Time for a new thread.

I am hoping by the end of this thread Phelan will have disappeared, Anna and family will have moved away and someone will have remembered to book a babysitter for baby Jack.

She doesn't have much awareness of other people's feelings. It always seems to be about her emotions.

GilMartin · 14/01/2017 16:54

Glad it is not just me Eddie. I felt a bit like that she felt she was the only one who was really grieving. When she was angrily berating that midwife and didn't even acknowledge the fact she'd lost a baby too or that it must have reawakened horrible feelings for Liz too.

absolutelynotfabulous · 14/01/2017 17:26

Steve and Michelle's marriage is going to unravel over this, isn't it? I agree that, after doing brilliantly, Michelle very quickly reverted back to banshee mode. I think she's a selfish, unsympathetic character too.

She didn't have an ounce of empathy for the nurse/midwife who'd also lost a preemie baby. And the grieving was all about her too.

RamonatheMisunderstood · 14/01/2017 19:41

I had a stillborn baby 11 years ago. I felt I had to watch as if Kym and Simon were brave enough to film it, I had to be brave enough to watch it. I thought it was harrowing and horrifically realistic, so much so that it took me back to a very dark place and yes, I was screaming with the pain.

Some of the things Michelle was saying/shouting/screaming were exactly the same as I did. In that state, at that time, as Liz said, youre not thinking just feeling.

I really hope theyve raised enough awareness that maybe how women are treated in hospital changes. Sadly I think theres a need for dedicated units or rooms well away from newborns.

Sorry to spill out Im feeling raw and just needed to post somewhere

Akire · 14/01/2017 19:46

Sorry about your baby Ramon, I agree was hard to see on one hand the dedicated betvement suited, things have improved there. But still in earshot of maternity and having to walk passed at the end. Surely bit more money and thinking there are ways around it.

Millimat · 14/01/2017 22:06

I thought Steve and Michelle did brilliantly. I know they want to raise awareness and I have to admit that I had no idea hospitals have a policy on not resuscitating before 24 weeks.

Millimat · 14/01/2017 22:21

And how come Kevin got that phone call after phelan changed the contact number?

Akire · 14/01/2017 22:46

Mmm Good point! Maybe the initial order sent his details to customer service to check how it's going, where as delivery be different department or just changed on main system.

eddiemairswife · 14/01/2017 23:24

I can't remember why Phelan wanted to steal Kevin's tow truck. Does he now intend to sell it, and where is it being kept?

BlackDoglet · 14/01/2017 23:39

Eddie - already sold. Andy sold it to some chap for cash, that's the cash Phelan is flashing about.

stonecircle · 15/01/2017 00:35

I wish they'd wrap up the Phelan story line now. Driving me round the bend.

I just watch for the day we finally see that smug expression wiped off Eileen's face when she FINALLY realises what he is.

JustDanceAddict · 15/01/2017 11:22

Me too stone

stonecircle · 15/01/2017 11:40

They've milked it dry - the saga with Anna, conning Jason out of his inheritance, the flat scam, leaving Michael to die, conning Eileen, getting Andy to steal for him etc etc. Surely someone other than his victims would have twigged by now 🙄

SoTheySentMeA · 15/01/2017 14:57

They did so well covering the death of Steve and Michelle's baby.

But does anyone else get the horrid feeling they're going to ruin by having Michelle turn to Robert for comfort and have it evolve into an affair? Michelle and Steve don't generally get through any hard times without one or other of them cheating to be fair. For me, it would ruin all the good work they've done on the storyline.

I see what you're saying about Michelle going into banshee mode but to be honest it's a horrible shock to find out that you're baby can't have a birth or death certificate, as if they can never existed and some people do react angrily to that.

I cant believe the lack of empathy from Liz - if someone had put all my babies things in a black sack rather than let me sort it in my own time, I'd go completely fucking mental. How on earth could they have thought that was the right thing to do?? Did they not even think to ask what she wanted?

Disclaimer: I don't generally find Michelle a sympathetic character but on this one I can see her point of view.

SoTheySentMeA · 15/01/2017 16:40

I really like that they've got people talking about it, which was the whole point. Just looking at the comments on the online articles - there's like this outpouring of empathy and people's stories. I learned about the 24 week rule the hard way, Mine was 23+4. She didn't breathe and therefore according to the "rules", she didn't exist.

SO sick of the Phelan storyline. Its utter utter crap. Cannot bear his smug face anymore. Probably wouldn't mind the acting if the character was a bit less two-dimensional. Bog standard "baddie" with no redeeming qualities doing the same shit to different people over and over again. Bit like Tracey. But what really annoys me is how Eileen has turned from being strong willed, no-nonsense, funny and rather pessimistic, to this needy, lovesick, simpering idiot who won't believe a bad word about "her man". I do know that some people can have a bit of a personality transplant when they fall in love but this is super irritating to watch. I miss the old days of her, Steve and Lloyd cracking jokes in the cab office.

SoTheySentMeA · 15/01/2017 16:41

Why do my posts always get so long?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 15/01/2017 18:00

Flowers SoThey - sorry for your loss.

I thought the under 24 weeks thing was common knowledge (I actually thought it was 25 weeks though) because my midwife was very clear that you don't get a MATB1 until the baby is "viable" (her words). Maybe I just got a very frank midwife.

Michelle & Steve have always been very unrealistic as a couple. After dumping her for Becky she would never have had him back. The whole reconciliation plot was laughable.

What Coronation Street lacks is the acid-tongued older woman like Blanche or Roy's Mum. One of the funniest scenes was when Blanche went with Ken and Deirdre to Peter's AA meeting.
Too much attention is now given to the bed-hopping antics of various cast members, many of whom seem to be continuously on heat.

Millimat · 15/01/2017 22:02

sothey Flowers
I can't imagine what people feel going through that.
I agree - Liz would not have done that with the bin bags. No mention of her miscarriage yet?

GilMartin · 16/01/2017 00:09

Eddie god I miss Blanche! My favourite moment was when Ken was expecting some existential angst and hadn't shaved for a few days.

Blanche described him as looking like a demented Kenny Rodgers.

Housewife2010 · 16/01/2017 06:57

Norris can have an acid tongue sometimes. My favourite exchange was in the Rovers when Liz told someone that they "catered for an international clientele." "Polish builders don't count" retorted Norris.

GilMartin · 16/01/2017 07:21

Liz would not have done that with the bin bags. No mention of her miscarriage yet?

According to Corriepedia Liz's baby, Katie, was born and lived for two days - 1-3rd January 1992 ( so nearly 25 years to the day Steve and Michelle's baby was stillborn).

In clearing out the stuff I wonder if Liz was acting based on her own feelings at the time of her own loss and not fully appreciating that Michelle might feel differently.

stonecircle · 16/01/2017 08:20

I think they do the relationship between Norris and Mary very well. Really moving when he didn't want her to go to South Africa but didn't want to stop her.

But the South Africa story line was very weird. Who invites someone they don't know to come and live with them for good, even if they are their long lost birth mum? AND why on earth was she asked to make a permanent move?! Surely you'd go for a holiday to see what everyone thought before making it permanent?!!!

GilMartin · 16/01/2017 08:27

I love Liz, I loved Bet Lynch and although I'm too young to remember Elsie Tanner, all those other strong female characters in Corrie who refuse to fade into the background in middle age.

absolutelynotfabulous · 16/01/2017 09:53

There were so many strong female characters at the beginning....Elsie Tanner, Ena Sharples then Annie Walker, Bet Lynch, Hilda, Blanche....

There was a lot of biting, Northern, uncompromising wit which seems to be absent now. The characters are unsympathetic, one dimensional but also quite mean. But not funny, or witty.

Maybe our times are too sanitary now for that sort of vicious humour.
