TENNIS THREAD!- From the Road to Rio, to Flushing Meadows...

Raahh · 09/08/2016 23:14

before my phone decides to give up altogether, here's a new thread to get us on our way.

Andy Murray still in the Olympic Singles, as is Rafa,

Jo Konta through for the women.

Lots of missing names from the top players- but we are edging towards the US open- without Federer- and who knows, maybe even without Djokovic.

Could we be heading for all change at the top?

Won't be a repeat of Rio, Delpo and Murray due to meet in the quarter finals in theory.

Doesn't mean Juan won't be there, though.Wink Would be great if he could win here again, and the points would put him firmly back in with the top players.

Saw a bit of the Edmund /Gasquet match, Edmund up 2 sets. I remembered its on Euro sport, go me!

OP posts:
Waltons · 29/08/2016 17:16

Wondered where you'd all got to! Kyle Edmund is thrashing the pants off Gasquet. ('scuse the turn of phrase!)

Raahh · 29/08/2016 17:22

Looks very hot there too. Hope Kyle has sun cream on, or he will end up looking like Boris!

OP posts:
Raahh · 29/08/2016 17:24

(Kyle is also wearing a very bright yellow kit, can't miss himGrin)

OP posts:
Waltons · 29/08/2016 17:30

Need the visuals from you, Raaah - no Sky here. Sad

Raahh · 29/08/2016 19:46

Sorry- had to go and do stuff. Good win for Kyle, and Cilic as well. Am watching Rafa, who is playing like he means business against Istomin, and won the first set 6-1. Vamos !

OP posts:
Raahh · 29/08/2016 19:50

Of all the slams, this the one I like watching least. I really don't like the courts, and it is very, very echo-y.

Isner is in trouble at the moment.

OP posts:
Raahh · 29/08/2016 22:13

Since when have the slams had tie breaks in the 5th set? Watching the end of the Isner match- a tie break!!

OP posts:
Raahh · 29/08/2016 22:17

Actually, I know it's only at the US Open, but it must be ages since I've had the chance to watchg a 5 setter at the US, to pay any attentionGrin

And Isner wins- shame, as the young American Tiafoe was brilliant. Poor lad is very upset.

OP posts:
Raahh · 29/08/2016 22:19

Aww, this is when I really hate the whole, 'let's interview them straight after the match' shit. Poor bloke is devastated, last thing he wants to do is say how he'll learn from this, and all that guff.

OP posts:
Nishky · 30/08/2016 08:06

I agree Raahh, I cringed when they interviewed him- he handled it very well.

Dan Evans/Heather Watson/Laura Robson/Naomi Broady/Aliaz Bedene today! Saw a tweet from Dan Evans reminding BBC sport that he was playing- they listed the first round ties for home players and completely missed him off! Outrageous

NoBarbaraGood · 30/08/2016 13:54

Hello, tennis fans -- I'm happy to be watching a Slam in my own time zone.

I felt so sorry for Frances Tiafoe (even though his name is spelled the girls' way. Has no one told his parents?!) Nice to think that at 18, he'll be around for a while yet. He played some amazing tennis.

The other American teenager, Taylor Fritz lost to Jack Sock, whom I don't care for.

Am I the only person in the world who finds it unusual that Taylor Fritz just got married? At 18?

Sorry that Monica Puig went out yesterday.

Enjoyed watching Jo Konta last night. Did not enjoy watching Jerky Janowitz (SP?) play against a distinctly sub-par Djokovic. So many other players would have capitalized on that.... Grateful I switched off before witnessing what is reported to have been another toe-curlingly needy post-match interview with ND. #feelingblessed.

BeckerLleytonNever · 30/08/2016 15:59

My parents married at 18/19 years old, so no big shock there, people married younger years ago, though, so I guess its a bit unusual these days. still......

well done Kyle the canary!!!! couldn't miss him on court could you? and lovely Gasquet even though he was nursing a back twinge gave full credit to Kyle...unlike some players.

and well done Jo.

yes, weird seeing a tie break in 5th set, but IMO they should do it in all GS on the mens side. still unfair they have to play 5, not 3 and get same prize money as the women.

go Andy! and Heather! and the rest of the Brits!

awwwSad Dustin went out yesterday. Tennis Tennis Tennis.

NoBarbaraGood · 30/08/2016 17:39

Sorry Becker -- no offense intended, my own sister was married that young, and still is, 30+ plus years later. Most 18-year-olds I know now aren't really ready to settle down, though!

Oh, watching Heather now, with my fingers crossed.....

NoBarbaraGood · 30/08/2016 17:53

So much for that. She didn't seem to be feeling too well.

Nishky · 30/08/2016 21:35

Just watching Broady and Robson- would love Robson to win- it irks me that Broady won't play for the Federation cup team

BeckerLleytonNever · 31/08/2016 16:02

No Barbra gosh, sorry, I didn't mean my post to sound the way you read it, I wasn't thinking it was offensive at all, I was justobserving that many in the past used to get married early, so I wasn't really surprised if someone gets married early these days.

sorry if you took that the wrong way, nothing was intended in any way. Smile.

Anyway back to the tennis Tennis.

isn't Robson a sulky sore loser? must be BFF with Bouchard! just sulked off the court.

as for peter andre kyrios, not shaking hand with the umpire, what a baby.

I liked Venus' dress, she looks elegant doesn't she?

whats with the neon outfits? a rebellion after the whiteness of Wimby? LOL.
Tennis.

Raahh · 31/08/2016 17:14

Becker funny you say that about Robson/Bouchard , they used to be very close, but Bouchard then froze her out. Both very hard work, the two of them anyway. Not surprised by Kyrgios, he really doesn't learn by his mistakes, does he? Has no manners. (and I am not going to be swayed by the 'he's still young' argument. There will be people still using that old chestnut when he's in his 40's Grin).

The Neon outfits remind me of 'Fame' and the 80's. Expecting them to start wearing leg warmers next.

I am incredibly nosy and really want to know what the 'private' issues are that Djok has allegedly had. Jelena didn't look happy the other day and left before the end of his match.

Kyle has the first set against Escobedo.

OP posts:
NoBarbaraGood · 01/09/2016 03:01

There have rumors that Djokovic had been stepping out with a Bollywood star. All over now, though.

😶

GrouchyKiwi · 01/09/2016 13:50

I'll be keeping up with the tournament via this thread. I think all tennis should be played in Europe so I can actually watch it.

Murray and Konta in the finals will be a dream, but I'll settle for Not Novak and Not Serena.

BeckerLleytonNever · 01/09/2016 15:58

Raah Im also longing to know what Novaks probs are! difo using that excuse for him poor form isn't he?

why is Jelena showing her face and with him if hes strayed though? knows where her breads buttered?

Hope Kontas better now. Pironkova was less than gracious though saying the extended bathroom break/time out for Jo put her off her game.

Raahh · 02/09/2016 00:03

Arghh!

I really need to wean myself off watching late matches. The dc go back to school next week, so come Monday, dragging myself out of bed at 6.15am is going to be difficult if I have been up until 2!

Naomi just lost the first set to Radwanska. She had a bunch of set points too.

Was hoping to 'see' the Stan match, but it has probably been delayed because of the rain.

OP posts:
Raahh · 02/09/2016 00:25

Grrr. I was watching the Lopez match, and they have put Serena on instead.

And here comes Marion, to fawn all over her. Hmm

OP posts:
Raahh · 02/09/2016 14:03

I'm so pleased for Delpo- he is playing really well, I watched some of the recording this morning. Vamos- I hope it carries on.

And Rafa is playing tonight, I really don't want to stay up late again, but....Grin

OP posts:
BeckerLleytonNever · 02/09/2016 15:52

well done Dan Evans.

Raah the sun shines out of Serenas arse in the USA. Much prefer Venus.

Much more calm and composed and elegant. Love her figure and long legs Envy.whtever she wears its subtle and not garish/neon.

US open used to be shown on sky sports wasn't it? not that I get that any more but I do get eurosport, and all the freelance commentators (including the ghastly Castle) have flown the nest to eurosport.

Hope delpo goes far in the tourney. Tennis.

Is the US Open the only GS that: men play 5th set tie breaks?
Doubles men best of 3 sets?
