TENNIS THREAD!- From the Road to Rio, to Flushing Meadows...

Raahh · 09/08/2016 23:14

before my phone decides to give up altogether, here's a new thread to get us on our way.

Andy Murray still in the Olympic Singles, as is Rafa,

Jo Konta through for the women.

Lots of missing names from the top players- but we are edging towards the US open- without Federer- and who knows, maybe even without Djokovic.

Could we be heading for all change at the top?

Poor Delpo. But he's still a silver medallist. I hope tomorrow he will realise what he's achieved.

But Andy, super Andy, two gold medals in a row. Ans another gold for us. I'm so happy GrinGrinGrin

Fiderer · 15/08/2016 01:12

Wow - that was a match. I didn't know Del Potro till this match but oh. Golly. That thigh massage

Wish he'd won tbh. He was so close and so good.

Fiderer · 15/08/2016 01:17

Think it's a good thing I don't bet. I always feel sorry for the loser. There was some poor soul at the back of the marathon, heartbreaking.

BeJayKayven · 15/08/2016 01:21

Aye, so close but no cigar 🙄

Brilliant for Andy and British tennis!

AmIthatbloodycold · 15/08/2016 01:43

So commentator had just said that today was the most successful day yet for TEAM GB. Second in the medal table

So pleased that the GB flag bearer and all round good guy has contributed to the gold medal tally

Proud to be British tonightGrin

Raahh · 15/08/2016 01:45

I am gutted that Delpo lostSad, he has come back after such a long time, it would have been great for him to win. He has gone one better than the last Olympics, at least. Sorry, I know I'm no Murray fan, but half the top players were missing, so it wasn't much of a win for me. And he made heavy work of matches that should have been easy.

Cincy starts tomorrow (today?) - and I'm looking forward to the US open.

i suppose the Olympics are good preparation for staying up to watch the action at Flushing meadows!

AmIthatbloodycold · 15/08/2016 01:53

Indeed Trixy. I don't know of any other Olympic sport where this would happen Confused Except in the Daily Mail of course. GrinGrinGrin

I'm still buzzing. Looking forward to the Davis Cup match next month. What a rematch that will be

I can't wait

BeJayKayven · 15/08/2016 02:13

Oh Raahh that's ungracious to say the least 😦

Raahh · 15/08/2016 02:31

Be- this is the tennis thread, not the Olympics thread. I watch/ follow every tennis event. I'm not a Murray fan, people on here know that, - would be boring if everyone was a fan of the same player. i don't see how it's ungracious- I've said many times on this thread and others, that i feel uncomfortable with tennis being at the Olymoics. Especially with half the main competitors missing. Bit like the 100 metres, without Usain Bolt.

AmIthatbloodycold · 15/08/2016 08:55

I've just watched highlights of that final and have to say it was fantastic

That last set was brilliant. It's been a great Olympics for tennis, that hasn't suffered for the absence of some of the top ten.

Lots of close matches, a fantastic gold for GB, and three very, very worthy medalists.

I love tennis 😄

BeJayKayven · 15/08/2016 11:49

I'm aware what thread it is thanks. Either way you were ungracious.

CremeEggThief · 15/08/2016 12:21

I don't think Raah was ungracious. She was very disappointed for Del Potro and she's right to point out the field was depleted, with no Federer and Djokovic losing so early.
Fair play to Andy Murray; he was marginally the better player last night. They both played an excellent match.

BeJayKayven · 15/08/2016 12:30

Yes, I think either would have been worthy winners.

JaneJeffer · 15/08/2016 13:13

Well done Andy and well done for this too!
Inverdale strikes again Hmm

AmIthatbloodycold · 15/08/2016 14:33

A typical Andy response too Grin

CremeEggThief · 15/08/2016 14:37

It's good to see he obviously holds Inverdale in the high regard we all do! Wink

BeckerLleytonNever · 15/08/2016 16:27

In the end, at the beginning of the 4th set (had to saty up as there was a drunken brawl going on outside and no way could I go to bed then!) I was willing Delpo for the gold.

Traitor I know, Team GB and all that, but Delpo was soooooooooooooooooo deserving of it and gave his all and more.

congrats to Andy though, and im was crying with both of them and Leon too!

BTW when Delpo was having that thigh massage, even though it was sore for him, I thought of all of you pervs lot, wishing literally and physically you were that trainer! Grin. me too.

Nishikoris a good looking chap isn't he? looked very clean and tidy- obv the other 2 had just come off court.

will miss it all now till US open.

unless anyone kn ows if they'll show anything on eurosport?

Raahh · 15/08/2016 20:56

I am totally exhausted today, and really, really need an early night. It is dd1's birthday tomorrow, she's 10. Even if she stays in bed, her overexcited 5 year old sister will be up early and buzzing. Everything she has is football related. I have just been blowing up inflatable footballs and feel light headed.Football
I have failed miserably to make any of my 3 tennis fans.Sad Mind you, as we we said during Wimbledon (or was it Rg??) seeing what the parents go through, maybe it's a good thing none of them want to pursue a sporting career. even if tickets to tournaments would be nice. DD1 also thinks tennis is bad for me, as I get way too stressed watching it. She might have a pointGrin

Raahh · 15/08/2016 21:06

Becker- I've been trying to find out if Cincy is on eurosport, Doesn't seem to be. The US open is though. Which is good as I no longer have Sky.

I have been half expecting Rafa to withdraw from Cincy- the last week has to have taken it's toll. There's still time, I guess, as he has a bye in the first round. He risked a lot to play the Olympics, but got to carry the flag, and get a second gold medal (but I hope it doesn't mean he may end up withdrawing from Flushing Meadows).

Have been watching the cycling. I am as befuddled by the Omnium as I have been with a lot of the track cycling. Love watching it though.

And Inverdale is a prat, who really needs to do his research, rather than try to ingratiate himself with his interviewee. Pity Steve Redgrave was too nice to deck him, when he had the chance. Grin

But we have been spared Andrew Castle, so must count our blessings. Grin

Raahh · 15/08/2016 21:07

and Becker us? perve at Delpo's thighs?? Never ...GrinBlush

He does have nice thighs.

Cincy is a Masters tournament so it'll only be on Sky as they have the rights.

Happy birthday to MissRaahh for tomorrow Cake

Raahh · 16/08/2016 00:03

I thought as much Drama- but I can live in hopeGrin.

Thanks - she is quite easy to please, DD1 (despite being a 9 year old teenager in other ways). She has been very excited about finally turning 10 though.

So much for my early night. Ddog is having none of it, and keeps howling at the moonGrin

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 16/08/2016 00:08

Well 10 is a significant birthday, double figures dontcha know!

The moon is making my mutts yappy tonight as well Confused

I could do with an early night too, but I'm loving the Olympics too much.

Raahh · 16/08/2016 00:30

I'm finding myself watching things just because they are on.Grin

The head at dd's school always says 'double digits' when someone is 10. DD1 thinks this is hilarious. She is the youngest in her year (although you wouldn't know it). It has been a long time coming, this birthday!

DramaAlpaca · 16/08/2016 00:37

Oh me too. I am now quite the expert in lots of different sports. I become an instant expert in these sports every four years, surprise surprise Grin

I've been loving the beach volleyball & the diving, and the gymnastics and the weightlifting. I flipping love the weightlifting!
