CremeEggThief · 07/02/2017 20:24

Yay, Debbie! Grin

CremeEggThief · 07/02/2017 20:26

Argh, here we go again with Rochelle and the can opener!Wink

fourquenelles · 07/02/2017 20:26

It's lovely to see that the programme is following Debbie.

Rochelle is getting better at opening cans too.

derxa · 07/02/2017 20:27

Again with the bloody tin opener!! Grin

CremeEggThief · 07/02/2017 21:01

I really enjoyed that episode. Glad that they're keeping us updated on Debbie and her status as a single, working woman too.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/02/2017 21:08

I'm glad Rochelle seems to have mastered that tin opener - without severely lacerating herself in the process! I had my heart in my mouth all the time she was using it, expecting haemorrhage at any moment.

I liked this episode - it did skip past the General Steike pretty quickly but I guess there wasn't much they could do to include it when it was only one of the ten 'years' they had to cover.

Trills · 07/02/2017 22:15

Just catching up - noticed the "housewife who doesn't have a servant" emphasised at the beginning.

I've recently read the Cazalet Chronicles (1930s-60s) and people who like this kind of history might enjoy it. Lots of details on domestic life.

Trills · 07/02/2017 22:27

Oh yes, go get pissed with Giles, the 20s are going to be great for YOU.

ppeatfruit · 08/02/2017 09:46

Creme the fish was on TOP of the LID of the large pot! But there are things like fish soups and stews , aren't there?

Anyone wonder why the women didn't get their haircut in the famous 20s bob? It was so shocking that women raised their skirts AND cut of all that long hair , real freedom. Grin

Maybe they didn't want to but they could have worn wigs instead.

I Loved the charleston lesson with Ola and ? from Strictly Grin

Ref. the drinking I noticed that the Dad got a very red face. Shock I'm not sure how much fun the hangovers would've been Grin.

fourquenelles · 08/02/2017 11:42

Rochelle now needs to get a handle on presentation of the food. She is a bit of a dolloper Grin

5foot5 · 08/02/2017 13:18

Glad that they're keeping us updated on Debbie and her status as a single, working woman too.

Yes I am very pleased about that too.

My prediction: when it gets to the Second World War they will have the girls doing some sort of war work and they will find themselves working in exactly the same role as Debbie

LilacPeony · 08/02/2017 13:48

I think Debbie's got really good social skills. I like the daughters too. I felt sorry for them with the hairstyles this week though. I liked it last week when Rochelle was cooking and the dad said "Even if we don't like it we'll say we like it."

ppeatfruit · 08/02/2017 15:13

Those horrible marrow fat tinned peas, I remember them from school dinners YEUCH YEUCH Grin.

I think that the dad has always been very nice about Rochelle's cooking, he's a saint!

ppeatfruit · 08/02/2017 15:18

Lilac Those hairstyles were from the pre 1920s to 1923 approx , all the young women were bobbing their hair afterwards up till the 30s.

A bit of a designer mistake there. Grin

LilacPeony · 08/02/2017 16:08

I wonder what hair dressing they'd put on their hair as it made it look flat and greasy. Not trying to insult the girls as they usually look nice. Maybe that was the fashion of the time (until 1923! Smile)

ppeatfruit · 08/02/2017 17:12

Yes it was ! With turbans sometimes (i've got a print of a Vogue cover from 1922).

Trills · 08/02/2017 19:00

My prediction: when it gets to the Second World War they will have the girls doing some sort of war work and they will find themselves working...

with Debbie as their SUPERVISOR because she has experience of working and they don't :o

CremeEggThief · 08/02/2017 19:49

I like that, Trills.

diddl · 09/02/2017 21:48

I loved the black patterned dress that one of the girls was wearing for the Victory breakfast.

It's a bit disjointed though as women that had had cooks would have learnt some skills by now & probably not have wanted to have a whole meal of canned food.

Plus they might have found someone who would have gone in to help with the main meal of the day?

Am also sure that the girls would have been helping a lot more.

Also-tinned peaches & custard???!!!

Trills · 09/02/2017 21:50

I had tinned peaches and custard in the 80s and 90s.

diddl · 09/02/2017 21:54

Seems odd to me-we used to have cream or ice cream-I guess taht would be weird to some people!

It's just the thought of the hot custard on the cold fruit.

Now if it was a crumble...Grin

Trills · 09/02/2017 22:05

Or condensed milk?

Trills · 09/02/2017 22:06

Crumble is not for peaches

Crumble is for apples, blackberries, maybe rhubarb.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 09/02/2017 22:09

I love this but when Rochelle was ripping the bread apart to make the canapes!! It's not hard, you can't be that bad! They were awful. It didn't even need any skill.

DesolateWaist · 09/02/2017 22:10

I had tinned peaches and custard in the 80s and 90s.

I have tinned peaches and custard in my Ocado basket now simply because of this program.
