One week to go. Anyone else can't wait?
I've just started to rewatch the first series. Not sure if I'll get to watch it all again before next Sunday though.

That is true! She is such a brilliant writer, loved the reboot of Upstairs, Downstairs she did, far superior to the contrived, historical inaccuracies of downtown abby, which was just a ripoff of Up/ Down anyway, (can you tell I couldn't stand it?, except Dame Maggie). Pity BBC didn't give their Up/ Down a third series, great stories & acting!

CoolCarrie · 22/09/2016 09:33

Another lovely series was Home Fires , very sad itv cancelled it and on a cliff hanger too, bastards!

TheHiphopopotamus · 22/09/2016 09:49

I loved the reboot of Upstairs/Downstairs! And I loathed Downton (especially Lady Mary). It was absolute tosh. Couldn't stand the way they were made out to be one big happy family, including the servants. And the servants never seemed to do any work, they all just sat in the kitchen drinking tea. Hardly an accurate representation of the times.

TheHiphopopotamus · 22/09/2016 09:51

I also loved The Crimson Field which was also cancelled by BBC. It would seem my liking something is the kiss of death.

ShelaghTurner · 22/09/2016 10:06

Never watched Downton but loved Home fires. When you see the crazy shite they put on the rest of the time I can't understand why itv cancelled such a wonderful show.

CoolCarrie · 22/09/2016 16:54

There is a petition about Home Fires on facebook I think. Even a xmas special wouldbe something at least, but the problem would be getting the actors, locations & production crew together again. Another good show that left us hanging was Kingdom with Stephen Fry & Celia Imrie, we enjoyed that & i had a weecrush on Lyle! ☺️😉

myfavouritecolourispurple · 23/09/2016 11:33

The other thing that Heidi Thomas did that was great was Lilies. It was also cancelled after one series, and as people have said, compared with the rubbish that the BBC shows otherwise...

I saw the first series of Poldark but I was very young when it was on the first time, it was repeated when I was about 15. I think it was better in some ways but soooo melodramatic. It felt very like it was in a theatre.

ShelaghTurner · 23/09/2016 11:39

That's what I liked about it. It felt like you were sitting in the front row. I prefer that to the gloss and polish of today's productions, part of the reason I didn't watch Downton.

TheHiphopopotamus · 23/09/2016 11:45

Agreed. I think sometimes too much goes on the 'look' rather than the content. At the moment Poldark looks stunning but the depth is missing.

emotionsecho · 23/09/2016 16:50

I disagree that the original series was overly melodramatic, I think overall it's stood the test of time very well even if some of the plots/events were a bit drawn out. Most of the actors in the original series were, as was common for that time, stage actors so they may have come across as more 'theatrical'.

The original series put a lot more depth into the characters, their motivations and reasons for doing what they did. I've mentioned it before but in the original series when Francis attempted suicide you knew how he'd got to that point, you'd seen and felt his fall into despair at what he and his life had become and what he'd done and why, you can hear the sheer pain in his voice when he says to Dr. Ennis "They are saying that I've betrayed Cornwall" but in this series his attempted suicide was just a 'blink and you'd miss it' moment and as a viewer who had not seen the original series or read the books you are none the wiser as to how and why he reached that point.

This second series of this version is disappointing, I can understand why they chose to cram a number of events into the first series, they were unsure of how it would be received or whether it would be a success but once it was they could, and should, have put more emphasis on plot and character in this one, slowed it down and maybe used the time spent in each episode on views of Cornwall on the story arc and the characters within it instead.

Destinysdaughter · 24/09/2016 10:58

Can you watch the original Poldark anywhere does anyone know?

TheHiphopopotamus · 24/09/2016 11:35

destiny I think it's on youtube. Haven't watched it though, so don't know what the quality is like.

ShelaghTurner · 24/09/2016 11:56

It's on YouTube...dubbed in Spanish!

beguilingeyes · 24/09/2016 12:55

Buy the dvds, you won't regret it. I agree that the new one is style over substance. Everything is about Ross, so Demelza is a wimp and the other characters are just plot devices to move Ross around. People like Jim and Jinny, Mark and Keren are not given enough time for us to get to know them so it's hard to care what happens to them. Eleanor's Demelza has none of the character's charm and spiky wit.

It also makes me laugh that all of their conversation happens on the cliff top. 'i want to talk to you Ross' 'Hang on love, we need too go to the beach'.

TheHiphopopotamus · 24/09/2016 13:07

It's on YouTube...dubbed in Spanish!

Haha, really? I haven't watched it, it's just popped up occasionally based on other stuff I've watched.

diddl · 24/09/2016 19:43

"The actor in this series is just too refined and pretty looking to portray this struggle "

He'll always be Freddie Threepwood to me!

Destinysdaughter · 25/09/2016 17:39

But he's just soooo pretty to look at!

< shallow > Blush

Dulra · 25/09/2016 22:00

Loved this episode Smile

MaQueen · 25/09/2016 22:06

I found it a bit dull...and he didn't take his shirt off, once [more shallow]

Destinysdaughter · 25/09/2016 22:07

I fell asleep! 💤

emotionsecho · 25/09/2016 22:47

I quite enjoyed this episode.

Although I was a bit confused about Captain Blamey's children they weren't in the original first series (I don't remember much about the second series apart from the revolting Christopher Biggins character as I only watched it once) and it's a fair while since I read the books anyone whose read the books recently care to update me?

MaQueen · 25/09/2016 22:49

I felt it was too bitty...chopping and changing from scene to scene, too much.

TheHiphopopotamus · 25/09/2016 23:04

Agree about it being bitty. Too many story lines crammed into this ep. Demelza has just told Ross she's pregnant, now she's had the baby. At least she seemed to get some of her spark back this ep.

I don't know where they're going with Elizabeth's character. She's coming across as far too nice. Also don't know what to think about Caroline. She appears to be a brain free bimbo. Quite like th Dr though.

MaQueen · 25/09/2016 23:16

Yep, it's jumping around far too much, there's no rhythm or pace to it. It looks utterly beautiful, of course, but just too eclectic.

ShelaghTurner · 26/09/2016 01:57

I was so pissed off about Caroline that I turned off halfway through. I'll watch the rest tomorrow.
