Starts tomorrow - anyone planning to watch?

It looks like a new version of Castaway without the heavy-handed interference of the TV crew and without the cosy huts provided.

Over half the people there thought she did have a use.

Them voting to keep the massage place really isn't proof of that though. Being likeable could have played a part, as could the determination to vote against those who were bullying her, or simply a desire to see her doing something instead of causing arguments by flaunting her inactivity. It doesn't necessarily mean that those who voted in her favour believed she was pulling her weight.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/08/2016 20:14

Well, yes, we could project lots of reasons on their voting behaviour. But the fact remains that over half voted for the massage tent/sweat lodge and, by association, it seems for Tara. Also, they had been using her services.
In terms of effectiveness,it could be argued Tara provided x number of massages. The gamekeeper still hasn't provided any food. Hence she was more effective at massage than he was at game-keeping Grin
But there's a definite sexism in the bullies' value system.

TheGruffaloMother · 12/08/2016 20:56

It definitely is a vote in her favour regardless of the motives, true. And I don't personally believe she should have left, or that the bullies are showering themselves in glory. They're horribly sexist. But none of that means she's pulling her weight once we look at it objectively. Neither side is the model citizen.

Am I the only one who thought Glen an arse! The way he switched once he realise Caggy wouldn't reciprocate his feelings was quite troubling. It felt as if he was putting on a softer persona just for her benefit and then his mood darkened and he started plotting the bully tactics in the hate hut.

Just watching this at the moment after stumbling on the site recently on holiday on my way to the Singing Sands. It's only about 1.5km squared and not far from Acharacle. I'm annoyed at how useless many of the women are. They seem to have gone for posh unemployable women with few practical skills. Doctors are usually fairly practical but the one here seems work shy and more netmum hugz than mumsnet grittiness. They seem to avoid confrontation rather than discuss it and deal with it as a group. I suspect many of them pretended to have more experience than they really have like the fisherman. There are a lot of women on my allotment site so I dislike the view of women as incapable of physical work. They should have refused to take nicotine addicts. It sounds as though many of them have left now any way. Faffing on with sweat rooms in Spring rather than sorting out the food growing was mad. Is there really no shellfish there? 23 people sounds too many and too many young people with no practical skills and no desire to learn any although those with skills aren't delegating well

Does anyone know when the next block of episodes will be on?

2rebecca my bf and I have been discussing how they will cope when they run out of cigarettes!

MrsJoeyMaynard · 08/09/2016 18:46

They just said the next lot of episodes would be in the autumn after the last episode.

Agree the way they were prioritising which jobs to do first was rubbish, they clearly hadn't adjusted to the reality of "once this food runs out, we can't just nip to the supermarket for more"

2rebecca · 08/09/2016 20:22

I don't see how they can survive winter. Ok the Kale will survive the winter but when discussing veg they seemed to have gone for temperamental crops like chilliest rather than leeks onions and swedes. I would have loved to see more of the veg growing logistics. Fencing in the livestock and digging the ground should have been the first priorities. They could have had a veg team a fencing team and a chopping wood team. Building their own winter huts in Spring is mad, that could have waited until summer. Not sure how they expect deer to get in there given the fences. What are they going to occupy themselves with in winter when it's dark from 3 until 9 (ish)

MrsJoeyMaynard · 08/09/2016 20:31

I don't think they have any idea how much wood they'll need to see them through winter.

This was a few weeks ago, so I might not be remembering perfectly, but they showed a bit where one of the men was whining about not wanting to chop wood, and saying that if he was in his own winter hut, he could just chop it as he needed it.
For starters, if it's freezing outside, you don't want to be in a situation where there's no possibility of a fire until you've spent a few hours chopping wood, and secondly, the wood needs to be dry and seasoned before burning if it's going to burn well, which means chopping it and storing it well before you need to use it.

CurbsideProphet · 09/09/2016 22:08

The unpleasant outdoors instructor bloke really grated on me. He was just winding people up, so nothing ever got sorted. I found it v odd that they allowed the goats to just roam free, as surely they could get into the porridge oats etc?!

Yes I agree they seem v unprepared for the reality of winter...

Have watched them all now. The bullying by some men is unpleasant but I am glad Tara has gone. She seemed spectacularly unsuited to being a life coach. She never seem to discuss things or argue her case just refused to do things and made PA smart alec retorts.
Giving some people larger portions than others makes sense as being fair doesn't always mean being equal. The average man needs more calories than the average woman and someone doing physical work will need more than someone sitting around. The 2 medically trained folk should have explained this.
They just don't have enough proper meetings where everyone discusses stuff. All I have seen in the meetings is speeches. It could be the proper meetings aren't shown. It is disappointing how little stuff is shown. 8 more have apparently left. Not surprised Jenna left as she gave up medicine because it was too hard and said she was only going to do fun things from now on which would have made me exclude her from the cast. They should have recruited people who actually want to live in a commune for a year not people who want to go hunting on their own.
