Change of quiz master this year

Hopefully the parents are a bit more media savy this time round

Question is, will we be able to get to the end of the series without grimacing? It is fascinating and at the same time slightly grimy.....

Child Genius US was on tonight on 'Lifetime' channel - these blimming pushy parents are everywhere Grin

OfstedAintEverything · 19/07/2016 00:35

It's No different than other reality TV programmes, they all use people as publicity fodder: things like House of Tiny Tearaways (people did that for free behavioural counselling), Jeremy Kyle (which they do for free paternity testing), Judge Judy (which apparently folk go on because it's a fake court but it pays the loser's compensation as payment for them going through the mock-up of a "court"...
For this lot it's having their darling get lots of screen time, so for Curtis and his "brand" it's advertising, presumably the more "normal" parents do it to show not everyone is that pushy...

LemonRedwood · 19/07/2016 20:20

Holy cow, watching this for the first time tonight. I want to slap Christopher's dad.

I'm not sure I like the Kobus man either (missed whose dad he is).

Tangofandango · 19/07/2016 20:41

Lemon I can't remember who the son of Kobus is but the dad looks like he could be the son of Bob Monkhouse!

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 19/07/2016 21:00

It seems that displaying any kind of magnanimity or graciousness in victory was omitted from Mogs busy revision schedule.

Poor kids,

LemonRedwood · 19/07/2016 21:16

Oh my goodness, Tango, you're right!

Emochild · 19/07/2016 21:55

Kobus is Joshua's father

He's a very strange man

Ugh I hate Christopher's dad. What a bell end! His wonky glasses are driving me mad!

I really like Mog. Ultimately he is still a 12 year old child, most competitive children are going to be pretty happy when they win something. I think gracious in victory comes with maturity. I love his mum's expression a lot of the time, she just looks bemused.

Jayfee · 19/07/2016 22:21

I pity the children of the pushy mum withthe daughter who got knocked out. Mum has written a book, child is aiming for Olympic gold in ice skating. Mum from hell in my opinion.

MoonfaceAndSilky · 19/07/2016 22:41

Lemon I can't remember who the son of Kobus is but the dad looks like he could be the son of Bob Monkhouse!

Yes, yes, that's who he reminded me of less bloody funny though Grin

Aeroflotgirl · 19/07/2016 23:10

I can't stand Christopher's dad, he needs a good slap in the face.

BeJayKayven · 19/07/2016 23:36

Christopher's dad and the "manager" mum are arseholes, I feel sorry for their children.

Mog is a lovely boy inside, just lacking a bit of maturity (but he is only 11).

Aeroflotgirl · 20/07/2016 08:44

I have a dd who has ASd, I suspect Mog is on the spectrum, he does lack social awareness, and there are some things that are familiar.

Davros · 20/07/2016 10:55

I agree there is a liberal dose of AS on this programme but not always the children! But we're not supposed to Dx based on heavily edited but enjoyable TV!

Aeroflotgirl · 20/07/2016 13:44

davros I was not dx but just making an observation on what we can see,

aeroflotgirl I'm just sayin' - when any of us who have some knowledge of AS/ASD we get told not to Dx based on what we see on tv, especially this programme which is brimming with it (imo)! Not having a go, I agree with you

HarryPottersMagicWand · 20/07/2016 21:28

The children all come across as nice, it's (some) of the parents who don't!

I sometimes think I'm a bit of a pushy parent, then I see things like this and think no way am I (maybe a little bit but everything in moderation). I'd rather my children have social skills, imaginations beyond what activity is micromanaged at that time and a childhood in which to play with toys and run around without being tested.

There is a child in my DCs class who is very very advanced, far far above any of the others, as are their siblings. Parents have obviously done a lot to get them all to the level they are at. But apparently their social skills have been very poor and they have very little imagination. I'd rather have my slightly above average children who have got there naturally and have great imaginations and knows how to interact with others anyday.

I bet most of the children on this programme wouldn't be the high levels they are without their parents banging on and on about being a genius.

It made me laugh when Sophia's mum said they don't have time for dinner at home so have to eat healthy meals on the go and showed them sat eating a huge pizza! On what planet is that healthy?

Alisvolatpropiis · 20/07/2016 22:33

Christopher's father is absolutely appalling.

I hope Christopher rebels and becomes a florist when he is older.

Cagliostro · 20/07/2016 23:15

Yes I laughed at the pizza too!

It annoyed me, Manager Mum's attitude when Sofia went out - talking about how they didn't have enough time to prepare due to their busy schedules (surely she knew that would be the case) and I also heard her say something like 'oh it's just down to luck, whether you get it right or not' errrm... you wouldn't be saying it was luck if she'd got them all right would you? Or if so, what's the point in entering if you think it's luck? Seemed a tad bad loser-ish IMHO (compared with say Charles' mum who was just looking out for his feelings). I wonder if Sofia will be on here in ten years writing a thread on going NC with an overbearing mother. :o

OfstedAintEverything · 24/07/2016 17:44

I am relieved for Sophia that she was eliminated, she was only in the competition for her mum to piggyback free "publicity for the brand".... You could tell from the poor child's indifferrence at not having got through. Hope the children can get through to adulthood and then work out what THEY want in life for THEM....

Can we form a support team for Christopher? He and his mum seem genuinely pleasant but The more I see of his dad the more I am reminded of the overbearing Tudor's dad from last year...
Why do some parents not realise that their aggressiveness is not setting a supportive and good example to their children?

Davros · 24/07/2016 20:56

And what about Christopher's brother? Doesn't get a look in (from what we see, highly edited blah blah!)

JustRichmal · 24/07/2016 22:01

What I find really irksome is they are given a round on general knowledge. General knowledge is general knowledge and not confined to the book they have to study for that round.
I think Mog will do well because the programme is setting his parents in a favourable light compared to the others.
