The OA, anyone watching?

Have watched three episodes so far and am liking it.

OP posts:
TheHiphopopotamus · 21/12/2016 18:04

I've just binge watched it all and not quite sure what to make of it.

As as pp said, it started well, but it kind of sagged a bit towards the end. Did she make the story up about being in the cellar? Did Homer exist? I'm a bit confused.

I did like the cast of supporting characters though. Is there going to be a S2?

CrazyDuchess · 21/12/2016 18:57

I agree with the others.... not sure what I make of it....

schmack · 21/12/2016 21:24

have watched it all now, interesting. Deliberately ambiguous about the veracity I think.

TheHiphopopotamus · 21/12/2016 21:47

Oh, the other thing I wondered about, seeing as Alfonso (?) found the book about Russian Oligarchs was whether she'd made that up as well? I'm assuming she was actually adopted as her parents spoke about it but how easy would it have been to just buy a random kid about 15 years ago?

It does seem to point to her being mentally ill rather than anything she was suggesting.

OohMavis · 21/12/2016 22:23

Finished it just now. I'd had a hunch from around the middle that it may all just be in her head, now I'm not sure.

I actually really, really loved it.

The movements were weird. But then I realised they're quite similar, in a way, to the Haka. The intention I think is to evoke emotion the same way it does. Didn't get me though until the end and I actually got quite emotional! Blush

I get the feeling I've missed some clues. Trees were significant, but I don't know how.

OohMavis · 21/12/2016 22:24

Oh and so many questions about the last episode. Why was he sneaking about her house?! Not French, the therapist. Why was he there?

DoloresTheRunawayTrain · 21/12/2016 22:33

I think the point of the books was to introduce the ambiguity. You know she was adopted. You know someone with the name Homer exists. You know there was a bus crash in Russia around the time she claimed. These were all things she could also have researched for her story if she's delusional. So they were introduced to show how without proof her claims are all very intangible. However then you also have the point that she ended up in exactly that place outside the school cafeteria and got a life threatening injury, exactly the kind of thing that she said allowed the group of captives to do what they did. Plus it was the actions of the other 5 people she had told her story to that very subtly influenced those events in the school. Or at least that's what is suggested. The whole thing is merely suggested as a truth and then you have opposing possibilities put to you, yet the desired outcome is still achieved. So you are left wondering did anything any of them do have any impact on any of those events.

schmack · 22/12/2016 01:46

I'm wondering whether the therapist / FBI put the books there to discredit her storey maybe? don't want the populace freaking out about the supernatural?

TheHiphopopotamus · 22/12/2016 09:26

I like that idea schmack but I was the under the impression that she hadn't told him the full story (I may be wrong).

OohMavis · 22/12/2016 20:35

Can The OA even read text? The books were all in text. Wouldn't she be reading in braille?

TheHiphopopotamus · 22/12/2016 20:51

Ooh, good point mavis!!

spencerreidswife · 22/12/2016 21:34

Oooh Mavis you are a genius!! I can't imagine she could remember to read from being a young child especially such in depth books

Mrsemcgregor · 31/12/2016 09:32

I know this thread is a week or so old but I just finished it last night and have questions!

Why was she tagged at the end? What exactly had she done that was criminal?

ICJump · 02/01/2017 08:10

Yes I wondered about the tagging.

She was have been able to read because she uses the computer to up load the YouTube video

JudithTaverner · 02/01/2017 08:25

Oh I really enjoyed this (watched it over 2 days), but don't have a clue what the ending meant! I think this is the intention though.

I think the FBI person planted the books - they weren't opened.

I thought that Hap (Jason Isaacs) was really good - disturbing good!

The dance was a bit silly I though.

LadyGlitterSparklesSeriously · 02/01/2017 11:54

Her computer was still set up with audio assistance though.

ICJump · 03/01/2017 05:50

But we see her typing.

madamginger · 03/01/2017 11:39

I just finished watching this, loved it but so many unanswered questions. Like why the hell she didn't just tell her creepy mother to leave her alone. She's 28, an adult and her mother treated her like she was a naughty teenager.
And how did Steves parents not notice him turn back up after the had him 'kidnapped'?

LadyGlitterSparklesSeriously · 03/01/2017 11:59

On a braille keyboard Grin

OnionKnight · 03/01/2017 15:06

I've watched it, finished it last week.

Eight hours wasted and there's so many moments of stupidity not to mention the plot holes, it's like the writers gave up.

I mean what was the therapist doing in the house, why was Prarie wearing an ankle bracelet, how did all the parents know that they were in the abandoned house and why did everyone have to leave their doors open etc?

Oh god, not to mention how stupid and naive Prairie is.

I could go on such as why was the teacher fired towards the end but I literally don't want to waste any more time thinking about it.

ScruffyTheJanitor · 04/01/2017 13:13

My theory is a very simple one.
Basically, after studying the show, re watching, reading other theories and getting into the deep recesses of the OA.... I reckon.... The writers are clueless.

Grin

I think that they've purposefully left things very open and unclear because they don't know the meaning themselves. Now they're reading Reddit and other places to pick out fan theories that they think fit the best. If they Gert a second series, they'll use the fan theories and write them as if that was the plan all along.

ScruffyTheJanitor · 04/01/2017 13:38

I'd also just add.

When did OA learn to read English? She was a Russian child when she went blind, didn't get Herr sight back until much later...
If they weren't her books, who's were they?
If they were the FBI guys, what does he have to gain from framing OA?
Why, considering she pushed Hap down the stairs, didn't she follow him, kill him, take the keys from his belt and let everyone out? Oh no... Best to break a window and run... Even if she can't see... Yep much better idea.
Why didn't Homer kill Hap in Cuba (whaperever it was)? He knew hap was a Dr, they flew in a private plane that would be registered to someone, it took off from somewhere, the FBI or police could easily check Homers story as he knew the names of at least 4 other unconnected kidnap victims.
Front door open? And not once did anyone moan that all their stuff was nicked.
Parents finding the abandoned house at just the right moment?... How?
How did OA know what happened in the Hospital when Hap killed someone? In fact she's telling people what happened, any time she tells them anything that she wasn't there for... How does she know?
Why would a Sherrif, who had evidently dedicated yars to helping people, suddenly go against all that to help his wife?.... the only people who could help his wife would of been perfectly able to help her after they were saved and hap was arrested anyway?
Why didn't the homicidal teenage rampage killer, who had been killing people at random, shoot the dancers as soon as they stood up? Did he know they were about to have a dance off?
If they believed the 'moves' were intended to open a door to a different dimension..... Why did they think that a door to a different dimension would help whilst being shot at? Were they hoping the shooter would step through it? "Here you go Mr mass murderer, just pop on over to this dimension here with the stars and old woman.... She has a cuppa waotoing for you"

But.... My biggest bugbear, annoyance, problem.....

A kidnapper willing to kidnap and murder people, that is capable of building a huge and complex prison out of plexiglas, that's able to repeatedly sneak unconscious people in and out of planes and cars etc. With all that prep and skill they decide on NOT putting a microphone in the prison so he can hear what his prisoners are discussing... Even though he evidently can stream sound to them... Its fucking stupid.

Haha, yeah I thought this too. "Shh, he's coming, be quiet!" why didn't he just plant audio?!

This person gets it.

justkeeponsmiling · 09/01/2017 00:31

Yes, yes, yes! Scruffy has it down to a T! The ending is just bloody lazy, they obviously didn't have a clue how to finish it and just made it as vague as possible, so they could pick it up next season and spin it whichever way they decide to. Lazy, lazy writing and the ending made me CRINGE!
And re- the audio: my thoughts exactly!
I don't know why I never learn when it comes to films with/by Brit Marling. She always plays the same character and the ending is always rubbish (except Another Earth, I didn't mind that ending too much).
