Sorry, yes meant Jennifer's stories. I didn't realise it was that soon into the series.

NewtScamandersNaughtyNiffler · 22/01/2017 22:34

Oh. I loved it. Tricky horrible storylines but thats why I love it.

I blubbed as always

MrsJamin · 22/01/2017 22:48

Calling @shelaghturner ! We need to congratulate you in person!

SESthebrave · 22/01/2017 22:59

Except for the horrible Sr Ursula, it was wonderful and I cried and cried.

DesolateWaist · 22/01/2017 23:07

What i was wondering was the time line.

What year was it when it started? Certainly pre-war. Now it's the 50s. So how long has it been? How does that match up with the age of the Turner's children?

Akire · 22/01/2017 23:07

Was a good one, and yes know stories are written around social issues of the day. So would be real life for someone somewhere. Not sure how cynitha has gone from totally fine to verging on nervous breakdown. What was that about words in dreams?? Totally confusing.

DesolateWaist · 22/01/2017 23:11

I've just realised it can't be pre war as it was about the NHS being set up which was after the war.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 22/01/2017 23:12

It started late 50's now it's early 60's. Think but not sure last series was 1962.

DesolateWaist · 22/01/2017 23:15

Ah. I had managed to convince myself that the 1st series was in the 40s. I was wrong.

Lunde · 22/01/2017 23:28

They said somewhere in today's episode that it was spring 1962.

I think that the violent husband in today's episode was meant to reflect the changing East End - the Krays were active in the 1960s

NewtScamandersNaughtyNiffler · 22/01/2017 23:54

NHS was set up in 1948.
Tonights episode was 1962

NormaSmuff · 23/01/2017 07:21

But surely we have had 1962 before with Thalidomide, infact i thought Thalidomide was 1963.
I enjoyed it though.
Horrible sister ursula

NormaSmuff · 23/01/2017 07:22

Wiki tells me Thalidomide was taken off the market in 1961, so ignore me.

Notjustuser1458393875 · 23/01/2017 07:26

There have been domestic violence stories before. Men hitting their wives is very much not a 60s thing. The new bit was their ability to leave - the tension between the mother, who had stuck it out in violent relationships for some level of security, and the daughter, who was willing to set security aside to get away.

TeaBelle · 23/01/2017 07:31

I thought the part where sister Ursula offered mickey the biscuit tin was very clever. Not so one dimensional after all. And although the nuns (prior to this episide) have all generally been lovely, I think that might be a bit unusual, so having someone much stricter is an interesting reflection

BarchesterFlowers · 23/01/2017 08:26

I liked it - strong storyline. The sisters did seem to feast an awful lot and have lots of lovely teas so a bit of correction is fine - no biscuits and tiny rations is Shock ing though.

I love CTM though, I know it is a drama rather than a documentary but I love social history and think it is generally a fair portrayal.

I am expecting sad things to happen with the Turners, either mum or baby. Sad.

I lived in Wapping for a few years. I find it interesting how all but the roughest streets are 'polished' and clean, from an era when women generally stayed at home and took massive amounts of pride in their homes.

I think the new Evil Sister in charge, plus being in the house when the abusive father smashed the window was meant to affect Cynthia wasn't it?

BarchesterFlowers · 23/01/2017 08:28

Oh and Nurse Crane - what a fab character. I work with a retired nurse who reminds me of NC, couldn't imagine anyone better to have around in a crisis.

NormaSmuff · 23/01/2017 08:31

I am sure Sister/Mother Ursula will show her softer side again, and she sent that novice to the wrong place, so perhaps Dr Turner will oust her somehow. make her see sense.

Braceybracegirl · 23/01/2017 09:04

Why has sister julienne been demoted?

BarchesterFlowers · 23/01/2017 09:05

She came back from the Christmas special to a call from the Mother House to tell her that her strict temporary replacement would be in charge.

NormaSmuff · 23/01/2017 09:08

So very unfair for Sister Julienne Sad and everyone else

Braceybracegirl · 23/01/2017 11:10

Yes but why? Has she done something wrong? Or they want someone stricter? Or we just don't know? I didn't see the Christmas one.

NormaSmuff · 23/01/2017 11:14

no, she hasnt done anything wrong, perhaps no one else wants Ursula
the rest of them, including julienne, went to south africa

BarchesterFlowers · 23/01/2017 11:27

I went to a convent museum at the weekend. The ethos of the place changed a lot depending on who was in charge, so one mother superior remained true to the founding principles and then the next one had other ideas so things changed.

Or it could simply be a question of who you know combined with a bit of empire building while they were away in Africa.

Still, an unwelcome change it seems.

Braceybracegirl · 23/01/2017 11:33

That's very unfair (reminds self it's not true!)
