TENNIS THREAD!- From the Road to Rio, to Flushing Meadows...

Raahh · 09/08/2016 23:14

before my phone decides to give up altogether, here's a new thread to get us on our way.

Andy Murray still in the Olympic Singles, as is Rafa,

Jo Konta through for the women.

Lots of missing names from the top players- but we are edging towards the US open- without Federer- and who knows, maybe even without Djokovic.

Could we be heading for all change at the top?

Fiderer- not sure what you mean, but only Wimbledon have all- white rules.

anywhere else, they wear what they want.

Fiderer · 14/08/2016 21:13

What's the Cinderella story?

NoBarbaraGood · 14/08/2016 21:15

Delpo's return after so much injury, beating the world no. 1 in the first round, and making it this far ... ain't that enough?

Fiderer · 14/08/2016 21:16

Raahh sorry, meant just that. Only used to whites as don't watch other tournaments so it's weird (not bad) seeing colours Grin

BeckerLleytonNever · 14/08/2016 21:16

Is Hingis a bit stroppy? didn't seem content with ''just'' silver. well done Russians.

and congrats Mattek and sock. Socks looking Amish with the beard.

Are Andy and rafa starting to go bald?

Did kei win for bronze?

Why do the Brazilians hate Argentina so much?

would love Andy to go double gold for GB too but my hearts with Delpo, agree all, a fairytale and I wish it earned ranking points.

knowing delpo hell be ecstatic with silver, unlike robson last time and hingis. so would Andy, so...aaaargh! whoever wins wins. Tennis.

whats with the yellow shoes?????

CremeEggThief · 14/08/2016 21:16

Basically, JM was all set to break through and probably become the 3rd best player behind Fed and Rafa, after winning the US Open in 2009. He beat Rafa and Fed back to back in that tournament and I think he was the first to do that. Then in 2010, he injured his right wrist, followed not that long after by injuring his left.Sad

NoBarbaraGood · 14/08/2016 21:17

Fairytale story! THAT'S what I should have said, not Cinderella.

CremeEggThief · 14/08/2016 21:18

Brazil and Argentina have a longstanding rivalry mainly over football and which is perceived as the main country in Latin America.

Raahh · 14/08/2016 21:22

Becker- think Rafa has been thinning for a while, and he knows it. Murray has a definite bald patch he doesn't bother hiding.

OP posts:
Raahh · 14/08/2016 21:24

and ranking points would be so deserved, if Delpo won this.

I haven't been able to find out why Rio isn't giving points, when London did.

OP posts:
NoBarbaraGood · 14/08/2016 21:25

Full disclosure: I was not happy with JMDP back at that US Open in 2009.
-----
That was a disappointing result in his service game. I hope he perks up from here on in.

NoBarbaraGood · 14/08/2016 21:25

no points this time.

NoBarbaraGood · 14/08/2016 21:32

Nice break back -- keep it going, Juan.

BeckerLleytonNever · 14/08/2016 21:33

Think Delps tired after match yesterday. Hope its not a bagel match and he gives all he can.

right, going to sign off now and watch this . good, he just got a game.

BTW these overpaid BBC prestenter, did anyone hear the presenter after the Murray/Nish match say Murray won 2 sets to NIL ????????????????

NoBarbaraGood · 14/08/2016 21:33

Yuck. It's like I've committed the commentator's curse.

CremeEggThief · 14/08/2016 21:35

2 nil??Shock I agree that Del Potro looks tired, but he has time to play himself into the match.

NoBarbaraGood · 14/08/2016 21:50

Oh good -- back on serve.

I only just learned that commentators aren't always on site when they are covering matches. Sometimes, they are just in a studio somewhere. I was aghast.

Am I the only one who didn't know?

The pair who are doing the phlegmatic play-by-play on the NBC app sound like they could be in Pig's Knuckle, Arkansas for all the life they are bringing to the match. Thank heavens for the crowd.

CremeEggThief · 15/08/2016 00:20

I think the end is near. Del Potro has given his all, but he looks shattered now.

AmIthatbloodycold · 15/08/2016 00:26

Desperate for bed but loving this match

I do love Delpo but not as much as Andy

Plus we've had super Saturday and this has turned into sensational Sunday medal wise

Who could possibly not want TeamGB to win gold here

Raahh · 15/08/2016 00:37

vamos Juan !!

OP posts:
AmIthatbloodycold · 15/08/2016 00:42

Really creme. I was thinking that he looked to still be in this

Tense. I'm desperate for bed too Smile

CremeEggThief · 15/08/2016 00:59

He's had a new lease of life after the trainer came on, but he's looked tired at various times all match, especially when he has to get down low.

CremeEggThief · 15/08/2016 01:05

What.a.match. Wow.

trixymalixy · 15/08/2016 01:08

Yessss!! What an amazing match.

Who could possibly not want TeamGB to win gold here

^^ this!!!

DramaAlpaca · 15/08/2016 01:08

What a match indeed! I'm feeling quite emotional here. Very, very happy for Andy, and so glad Delpo is back to his best.
