One week to go. Anyone else can't wait?
I've just started to rewatch the first series. Not sure if I'll get to watch it all again before next Sunday though.

The part with the children wasn't in the first series, but it's in the book. I thought the scene was rushed and badly done though. Debbie Horsfield is just making stuff up now. Elizabeth visiting George and him propositioning her? Tosh.

beguilingeyes · 26/09/2016 07:02

emotionsecho, I'd recommend having another go at the old series two. I love it very much and it's got Drake and Morwenna, two of my favourite characters.

ooonatoffolo · 26/09/2016 09:42

Hmm.

Demelza is 'just' telling Ross she is pg and then she has had the baby!

The whole scene with Elizabeth visiting George alone (really?) and him propositioning her - was that in the original books?

I luffs Verity. And the Dr.

Don't like Caroline character/actress.

Luffs it when Ross - sorry - Mr Pole-DAAAARK - stops being so ruddy earnest and grins. Heart melting.

murphys · 26/09/2016 09:59

I am not placemarking at all.....Wink

Season 2 is only being released here in SA in a few weeks, but I couldn't help it and downloaded the first 3 episodes. 4th in available from tonight, so I am going to assume its on your telly tonight?

I did stop after episode 2 last night, so hopefully can watch next two tonight. Then I am going to have to wait a whole week again like everyone else....

emotionsecho · 26/09/2016 10:53

beguilingeyes I might try to do that, I can remember some good parts of it but the overwhelming memory is that Christopher Biggins character and how utterly revolting he was. I seem to remember being a bit disappointed in it overall - the old series two syndromeGrin.

I'm not sure about the Caroline Penvenen character some of what she said to Dr Ennis about the poor was awful and you were a bit unsure as to whether she actually meant it or was teasing him, the original Caroline was easier to read, however, as she did supply the oranges you have to believe she is not the evil rich heiress her words implied.

This episode was a bit bitty, once again a lot happened but overall I thought it was good and did enjoy it.

beguilingeyes · 26/09/2016 11:01

The bit with Elizabeth visiting George is not in the books. Nor is the bit with her arranging a meeting with George before the trial. Elizabeth was a married gentlewoman, she wouldn't have been swanning around the country on her own meeting men. It's ludicrous. They also make Cornwall look like a tiny village that they all bump into all the time.

emotionsecho · 26/09/2016 11:10

I agree beguilingeyes there is no way Elizabeth would have visited George alone it just wasn't done and then there is the issue of her going behind Francis' back to meet him, someone as well brought up as Elizabeth just wouldn't contemplate that.

ShelaghTurner · 26/09/2016 11:13

Caroline is largely a product of her Uncle Ray upbringing. But she has more fellow feeling than that underneath. That whole speech yesterday was her testing Dwight, finding out about him, what drives him and in doing so it brings out her more compassionate side. At least that's how I've always read that scene.

But last night she just came across as completely insufferable and irritating. I know, I'm like a broken record...

emotionsecho · 26/09/2016 11:19

I think the actress who plays Caroline needs to put more nuance into her lines and facial expressions.

HarrietOliver · 26/09/2016 12:10

Although I've enjoyed all four episodes so far, I'm hoping it'll gear up a bit from now on. Having read all the books, I found Jeremy Poldark by far the least exciting. The next episode should have moved on to book four, Warleggan, in which a whole lot of stuff happens. No spoilers, obviously, but I just wonder whether the portrayals of Elizabeth and Caroline, which have been subject to quite a lot of criticism, might make more sense as the plot develops throughout the series. My biggest worry is that the writing is going to make Ross a bit too P.C., for fear of turning people off the character. For that reason, I thought the 'sleazy' scene with Elizabeth in episode three was good, if a bit rushed. He was certainly drunk, having been at Trenwith knocking it back for hours, and was probably reminded of a past, simpler time, when his father was alive, he and Elizabeth were together and he wasn't humiliated by debt.

At the BFI Premiere, Debbie Horsfield said that Series Three will only be covering one and a half books, so possibly that'll allow more time for plot/character development.

Minor carping aside, it's still great to watch, and a definite positive for gloomy Sunday evenings.

99littleducks · 26/09/2016 22:02

Yes, I agree with previous posters that this episode was a bit choppy. Trying to get too many plots into one hour. But I still enjoyed it Smile

I love the scenic bits, I've never been to Cornwall but it's making me really want to! Also, I'm glad Demelza has found her fire again, although we didn't see much of her.
They did seem to milk the whole "family reunited" theme, quite the bromance going on there between Ross and Francis, and even Captain Blaney at the end.

So true about when Ross smiles, his whole face lights up Grin

diddl · 28/09/2016 17:45

Ross isn't really a nice character though, is he?

What's the feud with him & Warleggan about?

beguilingeyes · 28/09/2016 18:03

They've never got on, since school. There's an element of snobbery in it. Ross thinks George is an upstart and George just wants power and position and doesn't care how he gets it. They're also in love with the same woman.

snozzlemaid · 28/09/2016 18:07

George is just out to make money and doesn't care who he ruins to do this. This is against all that Ross believes in. Ross will always do his best to help people less fortunate than himself.

OP posts:
diddl · 28/09/2016 18:11

Yes I thought that I had seen it hinted at that Ross thinks that he is superior to George because he is a Poldark.

Obviously having money doesn't automatically make you a good person-but neither does a "good name"!

ShelaghTurner · 28/09/2016 18:18

George is very very conscious of his roots (and his family show him up!). Ross is everything he isn't - a gentleman - and so casually so that it infuriates George. Ross plays fast and loose with everything that George would wish to be. And he has the people on side which George will never have. George quickly realised that his reign is one of fear not respect and so he is happy to tread that path if it gets him what he wants, and it generally does. So he's at war with the Poldarks and they clash over Elizabeth, particularly as he knows that Elizabeth would drop any other husband like a hot rock if Ross came calling.

bassetfeet · 28/09/2016 18:38

The beauty of Winston Graham books is the perfect historical research for its time and how he made all the people so real with imperfections and human feelings . You can empathise, get mad and understand why the characters did what they did .

Sunnymeg · 01/10/2016 18:12

Does anyone else think that the way this series is going, with everyone resolving their differences and making friends, that George will be throwing a slap up meal for Aunt Agatha's birthday Grin

ShelaghTurner · 01/10/2016 20:19

Grin with Ross as guest of honour?

Sunnymeg · 01/10/2016 20:52

Of course!

woodhill · 02/10/2016 21:55

Awful, can't bear it, remember it last time round

squoosh · 02/10/2016 21:57
Sad

Had grown to like him in the end.

Warleggan will be licking his lips.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 02/10/2016 22:10

Oh ffs. Poor old Francis. He'd just come good and now this.

ooonatoffolo · 02/10/2016 22:16

Sad Francis! Sad

giantcar · 02/10/2016 22:30

Poor Francis! :( it's awful

I really felt for Demelza, looks like things are going to get difficult for her with Elizabeth single again
