Did anyone else watch the one-off Goodnight Sweetheart last night? I had literally no idea they were doing a re-make and then saw it billed up after Eastenders. I loved it and I want another series now. Its sort of like a corny British version of Back to the future I guess ha.

Was David Bowie known in 1962?
Gary mentions him to passers by when he's checking the wall at the start of the episode.

I thought that it was superb and I'm pleased to read that it's been recommissioned - yaaaay!

Would prefer Dervla Kirwen as Phoebe if she were available. Elizabeth Carling seemed a bit awkward and wooden.

Agree about Reg not having aged!

The contrast between 2016 and 1999 adds a new, interesting dynamic and was handled brilliantly.

I'm wondering whether Phoebe wll start to get suspicious of all the things that feel/sound familiar despite supposedly being brand new things - tights, for example, or the M25. And the Beatles' songs of course.

Where did you hear it has been recommissioned? Shock Digetic

Yeah i didn't understand the David Bowie quip either as he did release any songs until the late 60's. Another writer right i guess to include a 2016 new story a bit like the EU unity quip.

I bloody loved it. Really made me laugh. I am borderline obsessed with the original series, so was looking forward to it. It did not disappoint. I thought it was a series not a one off, so that's sad.

Oops

The young hyacinth however was terrible. The actress was amazing and had all the mannerisms, but the writing was appalling.

Loved it, roared quite a bit. I hope it will be a new series. Loved Reg doing Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick!

ItsABanana · 04/09/2016 23:56

I've always loved this series, so had to watch this new episode!
I was a bit apprehensive about watching it at first, as remakes are usually crap.
Pleased to say though that it was absolutely brilliant!
I thought it picked up perfectly from where it left off. The fact he now has a daughter in the future and he's discovering modern life and being baffled by it surely gives so much scope for more episodes!
Really hope they do another series.. they can't just leave it there! Smile

I watched this new episode & really enjoyed it but must have missed the bit where they explained about Gary writing the Beatles songs. Can someone enlighten me, please?

Jasonandyawegunorts · 05/09/2016 15:52

In the original series Gary used to claim to be a song writer, and at one point actually performed in a vaudeville act. The songs were mostly from The beatles and my fair lady, But being the 1940's nobody knew this.

Now it's the 60's and people are hearing the beatles songs on the radio as written by Lennon / Mccartney, so the only explaination is that they stole them from Gary's wartime repertoire.

It'll be intresting to know what happened to the poor sod who wrote the song Gary plagiarized to publish and have the royalites in Michael's name.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 05/09/2016 15:53

George Formby was very intrested in When i'm 64. Grin

celeste83 · 05/09/2016 16:28

Gary went to Liverpool in one episode to meet Ron's grandfather and went into a pub and played Penny Lane on a piano and it went down like a lead ballon. The barman remarked to a Mr Lennon in the bar that his son could write a better song Grin

That's the episode where he changes the future and Ron turns into a vicar isn't it?

susiella · 06/09/2016 10:28

Thanks Jason

BBC announced this week they will not be commisioning a new series but the report i read said that another tv network could take it on. ITV did steal Birds of a Feather off the BBC so hopefully they will do the same with Goodnight Sweetheart.
