Anyone else watching this chilling drama based on a Len Deighton novel ? The Germans won the Battle of Britain and now occupy Britain.
Includes quite a bit of shagging too, so I am told.

Sam Riley was in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies; he had that rasping voice then as well. Everyone else seems to have caught it now! So affected amd annoying.
It might turn out to be good, sonam prepared to watch the next ep.

Peregrina · 19/02/2017 22:40

I thought my hearing was going, but DH said that it's the fashion now to mumble in TV series.

Fell asleep part way but then woke up again, so I will continue to watch.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 19/02/2017 22:42

Very film noir. I think I could get thoroughly creeped out by the 'constantly on the edge of danger' feel if I didn't keep half an eye on my knitting.

And I rather like Sam Riley, whatever voice he's doing Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2017 22:42

I got bored. It looked good on paper.

Shallishanti · 19/02/2017 22:43

glad it wasn't just me who couldn't hear!

Rhubarb01 · 19/02/2017 22:43

I don't think subtitles are a sign of age. I know lots of people who regularly watch dramas with subtitles (me included). I just don't think the sound quality/annunciation is what it used to be. I wonder if it's lots more location shooting with mics and 'natural' speaking voices.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/02/2017 22:45

There are going to be loads of complaints about the mumbling.

It's good but his voice is going to get very annoying very quickly.

MissWimpyDimple · 19/02/2017 22:48

Ha I had the subtitles on too and I'm fluent in German so really shouldn't have needed them.

I was annoyed by his voice too. Everyone seems to be going in for the gravelly voice. It works on some but not all. But fed up with watching things in the dark though. (Taboo!)

With the black screen and mumbling it's so hard to follow!

hmcAsWas · 19/02/2017 22:52

Reassuring to see that I wasn't the only one who bailed after getting bored (I gave it 20 minutes before quitting) - I guess it's just not that good (rather than something wrong with my attention span)

fairiesandelves · 19/02/2017 23:14

I could barely hear it as well! Glad wasn't just me. Found it mumbling and incoherent kept rewinding but still couldn't understand some of what they were saying !

paulapantsdown · 19/02/2017 23:18

I wish the BBC would employ some competent sound engineers. If it was actually interesting despite being hard to hear I would have stuck it out. Have turned over, bored.

DesolateWaist · 19/02/2017 23:18

I quite liked it. Twitter was full of people complaining about the mumbling.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 19/02/2017 23:23

Sam Riley was in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Thanks. I knew I'd seen him in something else recently.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 19/02/2017 23:24

Wimpy - How is the actors' German? Does it sound like comedy "Allo Allo" style German or are they doing OK?

Peregrina · 19/02/2017 23:58

I thought the English actors' German was OK, and the Germans' are German actors.

PageStillNotFound404 · 20/02/2017 00:15

I quite enjoyed it and will tune in again next week, but count me as another one irritated by the terrible mumbling. Sam Riley sounded as though he were doing an impersonation of John Hurt c.1985. Ironic that when the Germans spoke English they were more understandable than the British actors!

TheWinterOfOurDiscountTents · 20/02/2017 00:18

Almost everyone who speaks german is actually german.

Dulra · 20/02/2017 08:02

I too was irritated by the raspy mumbly voice of main character but I do think it was good and I like where it is going. I like the theme of what could have happened had it all gone the other way. It gives a good insight into what it must feel like to have occupying forces on your streets controlling your organisations and being Irish gave me a little sense of what it may have been like for my grandparents and great grandparents living under British rule (not that I'm comparing the British forces to the gestapo!)

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 20/02/2017 08:07

I did have to put the subtitles on in the end though.

DH speaks German and said he found at times the German easier to follow that the mumbling English Hmm

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 20/02/2017 11:57

I just watched on iPlayer with subtitles and I liked it.

It's dark and mumbly but that seems a BBC trademark these days.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 20/02/2017 11:58

Agree that the German was nice and clear and easy to understand.

I only speak schoolgirl German and I found it easier to make out than the English.

Clawdy · 20/02/2017 12:39

Agree with whoever said he sounds like John Hurt, I thought the same. But so inaudible, I put sub titles on too. It's getting to be too common a complaint now......how come programmes like Neighbours and Coronation Street sound so much clearer!

ReggaeShark · 20/02/2017 12:54

Slow, badly lit and mumble. Zzzzz
