OP posts:

I think though that if they had been sent away to work as Land Girls etc then there would have been no one to have dinner with!

JaneJeffer · 22/02/2017 12:59

It was lovely when they went dancing. They really enjoyed it.

I don't know how the women managed to send their children off to strangers. It must have been heartbreaking.

Clawdy · 22/02/2017 13:44

My mum's little brother was evacuated to the countryside, like Fred. He didn't enjoy it though! His dad went to visit him, and found him staggering across the farmyard carrying two heavy buckets. He said "Dad, take me 'ome!" He was on the next train back to Manchester with his dad.

DesolateWaist · 22/02/2017 17:30

In our village there was a man who had been evacuated out there. His family were killed back in London so he stayed in the village the rest of his life.

twostepsister · 22/02/2017 18:06

My dad told me years ago his family took in a young lad, Robbie for 6 months from London. My dad and his brother adored him and treated him like a younger brother. On his first evening Robbie went missing and they searched high and low for him until they found him asleep underneath my Grandma's bed. When he woke up they asked him why he was sleeping under the bed and he said it was because he was scared and always slept under his mum's bed.
My dad said when he returned back to London his family missed him terribly and he has never forgotten him 77 years later.

You think it's cool how the GIs would like "Push you to do something" do you, eh? Eh?

TreeTop7 · 22/02/2017 23:25

Loved Brandon's reaction to the grapefruit. I think it was the first time he'd ever really complained about something.

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/02/2017 23:59

Trills I think the "pushing" was to do with the dancing - getting pushed to twirl one way and then the other.

It's what happens with jiving so expect it was the same for the jitterbug.

SpringerS · 23/02/2017 00:47

I really love how affectionate Fred is with his family. I thought it in the Christmas episodes where you see him walking with his arm around Brandon during a 90s shopping trip, iirc. And again in this episode when he's cuddled up to Rochelle on the couch, glad to be home with his family (after their whole 3 days apart). He's 12 years old and yet they're all so easily physically loving, even on camera on national television. It's utterly refreshing.

Trills · 23/02/2017 07:31

I know it was to do with dancing in that context. I was making a joke, referring to the reputation that the American soldiers had regarding the ladies.

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/02/2017 08:16

Ah. Sorry Trills Blush

ppeatfruit · 27/02/2017 14:32

Yes they are a lovely family. DH said "They don't want to be stars" I think he's right, they don't mind roughing it ( a bit) either.

The pig swill bins stopped after the bse scare. Stupidly imo, the farmers could always ask for veg. leftovers not meat. I give our veg. leftovers to the neighbour with chickens, sheep etc. they love them!

TreeTop7 · 27/02/2017 16:07

I ageee that they don't want to be stars, but I suspect that since the success of series 1 they've had quite a bit of unwanted attention when going about their lives. Brandon especially is the sort of affable person viewers think they know, and want to chat with. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the daughters have had some sleazebags irritating them on social media.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/02/2017 07:00

Last one tonight

Been fun watching

And yes the family seem to love each other which is nice

I'm not sure how old the girls are, but I think at 18 they would have to do war work unless they were at school or university.

Miranda is 19
Rosalind is 17
Fred is 12

In WWII they called up women aged 20-30 initially, and then extended it to older women where required. So neither girl is old enough to have been called up, and as they are in a middle class family they wouldn't have been as in need for the money as Debbie, their 19y maid in the first few episodes.

JaneJeffer · 28/02/2017 20:55

Aww I'm going to miss this. It was lovely.

OneWithTheForce · 28/02/2017 21:07

That was lovely. Another one who is going to miss it. Think they could have invited Debbie to dinner though! and cooked for her for a change and show of appreciation for how hard she worked!

RiverdaleJughead · 28/02/2017 21:48

Ooh how nice Rochelle looked!!! I think she put on a little makeup and she suited her own style! Maybe I'm just a bit affectionate towards her though x

RiverdaleJughead · 28/02/2017 21:49

Also think she's really funny :')

OneWithTheForce · 28/02/2017 21:50

She is funny! I really love her too.

Clawdy · 28/02/2017 22:14

I've loved the series, and I love the Robshaws, but I agree Debbie should have been at that dinner party.

fussychica · 01/03/2017 15:16

I assumed as she was toasted as an absent friend that she had been invited but couldn't make it. Perhaps she had got a dream job, I hope so anyway.
Loved this series and the family. Rochelle seems a great laugh.

TreeTop7 · 01/03/2017 15:43

I hope they come back for another series. I liked Debbie too, she added an interesting dimension and I hope she gets more tv cookery work if that is what she wants.

I'd love to see one of them on Strictly.

I wonder what became of the other family that did something similar a year or so ago? Are they recording anything else?

barcelo · 02/03/2017 16:01

I have just started watching this on catch up.

Am in the 1920s at the moment.

Trills · 02/03/2017 21:13

"Absent friends" are also often dead. I'm glad that's not the case with Debbie.
