Well. Deflated.

MajesticWhine · 17/04/2017 22:18

I thought it was ok. The rape story was engaging and very well done, if rather upsetting. I thought it seemed a bit pointless to keep raking over the Latimer story if it wasn't going to actually go anywhere i.e. reveal new information about what happened, why Danny Latimer got killed etc.

HemanOrSheRa · 17/04/2017 22:19

It was a grim subject. I guess we are meant to feel sad, angry and deflated.

Dozer · 17/04/2017 22:19

Didn't like that Trish agreed to her ex H coming over: he spied on her, a violation: she should've told him to FO.

throughgrittedteeth · 17/04/2017 22:20

I only feel deflated because it's finished. I thought it was all pretty good. Millar needed to hear the "not all men" stuff because she has two sons and a paedophile/murdered ex husband. Plus all three series have focussed on men committing crimes.

LIZS · 17/04/2017 22:20

I wonder if all the boys had attended the computer club run by Rev Rory in series 1? Someone would have groomed Leo ...

Specialmeasuresofgin · 17/04/2017 22:20

3cats

'The final scene with Hardy and Miller, I was almost waiting for Mark Latimer's van to come careering over the cliff behind them! So glad it didn't'

That's exactly what dd said word for word.

SmilingButClueless · 17/04/2017 22:21

I thought there might have been a final scene with the vicar hinting that he knew some more secrets.

I actually liked that there was no reason why Trish was chosen; I don't know whether that would make it easier for her to try and deal with or more difficult.

The bit about Hardy saying that not all men are like that I thought was his attempt to help Miller, given that she had been married to a murderer, had a son involved with porn and had had to sit through the interview with Leo. Although I'm glad the writers didn't try to turn that relationship into a romance.

throughgrittedteeth · 17/04/2017 22:21

Yeah, I agree dozer, he's a class A prick.

sucue · 17/04/2017 22:22

"It is better to travel hopefully than to arrive".

Flightywoman · 17/04/2017 22:23

It was about the banality of evil...no grandstanding, no deep reasons, no "I'm a rapist because I'm damaged". Just sociopathic tendencies, a lonely and weak boy, fear and porn. Fucking ever-present porn.

Waitingforsherlock · 17/04/2017 22:24

I think that it was a good ending. The character of Leo challenged assumptions about rapists. His confession was chilling, the lack of empathy was the most upsetting thing about him. I do think that Michael would have been flattered by Leo's attention, was missing a positive male role model and gradually became de-sensitised by the hardcore porn Leo was exposing him too. He knew that what Leo was doing was morally wrong but was too drunk/ in his thrall to object.

The fact that it was planned yet opportunistic was the most chilling bit. Leo's justification of his actions surely point to him being a sociopath?

Waitingforsherlock · 17/04/2017 22:25

Sorry flightywoman bit of a cross-post.

Graphista · 17/04/2017 22:27

"I started to cry when Leo said "it's just sex, they've had sex before' - a very unnuanced way of how so many people view rape. Chilling"

I've posted on a few threads on here discussing rape. Several posters refuse to believe that rapists don't understand its rape not sex, the Broadchurch writers consulted rape charities and I believe spoke to other experts in the area.

Here was a very clear case of a violent rape and the main instigator does not see it as rape but as sex. Does not see the harm does not see why the victims are traumatised.

I know this is a thread about a fictional crime but it's a crime that happens daily in real life.

We HAVE to change the narrative, the belief that any sexual assault up to and including rape has anything to do with sex/attraction.

It's about power, control, exerting male authority.

We also HAVE to STOP blaming victims.

12 year olds that claim to be 16 to impress their mates.
Uni students that get drunk.
Wives/partners in controlling relationships.
Girls or women wearing revealing clothing.
Girls or women walking alone at night/in secluded areas.
Girls or women getting into a dodgy taxi.
Girls or women using public transport after dark.

NOT TO BLAME.

Put the blame where it belongs - on the perpetrators.

purplepaisley · 17/04/2017 22:28

Well, I got the bit about Leo filming it right!

I also expected Mark's van to drive off the cliff or float into shot at the end.

To be honest, I'm more stunned by the advert for cat soup that was on afterwards! Wtf is that about?

purplepaisley · 17/04/2017 22:31

On a more serious note, the interview/confession with Leo was just chilling.

Was in the edge of my seat all episode, brilliant performances from everyone. Will miss it.

Missanneshirley · 17/04/2017 22:31

I'd like to apologise to the musician Grin altho I did note that he was shown in the football scene which kept me suspecting him!
I found Leo's "I'm always prepared' very chilling - wonder if you look back if you'd see him with his horrible little rucksack

Benedikte2 · 17/04/2017 22:35

Purple cat soup is a complementary food for cats who have a diet of dried food. They ought to drink an adequate amount of water to prevent urinary problems (a killer in older male cats) but many don't like water. Not very calorific but provides liquor.

TreeTop7 · 17/04/2017 22:41

I thought that was very good.

I figured it would be Leo. I thought the writers would want to dispel the myth that physically attractive men with pretty girlfriends don't rape people because they don't "need" to.

The grooming aspect was a complete shock though.

Elendon · 17/04/2017 22:41

So what we learnt was that a yes to a self imposed invite by your abusive ex, who has been stalking you, is fine and your family will love you for it.

That bloke sleeping in your garden after your rape? He's okay because he could have stopped it and gosh is he feeling the pain now.

Watching a lot of pron leads you to be a sexual deviant.

The latter is probably the only thing I agree with.

Clawdy · 17/04/2017 22:42

I was disappointed. The whole Leo and young Lucas thing didn't ring true. And amongst lots of small improbable incidents, as if Trish's husband would deliberately smash a young kid in the face during a match without repercussions.

Elendon · 17/04/2017 22:45

I thought the writers would want to dispel the myth that physically attractive men with pretty girlfriends don't rape people because they don't "need" to.

Fuck me, this is the 21st century isn't it? You really mean't to say that only ugly men in beige raincoats rape, didn't you? And thanks be to goodness, Broadchurch has dispelled that myth.

Riversleep · 17/04/2017 22:49

Did we ever work out why Most chapels dad kept a load of keys in a locked drawer? Odd thing to do, and an odd thing to put in there. Trish's keys alone would be plausible as he was trying to cover for the son.
I'd forgotten about Rory's computer club. Maybe they were going to make him one of the baddies but couldn't because well, he's Rory! That's the only explanation as to what he has been doing in 3 series!

Riversleep · 17/04/2017 22:50

That should say why Michael's dad had the keys. Not sure what happened there Confused

HemanOrSheRa · 17/04/2017 22:55

I think he was 'just' a weird and sad, possibly abusive man in a very weird situation River. I found the interview with him near the end when he told what he knew and begged for them to say it was him very sad.
