Did anyone else watch the one-off Goodnight Sweetheart last night? I had literally no idea they were doing a re-make and then saw it billed up after Eastenders. I loved it and I want another series now. Its sort of like a corny British version of Back to the future I guess ha.

I thought this was the best of the bunch by a long way. It was like a creamy mug of hot chocolate.
Yes he's a nasty piece of work having two families but its so fun. Loved that Yvonne was now a dragon.

There were a couple of bits that didn't make sense though (or maybe I missed them)
When Gary was transported to 2016 where did baby Gary go?
Then when he returned to 1962 he locked himself in the cubicle didn't he? Then when he came back through 10 secs later that man was on the loo (although that did make me laugh)

Jasonandyawegunorts · 03/09/2016 18:37

i was expectign this to be terrible... but it wasn't, it was great.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 03/09/2016 18:38

When Gary was transported to 2016 where did baby Gary go?

Presumably dropped on the floor.... ALA the gag.

mogloveseggs · 03/09/2016 18:43

Loved it! Really hope they bring it back properly.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 03/09/2016 18:44

how does that work without Ronnie Baker then?

Kevin Bishop plays his son.... who happens to be in prision it was terrible.

It would have been better to have David Jason in a prequal to porridge about the old man character Blanco. Wasn't Blanco accused of murdering his wife but really he murdered her lover?

Lightbulbon · 03/09/2016 18:56

Seeing it through a feminist gaze now- he's a swine!

JudyCoolibar · 03/09/2016 18:59

I don't see how a prequel of Porridge could possibly work without Fletcher. And frankly, I'm delighted they kept David Jason well away from it, I find him quite irritating.

PseudoBadger · 03/09/2016 19:01

I really liked it which surprised me, it was quite a clever obeservation of modern life!

Jasonandyawegunorts · 03/09/2016 19:04

Reg looks exactly the same.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it would fail either way. but at least it would have at least some connection to the original.

Pemba · 03/09/2016 19:10

I really liked it too, and I didn't even see the original show! I was aware of it, though. Hope they make a series. But didn't it used to be an ITV show, or did I get that wrong?

Yes it was by far the best of these revived comedies they've had on recently. Most of them had no laughs at all, although there was some good acting. The girl who played 'Young Hyacinth' was channelling Patricia Routledge beautifully! But the script just wasn't funny.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 03/09/2016 19:12

I thought that, but Wikipedia says otherwise, althought it's been repeated on ITV so maybe that's where we are getting it from?

PseudoBadger · 03/09/2016 19:14

I'm sure it was a BBC show. Then repeated ad infinitum on Gold.

Oh yeah! Sometimes I worry about myself Grin

woodhill · 03/09/2016 19:37

The scenery in Hyacinth's was the Rickmansworth canal so I enjoyed watching it.

I didn't think of her being a maid.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 03/09/2016 19:39

I thought the casting was good, The girl who plays Elle looks like
Yvonne and the guy playing Gary's dad looked like him.

Pemba · 03/09/2016 19:41

The actress who played the daughter is the Yvonne actress's daughter in real life, apparently.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 03/09/2016 19:42

Well that would explain the good casting.

celeste83 · 03/09/2016 19:54

Also when he left 1962 it was a hospital and walked out of a bar in 2016, then when he went back from the bar he arrived in the usual street in 1962 where he used to time travel not the hospital. And where did the dog go? I think with a storyline of this time travelling concept there has to be a few inregularities. It was defo a BBC show originally too.

I was expecting this to be awful but really enjoyed it. Seems I'm alone here but I enjoyed the young Hyacinth one too. I thought she got some of her mannerisms and her voice down really well.

Tiggeryoubastard · 04/09/2016 00:24

The Yvonne actress was genius. She swayed from bitch to hurt to bitch to hopeful to bitch to exhausted mother. I felt every emotion with her. Frankly that was Oscar worthy.

celeste83 · 04/09/2016 00:29

I'm glad they used this Yvonne. They used to have another actress play her when it first started but i think the second one was better. On the otherhand Dervia Kirwin used to play Phoebe and she was a better actress than the second lady who played her.

ShelaghTurner · 04/09/2016 08:29

Michelle Holmes played Yvonne originally and I much preferred her at the time. Emma Amos didn't seem to settle in. This ep though she did a fab job.

And yes preferred Dervla too but Liz Carling will do. (I was totally obsessed with this show originally Blush)

celeste83 · 04/09/2016 10:50

They seemed to change Yvonne's character when Emma Amos came in. She went from housewife to a career driven confident woman who was cosy with the Blairs and New Labour. i thought Emma Amos brought more out of the character.
