Anyone else watching this chilling drama based on a Len Deighton novel ? The Germans won the Battle of Britain and now occupy Britain.
Includes quite a bit of shagging too, so I am told.

I am going to watch next week, but totally agree about the mumbling and Sam Riley's voice is not easy on the ear, I am sure there are actors out there who can annunciate their words properly. The Man in the high castle is better, imo.

Davros · 20/02/2017 13:30

If they follow the book within reason, the story gets much more interesting

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 20/02/2017 13:39

I've downloaded the book, will get reading on the train tonight.

coldcanary · 20/02/2017 14:19

I'm going to give this a go tonight purely because Sam Riley was the only thing that made Pride, Prejudice and Zombies worth watching!

ThickBleach · 20/02/2017 16:44

It's quite an eerie depiction of how things might have been if the Germans had won the war. Hmm as opposed to a more up-beat vision of subjugation and occupation?

I thought that this sounded great in principle but was so disappointed by it. The script was terribly cliched. In addition to the whisperin the acting was quite hammy in places and the characters so stereotypical and one-dimensional.

The portrayal of women was very disappointing.

user1486915549 · 20/02/2017 17:02

I loved the book but very disappointed by the programme.
Slow and boring and both OH and myself thought the acting was hammy and wooden. The actors can't all be awful so maybe the director wanted them to play it like that ???
Oh, and Sam Riley will damage his voice if he carries on like that !

eddiemairswife · 20/02/2017 17:14

I enjoyed it. I nearly always watch dramas with the subtitles on. I thought at first it was age-related deafness (!), but I can hear the news perfectly well at a low volume. It's just that the actors are more naturalistic than previously.

Rhubarb01 · 20/02/2017 17:50

My point regarding the "eerie depiction" was just an observation not a suggestion that it should appear any other way. We:re often reminded that the world we live in could have been very different and this certainly shows us that.

winewolfhowls · 21/02/2017 09:15

I really liked it, although I absolutely love the man in the high castle.
I think the most interesting theme to emerge is the relationship between general kettleman (?) and the ss guy that's just arrived.

GloriousGoosebumps · 21/02/2017 15:31

I seem to be in the minority but I really enjoyed the first episode and I'm looking forward to episode number two. I didn't have a problem with mumbling, however, I did find Sam Riley's voice raspy and distracting.

rollonthesummer · 21/02/2017 21:22

I really enjoyed it! We did have the subtitles on though!

Rhubarb01 · 21/02/2017 21:31

It might not have come across from my previous comments but I did enjoy it too and likewise I used subtitles right from the start so followed what was going on. I've downloaded the book to read too. There's been a fair amount of discussion about the mumbling on the radio today. I feel a bit sorry for Sam Riley as it does detract from the story - one 'expert' commentator suggested the voice being used is part of the actor's characterisation and not really to do with sound quality which in the light of all the criticism makes me feel even sorrier for him.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 21/02/2017 21:40

I quite enjoyed it

And Sam Riley was superb as Ian Curtis in 'Control'

phoenix1973 · 21/02/2017 21:43

Man in the high castle pisses all over this.
I fell asleep.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 21/02/2017 21:47

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was great fun though.

PrincessPlod · 21/02/2017 21:53

I found it boring although dh loves it

Megatherium · 22/02/2017 08:19

I watched on iPlayer and was getting sleepy part way through, but it was latish at night. When I went back to it I thought it picked up, and the trailer for next week looks promising.

Davros · 22/02/2017 09:01

I got bored with The Man in the High Castle. I think this will be good as it's a limited number of episodes and there's a helluva story coming if they generally follow the book which they have so far

BagelGoesWalking · 26/02/2017 22:31

That's Sam Riley's natural voice. Same in P&P and Zombies, I love it, it's very sexy! IIRC, he lives in Germany so presumably fluent in German, which prob helped him get the part.

I don't mind the slowish pace, enjoying it so far.

Peregrina · 26/02/2017 22:36

It was much easier to follow today, perhaps because we put the sub-titles on right at the beginning. It really brings it home to you, how difficult it would be to know who to trust, and who was telling you the truth.

satsumasunrise · 26/02/2017 22:39

We gave up after half an hour.

I hate Sam Riley's voice. I don't know if that's his real voice or one he's put on but it's horrible.

Why has he been cast in a prime time drama when he is unable to enunciate? I'd be so pissed off if I was an out of work actor.

I was really looking forward to watching this but they've ruined it.

Dulra · 27/02/2017 09:45

I am still sticking with it but getting confused but I think that is just because the situation they are portraying would have been so confusing. Who do you trust? who are you working for? who are your answerable to?

Sam's character is a police superintendent who is suddenly having to take orders from the SS while the whole time there is a resistance movement going on which he is obviously supportive of which is apparent when he lets the girl go free at the house. He is really caught between a rock and hard place. Work for the SS and get killed by the resistance, work for the resistance and get killed by SS Confused.

As for the mumbling wasn't as bad this week but did put the subtitles on.

eddiemairswife · 27/02/2017 10:54

It's the kind of programme I need to watch with someone else, who can answer all my annoying questions......who is he? what did he say? where are they now?
The chap who was killed in the bombed house, Jimmy, he is in the Radio Times cast list, but I don't remember seeing him previously.

BagelGoesWalking · 27/02/2017 12:46

Jimmy was a younger policeman (seen on uniform in ep 1) who was asked by Archer (Sam Riley) to go and follow Spode (I think that's right)
