Like it or not, vogue influences everything you wear!
Remember that bit in devil wears Prada where anne Hathaway sneer at the colour discussion, and gets a dressing down from meryl Streep basically saying how her Aqua colour jumper is only that because of catwalk etc
Well it's like that in real life!

southeastdweller · 11/09/2016 10:02

I don't think the Condé Nast meeting had been set-up. Nicholas Coleridge has been in publishing for long enough to instantly know a shit cover from a good one and to know how many flag covers on other C.N mags have sold badly over the years. But yes, Alexandra did look smug.

mumonahottinroof · 11/09/2016 18:09

I don't get the 'does the cover matter to anyone outside the industry?' question

Of course it doesn't matter hugely, just as in a documentary about a pop group it wouldn't matter to anyone outside the music industry if their record sold well or badly. Or a documentary about a fish processing factory if for some reason they couldn't flog their cod. But it matters to the employees because their jobs would be on the line and that has an effect on the wider economy.

But this is a documentary about a magazine and to the employees of that magazine the cover is VERY important. All the stats show that an appealing cover sells stacks more than a crap one. Why Jaime appeared not to know this is beyond me - the focus groups made it clear which cover they preferred and as NC said flags never sell well. It was a no-brainer.

mumonahottinroof · 11/09/2016 18:12

stopmakingmelogon but yes, you're right all print media has lost much of its frivolousness, because it's in its death throes. A lot has dumbed down in a desperate attempt to hang in there. I actually think Vogue has done a brilliant job at staying reasonably upmarket but the cover decision is vital - if someone thinks 'Crap cover I won't buy it this month", then they may lose the habit for good.

StopMakingMeLogOn · 11/09/2016 18:35

Fair enough mum. For me the articles described on the cover is more important than the picture but maybe I'm odd. I find the pictires all blur for me and don't stand out. I would have been more inclined to remember the KM flag cover than the admittedly more glossy one they went with.

MarshaBrady · 11/09/2016 18:44

Alexandra S was right about the cover, the flag one wasn't as attractive.

She may not be high fashion like Paris and NY editors, but it's probably her ability to be the one that steers to the right commercial decisions that means she's good as the editor.

The others, the blonde, were egged on by the dipsy commentator. Why don't you say something, do you ever stand up for what you think etc. She felt that by not speaking up she wasn't backing her work and then it will fall flat in a room with the publishers.

It was a great doco, not flashy but really showed the tensions in a creative place where it's all about opinions - which in this case can be backed up by sales.

Bookishandblondish · 11/09/2016 20:52

So is the reason they did/ were forced to do the documentary was due to the launch of Style.com - Conde Nast's £75m investment into online retail which has just been attacked by the Sunday Times ( no big names like Gucci signed up for example)

Bookishandblondish · 11/09/2016 20:53

And that is horrifically badly written - sorry.

MarshaBrady · 11/09/2016 21:29

No idea Bookish, had not heard of Style.com - or it feels familiar but not as an online shop.

It's hard to create an online site that has the draw of NAP or Matches, takes a lot and not sure they've got it. Some of the items on mannequins rather than models doesn't help, esp at £800+

ppeatfruit · 11/09/2016 21:37

I enjoyed it. I liked the understatedness of the presenter\interviewer. I thought the union jack cover looked cheap and nasty. KM is so overused and finished.

The fashion industry was cut throat when I worked in it in the late 70s and there's no reason to think that it has changed at all.

They still employ models who look like tall skinny ghosts. With all the uproar that there has been about the need for models to look 'normal' and be more positive role models for young girls, they could 've changed that.

mumonahottinroof · 12/09/2016 12:11

style.com would've been one reason, people've been trying to do a documentary for literally 15 years, Coleridge keen as it boosts the profile, Shulman not.
ST would have attacked style.com as it is a direct rival.

Queenbean · 12/09/2016 14:10

When is the second part on?

southeastdweller · 12/09/2016 15:00

Thursday.

EachandEveryone · 12/09/2016 15:08

So, the movements that Kate was doing whilst been shot is that what professional models do. Like she had a tick or something. She sounds exactly like Jo Wood when she speaks.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 12/09/2016 15:10

She obviously knows which poses work and that adjusting your head up or down by 1cm can make all the difference. It did look strange to watch her do it though.

Queenbean · 12/09/2016 15:12

Thanks South

ElspethFlashman · 12/09/2016 15:20

I've seen documentaries with models posing before. I actually saw one with Kate Moss some years ago though god knows what was the subject.

Anyway, it's bloody wierd. All these micro movements. Like a puppet that's trying to wake up. It looks very uncomfortable. And boring!

EachandEveryone · 12/09/2016 17:51

Yes u dont see them doing that on next top model do you?

squoosh · 12/09/2016 17:52

She's been at this game for so long she knows exactly what needs to be done without prompting. Must make the photographer's life very easy!

megletthesecond · 15/09/2016 21:03

Couture week ♡

Queenbean · 15/09/2016 21:10

What a ghastly world

Queenbean · 15/09/2016 21:45

I just realised that I know one of the women on this show!

podmax · 15/09/2016 21:58

Oh god the presenter is SO annoying.

southeastdweller · 15/09/2016 22:24

Not as good as the first episode.
