Let's hope this series will be better then last one

Obviously you will save money if not buying the most exspensive items every week /spending £200/300

How about helping a family who spend £50/60 and need to cut it down even more

Tho do love the taste challenge esp when they say something is disgusting - and it's their usual posh brand 😂😂😂

I think it was more she hadn't realised how simple and quick it was to do Hmm.

FeelingSmurfy · 28/07/2016 23:42

I loved her reaction to the teabags

I think the adults are more open-minded about trying the food and drinks on this series, in the past the kids have been good at trying things but the adults have said they don't like it before they even get near it. That really winds me up, especially because they were moaning all the time and that will put the kids off when the kids are actually going along with it!

FastWindow · 28/07/2016 23:46

I know someone who is related to this weeks family

Irrelevant. The shop bought passata irks me so, so much.

Xmasbaby11 · 29/07/2016 00:03

Shop bought passata? Is there another kind? I think of it as a basic ingredient like chopped tomatoes.

I really like the families in this series and I think they've become so much more confident with cooking. I really liked their house this week!

Were they eating a cake a day? I am in awe she's lost her baking obsession - I bake three times a week (give most away) and also do normal cooking - I don't find it the same satisfaction at all.

I think they are really lucky in this series the kids all try anything and say they enjoy it. My kids are 2 and 4 and won't even try a different shape of pasta.

TyneTeas · 29/07/2016 21:35

I know it's not the point but...

I don't buy Passata. I use a hand blender on a tin of tomatoes then push them through a sieve. Only takes a couple of minutes

unimagmative13 · 29/07/2016 23:29

Can I just ask why would you do that? It's essentially from tinned anyway? Surely if you were going to be correct about it you would make it from fresh tomatoes?
If I was going to used shop bought tins to make something I'd just buy it?

TyneTeas · 29/07/2016 23:37

A tin of tomatoes is a lot cheaper then passata

TyneTeas · 29/07/2016 23:38

And tins with your own herbs and spices is cheaper than jars of made sauce and not full of salt and sugar and thickers and stuff

TyneTeas · 29/07/2016 23:40

Thickeners

redgoat · 30/07/2016 08:29

400g Tins of tomatoes are 31p in Lidl and their passata is 35p for 500g. I'm quite happy to pay 4p for more product and not having to push it through a sieve. I think the basics range in sainsbury is similar.

dillite · 30/07/2016 09:12

The amount of money saved vs the amount of time it takes to make a pasta seems to be so insignificant that it just seems like such a waste of time to me.

raisedbyguineapigs · 30/07/2016 09:22

Tyne there are no thickeners in Sainsburys basics Passata, or Lidl that you get in a carton. It basically is their tins of tomatoes, but blended for a few pence more.

TyneTeas · 30/07/2016 11:08

I meant thickeners in ready made sauces

I don't often use Passata to be honest but hadn't realised you could now get it cheaply, it didn't used to be

FeelingSmurfy · 30/07/2016 11:10

dillite I don't always make pasta sauce, I sometimes use a jar. I much prefer making it myself but I like to leave it simmering for a long time to get the full flavour so sometimes I just don't have time. I make it as often as I can and make plenty for the freezer, but if there isnt any left then I will use a jar.

It is cheaper to make your own, it is an easy thing to make, it's healthier and most importantly the taste is a million times better!

I say give it a go, I think you will be pleasantly surprised Smile and this is coming from someone who uses jars as well as making it from scratch

FeelingSmurfy · 30/07/2016 11:12

Oh, and most of the time making it is leaving it to simmer, the preparation doesn't take long at all and for me that includes chopping loads of fresh tomatoes (though I often use frozen onion)

raisedbyguineapigs · 30/07/2016 14:41

Yes it used to be ridiculously expensive. I started buying it a couple of years ago when i went shopping in Lidl instead of Sainsburys. I think the major supermarkets then cottoned on that they couldn't sell it at such a mark up. I use it now instead of chopped tomatoes in currys, chilli and pasta sauce.

BluePitchFork · 30/07/2016 14:48

passata is thicker than tinned chopped tomatos.
it's slightly more processed, for passata the toms are cooked and then passed through a sieve to remove pips and skin.
chopped tinned toms are the whole thing without skin, just chopped and canned.

dollybird · 03/08/2016 13:18

I buy asda's smart price passata which is about 35p. It's the only (cheap) one without salt added. I can really taste the salt in other ones. I don't add salt to anything

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/08/2016 16:00

tonight episode

Gregg Wallace and Chris Bavin are in Hampshire to help the Haynes family, whose conflicting tastes mean they are eating different meals, which is causing waste and their food bills to spiral. Child minder Jodie has other mouths to feed in the evening, as well as her two young children, while father Rob is often home late and prefers spicier food, so buys pre-prepared meals for himself. However, their disparaging tastes mean the family is going to the shops 11 times a week and spending over twice the national average. Last in the series

TroubleinDaFamily · 03/08/2016 16:21

Disparaging Hmm

Please tell me that is a typo.

paulapantsdown · 03/08/2016 17:15

Eleven times a week!?! I get the right hump if I have to go twice.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/08/2016 17:34

I copied and pasted from to guide. That's their word 😁😁

11 is a lot - wonder what meals she does as a cm

OP posts:
BeJayKayven · 03/08/2016 20:14

£200 a week seems an awful lot if the man doesn't actually eat a meal at night

PurpleDaisies · 03/08/2016 20:16

Anyone catch the "naice ham" in the fridge?

BeJayKayven · 03/08/2016 20:18

Yes!

And I want jelly now
