah ok. Dougie is definitely in the Black Lodge. There was a scene with him and Mike, the one-armed man. Mike was telling him he'd been manufactured for some purpose.

LottieandMia · 30/05/2017 09:54

Oh yes, I remember now!

OP posts:
LucyLocketLostIt · 30/05/2017 10:01

Just wanted to mention Michael Cera's character Wally as well. Thought this scene was brilliant. Great Marlon Brando impression and reference to The Godfather. Very uncomfortable and funny at the same time.

LottieandMia · 30/05/2017 10:05

I agree Lucy! I liked Matthew Lillard's casting as well.

OP posts:
WeSailTonightForSingapore · 30/05/2017 10:15

Oh yes, the Wally Brando scene was gold! Didn't realise that was Michael Cera.

Lucy I thought the shovel sparying scene was great for that reason too.

I think his work is very self-referential; I find Twin Peaks Season 3 makes a lot more sense if I think back to Mullholland Drive for instance. In that film, people are also becoming other people, and have weird dream sequences.

Then there are the same devices he uses over and over again - singers and bands on stage, weird flooring, the colour red, or references to red, creepy characters like the sofa lady - they appear in virtually all of his works.

Then when you look at his work as a whole, 'plots' make more sense. And they make more sense insitnctively but if you try to explain them, it sounds crackers.

Unrelatedly, when I living in Paris I went to check out a room for rent. It was rented out by a couple who had...red curtains...all...around their appartment! Literally. Red curtains on every. single. wall. Couldn't figure out if they were Lynch fans or just odd. Needless to say, I did not rent that room!

LucyLocketLostIt · 30/05/2017 15:21

I had to google Matthew Lillard. He was the accused murderer?

I thought he looked familiar at the time but couldn't place him. He was in Scream.

I agree he played it very well!

LucyLocketLostIt · 30/05/2017 15:24

@WeSailTonightForSingapore I'm tempted to watch Mulholland Drive again now.

I have seen it once before but a long time ago.

Think I might have to start working my way through Lynch's back catalogue!

LottieandMia · 31/05/2017 07:53

Blue Velvet is my favourite Lynch film.
