Here we are. A lovely fresh thread.

Every time I watch this I'm a bit Shock that they constantly touch the food with their hands, sweat over it, don't wear a hair or beard net, yuck. Even my local Waitrose makes anyone with a beard where a net when working in the cafe and the level of hygiene required in food prep factories is huge. I don't understand how this works. Some of the chefs have been so sweaty and hairy I wouldn't want to eat their food.

fussychica · 16/12/2016 09:24

Wear not where argh!

worrierandwine · 16/12/2016 09:46

I thought the same fussychica. I also wonder if they change the chef whites they wear in cars, outside etc into fresh ones when they get in the kitchen?

fourquenelles · 16/12/2016 10:58

I admit I am not a fan of all the food touching that goes on. I also think it must make the food lose heat quickly too.

what has been puzzling me (or rather 2 things) is:
why do they not wear gloves when handling food ?
why do they always make at least 3 of their dishes ? - is there a phantom 'greg(g)' lurking because Marcus and Monica (and gregg when he is around) seem to eat off the same plate. Last night Brenton made 3 desserts (carefully placing them in the fridge) and 3 of the roly-poly purple things but only one was on his proffered plate. And on Wednesday - there were 3 of the over-large custard plates that James made for dessert.
Now either the losers eat the leftovers or there is a waste of 'fine dining' food Shock

fourquenelles · 16/12/2016 11:42

mollie good point. I found this Cosmo link

www.cosmopolitan.co.uk/entertainment/news/a43018/things-you-didnt-know-about-masterchef/

It says that filming can take hours so the food is tasted hot off camera as it's likely to be cold by the time it is formally presented.

That explains a lot - I'd always wondered how the last dish to be tasted wasn't clay cold by the time they stuck a fork in it.

QueenMortificado · 16/12/2016 13:01

I don't get this, how can they taste the dish before it is presented? Do the chefs just pretend to chew?!

fourquenelles · 16/12/2016 13:41

Reckon they must do Queen or just taste it cold and make comments based on when they tasted it hot. Cold lamb, cold jus, bluergh!

Fourque and Flappy, thank you for filling me in ( is that the phrase ? Seems wrong somehow ). Of course he's Wee Chef, and heapy-creepy as anything. At first I had him confused with Matt , taller and genuinely humble. Can Wee Chef be sous-vided in a bag with Gregg ? Well I suppose it's a bit late now.

FlappysMammyAndPopeInExile · 16/12/2016 15:28

We can but dream, Footle. We can but dream . . .

fourquenelles · 16/12/2016 15:38

Ah Queen just had a thought (dangerous I know). That's maybe why we don't get all the smokie theatrics bollocks you get on the Great British Menu. Too immediate for the filming schedule.

The possibly-not-lovely-but-might-still-be Michel Roux Jr tweeted this "Never touched tips in my life, every penny goes to staff without anything withheld. All SC goes to wages, not a penny creamed off either"

I want to believe him. His twinkly eyes seem so honest.

GrouchyKiwi · 16/12/2016 15:41

And Jay Rayner wrote a piece defending him, so I might like Jay more now.

fourquenelles · 16/12/2016 16:01

I so hope that is true Grouchy

Twinkly eyes . . . .

. . . the last refuge of the scoundrel . . . .

originalmavis · 16/12/2016 18:20

I saw him in the street and his eyes were ever so twinkly. I didn't even get to ask him for an autograph. Not because of his twinklyness but because he was walking so damn fast.

fourquenelles · 16/12/2016 19:54

Quote from Gary

"I’m getting a lot of Twitter messages with #Yoda, which I don’t mind as I’m a huge Star Wars fan and he was always the wise, little teacher".

GrouchyKiwi · 16/12/2016 20:00

Love that.

dementedma · 16/12/2016 20:12

I like wee Gary!

FlappysMammyAndPopeInExile · 17/12/2016 11:35

I like Wee Gary, too! I want him to win.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 17/12/2016 15:41

I reckon they rush a hot dish out to the judges quick, because I've seen steam coming off stuff. Yeah-Gary for the win.

squoosh · 20/12/2016 20:02

I missed last Thursday's episode and I've also just seen the Michel Roux Jr revelations. Ugh, I knew I was right not to like that man!

fourquenelles · 20/12/2016 20:05

Evening all. Gather around Yoda fans!
