I was hoping gilescoren might make another appearance on this thread, but I reckon you have frightened him off, Bunty Grin

franke · 31/01/2017 20:24

I'm really enjoying this tonight. Loved the veggie Suffragette dinner party.

JaneJeffer · 31/01/2017 20:27

I love Giles Coren especially when he's greedily stuffing his face and drinking alcohol Blush

Akire · 31/01/2017 20:29

The women must be bored senseless all day at home!

I know, but really felt that the suffragette thing gave them something to get their teeth into. And they're really worried about Debbie leaving Grin

JaneJeffer · 31/01/2017 20:32

But in those days Debbie would have been glad to have a job and nice employees.

JaneJeffer · 31/01/2017 20:33

Employers!

franke · 31/01/2017 20:33

Really interesting that there was so much German influence on the food pre WW1

franke · 31/01/2017 20:34

That's true Jane

CremeEggThief · 31/01/2017 20:54

Rochelle's forte is NOT the kitchen! SmileNo wonder she was sad to say bye to Debbie.

Debbie will probably have an easier time as a Land Girl, than as a cook and maid-of-all-work. I felt SO sorry for her last week. Imagine if your reward for cooking and 8 course meal for 8 was all the washing up and drying of all the cutlery and crockery!SadShock

JaneJeffer · 31/01/2017 20:56

They all look a bit unkempt now.

CremeEggThief · 31/01/2017 21:00

Good episode. Looking forward to next week's 20s one too.

Morsecode · 31/01/2017 21:43

We are inching closer to Miss Marple now, aren't we? Housemaids at the movies in their Sunday best on their day off, women on bikes. Oh, and Belgian refugees for Poirot!

I'm very impressed by Debbie, so capable! And the Robshawe girls, they are such good sports.

DesolateWaist · 31/01/2017 22:18

Debbie is wonderful. The boy clearly had a crush on her.

However, I don't think a 19 year old has been called Debbie since 1989.

Mrscaindingle · 31/01/2017 23:28

I love this show and I was really glad to see the Robshawes again, Rochelle has definitely grown on me and I think the children are lovely.

My 16 year old wouldn't be seen dead with me in our normal clothes let alone cycling through town in Edwardian garb. I think they have entered into the spirit of the programme with real enthusiasm.

ppeatfruit · 01/02/2017 10:50

They all look a bit unkempt now Unless they had a ladies maid those hairstyles needed an awful lot of looking after. They had 'rats' or sort of sausage shaped stuffing that had to be put under their hair to keep that strange style!!

Great to see the suffragesttes and the granddaughter of a Pankhurst, also vegetarian food HOORAY !!

So funny when the mum was 'trying' to light the gas stove and cook with PAPER BAGS IN A GAS STOVE FGS!!!! I knew they would burn as soon as I saw her with them. I bet Debbie was pissed off when she saw the mess on the floor in HER kitchen Grin . Though good for Mrs Rob. doing the washing up . Why don't the daughters help ?????? I noticed one of them bring in some food once during the war years. Maybe the editing is cutting out stuff.

specialsubject · 01/02/2017 11:05

Love the robshaws, all personable and likeable. Especially as the kids can talk without saying 'like' every third word which is what makes so.many late teens /early twenties so dull.

Hope Rochelle is OK though as she doesn't look well.

5foot5 · 01/02/2017 11:44

I was delighted when they brought in the hay box. Anyone else here read "The Children Who Lived In A Barn"?

I think Debbie is a little star. I hope they find some way of involving her in later episodes. I love the way she just rolls up her sleeves and quietly gets on with things no matter what is thrown at her. Imagine how many 19 year olds, when presented with a dead pigeon, would just set to and turn it in to a lovely meal. DH said "Well she has been trained as a chef", but even so at 19 she can't be that experienced.

ppeatfruit · 01/02/2017 12:58

That's what I thought about Debbie 5foot5 They said she IS training to be a chef. I don' think Rochelle could've done the prep. of the pigeon somehow ! (I know I couldn't!).

DesolateWaist · 01/02/2017 14:06

And she didn't turn a hair. Just plucked it, chopped off its head and pulled out the guts.
I doubt many of us could do that. I couldn't even watch it!

Akire · 01/02/2017 17:51

She must have had some decent training and if had gone to college at 16 would done basic course of 3/4 y by now. Dare say she has a crash course in strange food as no fun to watch if she couldn't or give them all good posining

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 01/02/2017 17:59

Rochelle could do with that training Grin.

specialsubject · 01/02/2017 18:25

And debbie also doesn't use 'like' as a preposition. She produced marvels and I hope this show gives a big career boost to someone who, for once, can cook more than cutesy woo cake.

pointyshoes · 01/02/2017 19:04

Yes 5foot5. As soon as they mentioned the haybox I straightaway thought of "the children who lived in a barn". Loved that book

HalfShellHero · 01/02/2017 21:58

Marking my place! Love this show, should be on bbc 1 i reckon reality tv done in a good way.....although gutting the pidgeon *bleurgh could have done without that..
