The smile on Leo's face during the interview was truly chilling. A brilliant piece of acting.

Composteleana · 17/04/2017 22:58

Clawdy It wasn't Trish's husband who hit him at the football, it was the kid's father - Lucas the cabbie. Hence the boy being vulnerable and easy prey for Leo. I had to rewind that bit to double check as agree it did look like Trish's husband had hit him if you weren't paying close attention

Dozer · 17/04/2017 22:59

It seems like a sociopathic serial rapist "always prepared" wasn't complicated enough for the creators in terms of having lots of suspects and the denoement, so they added in unrealistic "twists" like the 16 year old being (rapidly) groomed and becoming a rapist, and the rapist's gf being coerced into sex with others.

Was shit that this episode was sympathetic to Ed when he was a super creepy stalker and violent. Eg he was shown with his police officer daughter in church.

FeralBeryl · 17/04/2017 23:02

Graphista and anyone who got upset Flowers
I think some of the terminology used was chillingly accurate, and very sadly heard often by the police in rape investigations.

What I didn't get was we hadn't seen enough of Leo being charming along with arrogant to make it believable. We needed more history for context.

His girlfriend seemed very confident and in control around him too - I would have expected her to have been portrayed as more subservient and jumpy given that he was telling her to have sexual with other men/give false alibis etc.

His confession just came tumbling out - the questioning of Clive was harder.
Surely someone so arrogant wouldn't have needed or wanted to offload or confess?
He would have enjoyed making things more difficult for authorities as a means of extending his control.

This series has been like reaching in a handbag for clues, feeling for exciting possibilities, strange shapes and imagining what's what.
Then I feel like the last 30 mins was like someone emptying the handbag all over the table and it just being full of broken Avon lipsticks and bus tickets Angry

Even DH used the words Anti Climax

Graphista · 17/04/2017 23:02

"Fuck me, this is the 21st century isn't it? You really mean't to say that only ugly men in beige raincoats rape, didn't you? And thanks be to goodness, Broadchurch has dispelled that myth."

Treetop isn't saying they thought that, they're saying that's the myth. If you think that comments bad have you been on the recent rape threads? I think you were - there were far worse comments on them!

Dozer · 17/04/2017 23:05

Was also annoyed that Miller didn't counter the "he's an aberation, men aren't like that" bollocks.

Numerous unsavoury men still around: Ed the creepy stalker (not charged for ABH on Jim), the spying ex H (an ICT teacher and seemingly still in this role and not charged for his crime against Trish), creepy cab driver stealing womens keys, misogynist garage owner.

Charley50 · 17/04/2017 23:13

Well Christianity is all about forgiveness and redemption so maybe that's why they 'made' him go to church. The stalking thing was a bit stupid actually; like one more box for the writers to tick, but they forgot to think the implications through.

Graphista · 17/04/2017 23:13

Yea maybe namalt but a hell of a lot ARE. Very few of the men in my life are genuine decent men.

HemanOrSheRa · 17/04/2017 23:14

To be fair, I know it covered a horrible subject, but it is a drama series. I guess a lot of it was to keep us viewers guessing as part of the 'Whodunnit' despite the difficult subject matter.

Luckyme2 · 17/04/2017 23:15

Apologies if obvious but didn't they say Trish and Clive's DNA were both on the sock stuffed in her mouth? Which is why they turned up at Clive's house (coincidentally just as his wife found all the keys). It was his step son though so wouldn't share DNA. Or is that just another coincidence as Leo had all the socks and just happened to use one of Clive's?

Graphista · 17/04/2017 23:16

I think Leo had Clive's socks - wasn't it his job to wash the kit?

SirVixofVixHall · 17/04/2017 23:19

I thought it was the step-dad who hit Michael on the pitch, and Trish's husband then separated them?
Think the actor who played Mark was really good, very touching and convincing. I've struggled with Trish though- I found her very hard to like , which I can see doesn't matter to the plot, I still had sympathy for the character, but much of the time she seemed more like someone annoyed at getting the wrong Amazon delivery, than someone who has just been assaulted. Ditto Beth- her son's death so recent, and yet she came across more like a woman going through a painful yet transformative life change like divorce, than a woman who has lost her son in such terrible circumstances.
I love Olivia Coleman in everything she does, she has such a lovely and expressive face, and I love DT, so I found both of them very watchable- would have liked the twinkle of a romance though...to brighten the gloom and grimness of men.

HemanOrSheRa · 17/04/2017 23:19

Leo took the team kit saying it was his job. No idea whether he picked that sock or whether it was coincidence.

Composteleana · 17/04/2017 23:23

Clive threw the kit at Michael after hitting him in the game. Leo took it as he was in charge of kit. He later joked with Michael that he had told Clive he'd lost it and was making him wear too big ones etc - to make Michael laugh and feel that his new friend was getting one over on his nasty step dad - part of the grooming. When stuffing his 'party kit' in the bag on the night of the party he took a sock from Clive's kit - maybe just happened to be handy or maybe deliberate as framing Clive would be a bonus?

Luckyme2 · 17/04/2017 23:25

Ahh! Thank you. I knew there'd be people who'd paid more attention! Yes I remember him throwing the kit now!

Graphista · 17/04/2017 23:26

If the kit is done as a mixed load regularly presumable name tapes or initials on kit.

ktel1 · 17/04/2017 23:35

I thought this series was mediocre.

They really dragged it out over 6 episodes, a lot of the time the story didn't move forward whilst at the same time there was a lack of character development.

The fault lies entirely with the writing as the performances were fine under the circumstances.

IMO they needed a much better conclusion, something more intelligent and dramatic.

As was previously mentioned many of the theories on here were vastly superior.

All in all I think that Broadchurch should probably have ended after the first series which was very good.

After a frankly awful series 2 I think it was important for this series to be strong to compensate for that and leave an overall positive impression.

For me it didn't come close to achieving that.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 17/04/2017 23:38

I'm not really sure what I think!

Some brilliant acting though and I was sat like this Shock a lot!

ohfourfoxache · 17/04/2017 23:50

Perhaps the point of all the different suspects was that, when you look at it, there are threats (predominantly to women and children?) from so many different things. Whether it's rapists, or creepy exes, or stalkers, or the local taxi driver. The danger is all over and no one can be trusted 100%.

And to top it all off, the rapist wasn't even one of the main suspects- so how the hell is anyone supposed to work out who to trust?

I did think it was a shame that they showed it being so random when the majority of rapes are committed by a person the victim knows. Bit of a lost opportunity there I think

LifeOfBriony · 18/04/2017 00:36

Just finished watching and catching up on the thread. I've enjoyed this series (despite the subject matter). I was shocked that it was Michael, agree with PPs about the grooming. Clive picked up Leo and Michael along the road, but he can't have known about the rape at that point. I guess he put two and two together. I knew the fact that the rapes were in the summer was significant; I thought of university holidays but had forgotten (if we knew at all) that Leo had been to uni.

Would love to know what Kath had on Jim to blow his world apart (or whatever she said).

Ferrisday · 18/04/2017 00:53

I thought that tied everything up very well.
When Clive said 'I just gave them a lift' it all came together, Leo was responsible, the real nasty piece of work, and Clive was protecting Michael.
Hardy and Miller could have saved themselves a bit of work if they'd asked about gatecrashers, not just gone with the invite list.
pyschopaths need recognition for their work. That's why his confession was so easy.

Ferrisday · 18/04/2017 00:54

I cried too

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 18/04/2017 01:04

Farewell, Miller and Hardy: may you forever bicker fondly together... Brew Brew

I wasn't disappointed.

I was utterly repulsed by Leo's attitude - the actor was brilliant as I had my hand over my mouth when he was being so callous "It's just sex". I was thinking "OC please don't launch over the table at him and bugger up the conviction the way Joe's was for Danny's murder".

I am very fortunate never to have been through something as terrifying as that but I think they clearly showed some of the problems women still face today and there is danger almost everywhere. There were very few people Trish could have trusted at all. I think Ohfourfoxache and Graphista have put things far more eloquently so I won't try and repeat them.

A huge challenge that we face is to bring our sons up to be better and to eradicate the huge misogyny, every day sexism and entitlement that is still so prevalent. I think the scenes with Ellie smashing Tom's phone and her talking to him about consent were so important but I'd have liked to see that it made a bit of difference to Tom's view.

I was glad they didn't mess about with anything to do with Danny's murder. It was Joe and even with so many on here suggesting it was really Tom, I never thought it was. It was Joe and the conviction was buggered up due to Ellie (justifiably) attacking him. I quite liked the Latimers being on the side of the story line. I think it showed that horrendous things happen to a family and they are still there, having to live their life. I thought the scenes between Beth and Mark were really moving tonight. They love each other but as she said, their marriage was crumbling before Danny's death. I like the way they showed him leaving the church-yard and driving off.

I also really like the part played by Rory and was really glad they didn't try and sensationalise him and bring further disrepute to vicar/priesthood. I'm not hugely religious myself but it just feels like that's an easy duck to shoot at - he's a vicar he must be a paedo/murderer/rapist/have dark secrets. I thought his scene with Beth last week was really good. We all know what a priest 'should' say to Beth, as did she. But he just understood. He's human and can see how much of a drain Mark was.

Graphista · 18/04/2017 01:30

Iogo thanks I'm flattered - there are many on mn who speak more eloquently and sadly from a position of having been through the same as Trish.

I haven't but have some very small idea from a similar experience.

A thread ran recently about our experiences with sexual assault and unfortunately far too many of us have experienced at least one but usually several - groping, grinding, bra-snapping, unwanted kisses and worse. Several posters commented that if asked in real life as a one off question they'd have thought 'no I haven't really been a victim of sexual assault' but upon reading the thread and being reminded of incidents on nights out, with exs, with guys that were rejected by us, lecturers, bosses, customers... It's all too common.
