Can't wait!!

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 17/10/2016 11:35

Dapplegrey, there were East German spies all over West Germany. There's a very good book called 'Stasiland' by Anna Funder if you're interested, it's very readable and full of stories from behind - and from the other side of - the Wall. It's a great intro into that time.

Marbleheadjohnson · 17/10/2016 12:31

Yesss, I loved 83
2018 is too far away!

T0ldmywrath · 17/10/2016 13:09

Hurrah! I voted for Deutschland 83 in the NTA last week.

JasperDamerel · 17/10/2016 13:13

Hurrah! I watched that and followed it with The Night Manager and am now unable to watch TV because nothing else is anywhere near as good.

Dapplegrey1 · 17/10/2016 13:44

Beauty - thank you.
I read Stasiland ages ago but I've got it on my kindle and I'm going to reread it. I've also downloaded "Red Love, the story of an East German family" "The People's State" by Mary Fulbrook and "The Berlin Wall my part in its downfall" by Peter Millar so soon I'll be au fait with all the background of Deutschland 83 and 86.
I'm looking forward to reading how these spies remained in high ranking positions in government and the army, and for all I know, other institutions.
It's a fascinating subject and I wish I'd gone to the GDR before the wall came down.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 17/10/2016 14:27

The Peter Millar one is good. There's 'The File' by Timothy Garton Ash, and one called 'The Stasi Files' but I can't remember who the author is. I need to pick up the ones you've suggested - the history of the GDR is a massive interest of mine. We should do a book swap Smile

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 17/10/2016 14:30

Oh, and definitely read 'Man Without A Face: The Autobiography of Communism's Greatest Spymaster', by Markus Wolf. Anna Funder talks about him in 'Stasiland' - he was the head of the HVA spy organisation, based in the West.

Dapplegrey1 · 17/10/2016 14:39

Beauty, thank you for that - I'll get the Timothey Garton Ash.
I can't find the Markus Wolf on kindle or Amazon books. Do your u thknow no it's only available in German?

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 17/10/2016 14:43

Markus Wolf autobiography

Here you go Smile

Dapplegrey1 · 17/10/2016 16:55

Beauty - thank you so much!
I've ordered it and I'm very much looking forward to reading it.
Such a riveting subject and all so recent.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 17/10/2016 19:24

Dapple, it's a pleasure Smile I don't know many other people who are as fascinated by it as I am, so I tend to get excited when I come across someone who is!

Dapplegrey1 · 17/10/2016 20:58

Beauty - have you been to Berlin? I'm keen to go and do a Trabi Safari, in which you are driven round the city in a Trabant and are shown landmarks from the former GDR - those that are still standing. - and taken on a tour of the former Stasi prison (which features in Deutschland 83).
I'm going to work on DH.......

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 18/10/2016 12:44

I have, I spent a lot of time out there in my early 20s - a lot of my friends there are from the old East. Visiting Hohenschoenhausen prison was an experience, you can begin to imagine how awful it was for the inmates. It's a wonderful city, the difference between the two sides is still noticeable, but it's growing and evolving constantly.

Dapplegrey · 26/01/2019 16:32

Anyone watching Deutschland 86?

Piggywaspushed · 26/01/2019 17:53

I actually can't seem to find it on Amazon. Apparently it will be on C4 soon so am prepared to wait!

Dapplegrey · 26/01/2019 19:15

Sorry Piggy, my post should read ‘Will anyone be watching Deutschland 86?’

I don't think it’s available with English sub titles yet but I’m really looking forward to it. Apparently a lot of it takes place in Africa but I hope there’s still plenty of East Germany as I found it fascinating.

Piggywaspushed · 26/01/2019 19:28

I am excited. Africa???

Dapplegrey · 26/01/2019 20:55

Apparently so! South Africa, Angola, Libya.......
Can’t wait.
I’m looking forward to seeing more of Alexander Beyer who, as well as the films mentioned upthread, was in ‘The Legend of Rita’ which I would recommend to anyone who enjoys films set in the former GDR.

Dapplegrey · 24/02/2019 21:02

First episode of Deutschland 86 airs in UK on March 8th!!
Excellent news.

HoraceCope · 26/02/2019 06:17

Fab Grin so glad I saw this thread. Loved this first series.

Dapplegrey · 09/03/2019 18:24

HoraceCope · 09/03/2019 20:50
