TENNIS THREAD!- From the Road to Rio, to Flushing Meadows...

Raahh · 09/08/2016 23:14

before my phone decides to give up altogether, here's a new thread to get us on our way.

Andy Murray still in the Olympic Singles, as is Rafa,

Jo Konta through for the women.

Lots of missing names from the top players- but we are edging towards the US open- without Federer- and who knows, maybe even without Djokovic.

Could we be heading for all change at the top?

I have been glued to the cycling, although I have no idea what is going on half the time. Plus, i do like Sir Chris Hoy. And mark Cavendish makes me laugh- his interviews never come across as 'rehearsed' responses, and I'm always expecting him to swear.

I usually love the track and field events, but they are on so late, i just watch the highlights.

It's very rainy in Brazil today/tonight.

I am watching the hurdles- most of them were knocked down!

Raahh · 16/08/2016 00:45

Blimey- I really wouldn't want to be out in that- surely it can get too slippy to run?

I love the cycling. My favourite sport - after tennis, of course Wink

Cav is such a competitor. He's pleased he's got an Olympic medal at last, but he wants to be the best at everything he does and you could just tell he was gutted it wasn't gold Grin. I'm a big fan of Elia Viviani, the Italian who beat him to the gold medal, so I was delighted for him. He seems to be an all round nice guy.

DramaAlpaca · 16/08/2016 00:48

I've just put the athletics on. Bloody hell, the rain! Shock

Raahh · 16/08/2016 00:52

I was just shocked that Viviani was one of the riders who fell, and still managed to win!

OP posts:
Raahh · 16/08/2016 00:54

mmmm Michael Johnson

DramaAlpaca · 16/08/2016 00:58

Cycling sprinters are tough cookies. They have hearts of lions and sharp elbows, and a little tumble won't put them off.

Michael Johnson is a legend. He's so good at tempering all the gushing that comes from the British members of the panel, and giving an international perspective.

Plus he has a voice that could melt the knickers off a nun Grin

Raahh · 16/08/2016 01:02

knickers off a nun

oh yes....!

Miss the tennis! Sad. was tempted to take out sky sports for a month for Cincy and any other, till the US open but really cant afford it.

Took DC to Wimbledon today. can only go when the tourney ISNT on as its too crowdy, noisy for her (autistic) and too expensive for us.

did the museum tour and a lovely guide took me and DC personally to see centre court as DC couldn't cope with a group of people touring round.

really enjoyed it, and Im glad DCs a s big a fan as me. didn't force her (mostly!) but she decided she loves it and Lleyton Hewitt s and John Isners her fave players, and shrieky too! Tennis.

they said a statue of Murray wont be made until he retires from the main tour, don't know why.

Hope Delpos okay now and still fit (in every sense of the word Blush) for the next lot of tourneys.

BeckerLleytonNever · 16/08/2016 17:07

forgot to add, I could have sworn we saw Dom Inglot (sp) at the train station there.

saw Phil Jupitas there too. (namedropper)

Raahh · 16/08/2016 20:15

Delpo has been given a wild card for the US open which is great. I hope he can build on the momentum he has built up with Wimbledon and the Olympics. He's come such a long way since his first matches back at Delray beach. Vamos !!

OP posts:
CremeEggThief · 16/08/2016 22:39

And rightly so. Vamos Juan Martin!

BeckerLleytonNever · 18/08/2016 16:21

think its awful players ranking points weren't awarded for Olympics- its a tennis tournament after all.

and I thought injured players had a protected ranking? didn't laura Robson?

Shock that Delpos so low in the rankings. hed have been given a squillion points after his olymic acheivements.

Raahh · 21/08/2016 22:11

I'm sad the Olympics are over- but happy that the US Open is nearly upon us. I need to stop watching things into the early hours though- my body clock is very messed up (and the DC will be back at school soon Hooray Boo!Grin

The US Open is a killer, time-wise. I was abroad the year Murray won and I stayed up to watch the final ('just one more game ... oooh, a break ... I'll just watch the end of the set ...') With the time difference, it was about 5:30 am when it finished!

Raahh · 21/08/2016 22:19

Becker- I don't (personally ,anyway) think the ATP care about the Olympics. And they are the ones who offer the points The Olympics is nothing to do with the ATP, so not points. It's another thing that still, after 30 years , makes me think tennis has no place at the Olympics. The ATP still had tournaments whilst the first week in Rio was on. I can't imagine there being major tournaments in other sports , during the Olympics.

But I really wish Delpo had gained some points , as he is clearly not a 140-ranked player (or 400+ as he was at the beginning of the year).

And Go Cilic! at Cincy- even if the trophy it is the ugliest vase looking thing ever Grin

OP posts:
Raahh · 21/08/2016 22:20

Space it is a nightmare. I fell asleep when Rafa won in 2013, woke up just as he was being announced as the winner, and getting his trophy Blush.

OP posts:
Raahh · 21/08/2016 22:24

Marin has the first set , which is great.

Shame he has gone separate ways with Goran though.

OP posts:
Raahh · 21/08/2016 22:47

Whoop! Cilic wins! Hurrah.

shame about the vase though .Grin

OP posts:
AmIthatbloodycold · 21/08/2016 23:04

Aw what a shame Andy's unbeaten run has come to an end. Well done Marin, glad he's won his first masters

I'm impressed that Andy got through to the final, when he must have been as knackered as the others who fell by the wayside much earlier. What a star

Onwards and upwards to the U.S. Open

More sleepless nights ahead.

nearly lost the thread, so thought I'd bump it.

Not long to go...

Glad I've found this. I was looking at the US Open app and there is a quote from Djokovic where he says - ' Slams are valued the most in our sport as tournaments historically, so these are the tournaments where I want to do well.'

Now I don't like Djokovic and I am a huge Murray fan so may be reading something more into it, but is that a sideswipe at Murray's Olympic success? He seemed to want Olympic success badly early in the year?

Anyway- very excited. Murray or Delpo for me in mens.. For the women, I would love Puig to do well- she was awesome in the Olympic final.

Nishky · 28/08/2016 11:57

I am right, I just found a quote where he said Olympic title would be one of the highest, if not the highest achievement of his career.

BeckerLleytonNever · 29/08/2016 16:23

Nishky same here, Murray'Delpo final.

womens- would love to see Konta there.

otherwise anyone but serena diva. read in a tennis book that she said, when the fictional film 'wimbledon' came out '' it must be a story if a british player wins'' (or words to that effect.)

Hope Murray sculpted that quote in stone, and shoved it up her anus!

will miss the Fedster though.

completely gone off Djoko in the past couple of years,. for many reasons.
