Anyone else watch it?

Can't decide if I liked it or not. Very violent. The one female God gets the naked sex scene.

I love Ian McShane though and will keep watching for him.

No spoilers but you aren't wrong ella
Also, Wednesday went to a lot of trouble to recruit Shadow rather than some random bloke so give that some thought

EllaHen · 20/05/2017 10:35

Yeah, Loki being in jail with Shadow will be relevant I'm sure. There's just so much to remember.

I do love it. Long, slow scenes, the colours, the dialogue, the mix of new and old ideas.

I just look away when it's extremely violent.

The sex scenes are, erm, interesting.

The episodes are long and I commented so to dh. He said, 'yeah, like the jinn's penis.' 😁

I think this will be another series that I spend most of it watching thinking "What the Actual Fuck is going on?" Clearly I'm not very bright.

LilaBard · 20/05/2017 14:10

I love Neil Gaiman but found the book really really hard to get into. Kept starting it and then putting it aside and then restarting. Running joke in my house was it was my own personal War and Peace.
Finally read it all last year, didn't hate it but didn't love it like I do all his other stuff. Only watched ep 1 of the show so far and getting very similar vibes, so I guess that means they're doing it right? Casting seems v b good though.

EllaHen · 23/05/2017 17:06

Well, episode 4 was a bit of a damp squib.

I disagree. Contemplative back story. Worth telling. We don't need it all action action action.

Cooroo · 23/05/2017 22:04

DP and I are loving it, haven't read the book though. I've read other Neil Gaiman and loved them.

I thought the bathroom scene was one of the funniest things I've seen.

EllaHen · 29/05/2017 22:13

Back on form tonight. Really enjoyed tonight's episode. The plot is coming along nicely.

And Gillian Anderson was fecking brilliant.

I've not read the book but really loving this -including the impressive schlong

Thumbs up for me Grin

dillite · 03/06/2017 23:19

I still haven't a fucking clue as to what is going on. What the hell was that tree creature?

Haven't seen episode 4 yet but despite it being a bit slow-moving I'm loving it - Ian McShane and Shadow are perfect casting. It's rather Twin Peaks in feel - looks beautiful, not going to explain it all, and there's going to be bits where you won't have a clue but they'll look amazing.
I read the book when it first came out so I've forgotten most of the details, but I remember kicking myself when Wednesday revealed who he was!

Pixel · 10/06/2017 00:24

I'd probably have enjoyed this more if I hadn't read the book and enjoyed it so much. It started well, although for some inexplicable reason Shadow is now a black man, but it soon veered off on it's own path which bears only a passing resemblance to the original. Lots of completely made-up stuff like Laura losing her arm etc. I'm getting increasingly annoyed to be honest, especially with the constant swearing which was definitely not a feature of the book!

EllaHen · 12/06/2017 22:56

Well, I loved tonight's episode. Was only going to watch half as I'm knackered but became totally engrossed and watched the whole thing.

OP posts:
EllaHen · 12/06/2017 22:59

Pixel, I had no idea Shadow wasn't black in the books.

I can live with the swearing but it doesn't really add anything.

The arm thing is growing on me. Probably a plot device so we know tense. However, it's quite funny.

peukpokicuzo · 14/06/2017 23:37

I'm still really enjoying it. I like the pace where some episodes are all flashback or standalone "coming-to-America" stories.

TheHiphopopotamus · 19/06/2017 13:19

I've watched all the episodes now (I think).

Thoughts are: bit of slow start but I really got into it towards the end (especially ep 7 & 8).
Laura is a much more compelling character than Shadow.
Liked the bits that interspersed the main story telling stories of the 'old' gods.
Love the main title sequence.

Is there definitely going to be another series?

EllaHen · 19/06/2017 16:35

Yes, definitely another series.

Normally I watch each new episode on a Monday evening but I'm having to work tonight and tomorrow night. Will have to wait until Wednesday.

Yes, Laura has really grown on me. Shadow seems a bit 2 dimensional. That's what happens when you do brooding I reckon.

OP posts:
NotCitrus · 19/06/2017 17:14

I'm sure Shadow was potentially black in the books, certainly described as some sort of nondescript shade that made him blend into shadows. But then it's a long time since I read it - I'm sure there was lots of swearing in it too!

TheHiphopopotamus · 19/06/2017 17:45

I don't think it matters that Shadow is black, does it? His colour isn't integral to the character as far as I'm aware. If they'd made Wednesday a black guy, you might have a point.

Pixel · 20/06/2017 23:46

No it doesn't really matter, it just riles me when they change books for the sake of it. There are parts where people ask him about his heritage, for example he's asked if he's part American Indian so I had a completely different picture of him in my head.

EllaHen · 25/06/2017 23:02

Finally got around to watching episode 8. Absolutely loved it. Think I might re-watch it all just before season 2 comes out. Grin

OP posts:
Dillite2 · 25/06/2017 23:51

What was that episode 8 all about? I keep thinking that I should take some shrooms before I watch each episode as then it might all make sense.

You know in that leprecunt episode- are they saying that the dead wife is Essie's descendant? And that the leprecaun feels indebted to her and that's why he is helping her?

EllaHen · 26/06/2017 06:33

I thought he just wanted his lucky coin back. I may have missed countless bits of plot though as there's just so much to take in.

OP posts:
SayNoToCarrots · 26/06/2017 06:45

I'm pretty sure Shadow is at least 'ambigiously brown' in the book, and the guy who plays him was a bit lighter when he was in Hollyoaks - maybe they cast him and then he got a tan. Or maybe they just cast the person they thought was best for the role.
