Just discovered this on iplayer. Only seen two so far and really loving it! Anyone else watching?

OP posts:
Fiderer · 09/07/2016 06:50

I thought too it was odd how little she was mentioned. Was she mentioned at all?

Must admit when the question was asked at the end I did think it was the first wife he meant - even though the second one was so flipping annoying I'd happily have ploughed over her Grin

EsmesBees · 09/07/2016 07:01

(Spoilers here too) I think the first wife may have been mentioned briefly early on. Possibly by Nathan's mother. I did think it odd that Gabriel was so keen to get his Daddy to join him given he already had a dead mother and grandmother.

Really enjoyed the series. Looking forward to the next one.

Cactuar · 09/07/2016 08:59

Thinking about it the great great granddaughter's mother killed herself because she kept seeing Gabriel's ghost so why wasn't she his new "mother". Did enjoy it but did find the last episode a little rushed - I think they should have built up the modern day story a little bit each episode rather than have it all in the last one. Looking forward to the second series though.

Greengager · 13/07/2016 22:36

Yes also the grandmother brought him up after his mum died, doted on him and died in episode 1. Surely that would have solved the ghost's problem?

Clawdy · 13/07/2016 22:43

Too many spoilers on here....it's becoming a thread to avoid if you are watching it weekly, like lots of people.

jelliebelly · 19/07/2016 21:44

Just discovered this on TV this eve so need to catch up loads. Loving all the autumnal scenes / colours too Smile

gingerboy1912 · 24/07/2016 14:26

Next weeks looks good. I got the feeling it was a bit like the film the others with Nicole Kidman.

Clawdy · 26/07/2016 22:48

Tonight's was trying to pack too much in. And why was the fleeing woman leaving at night, clutching her bag,and going through a dark lonely wood?

JessicaEccles · 27/07/2016 13:11

Episode 5- possibly the scariest thing I have seen for some time.

As for the ending- my theory is that time is sort of circular, and is compelled to repeat or echo. So it's not really 'The Others' as neither times are ghosts, or not-ghosts.

2rebecca · 27/07/2016 16:59

I didn't understand this week's at all. Last week I thought it was obvious the teacher killed the girl and found it very slow. This week made no sense. I didn't get why he would evict the priest who had been helping when there were ghosties outside and why a woman would choose that night to go for an evening stroll when everyone had been told to stay in. I also didn't get why one of the ghosts maybe being his son made any difference to the exorcism, surely you'd want all ghosts banished to the ghostie afterlife good and bad?

Clawdy · 27/07/2016 17:06

I think he can't bear to think his child's spirit will be gone forever, and it's making him lose his mind. Why on earth the woman chose that night to leave is ridiculous, you are right.

LadyJK · 27/07/2016 22:41

I really enjoyed the series but I think it's about to come off iPlayer if anyone is planning to watch.

Also enjoyed this TV review by Andrew Collins who talks about the 'Poldark moment' made me giggle (quite a lot of shirt off clips used, not sure they needed that many)

Lorelei76 · 30/07/2016 15:31

I thought Episode 5 was brilliant - though a lot of it has been brilliant.

2rebecca - he doesn't want the ghost of his son exorcised, I think that makes perfect sense? He was all right with the exorcsim when he thought there were random evil elements at play but twigging that his only contact with his son would go too - I think it's logical that he wanted to stop it. Well, okay, not logical, but for a grieving parent, totally understandable.

In terms of leaving at night, she has to surely - if she left in daylight there would be other workers around who would see her and try to stop her? And that particular night - well clearly there shoudl be no one else about and also she didn't believe anything could save the village so thought it best to go away.

I have to be honest, I'm always disappointed when a period drama suddenly pops in a modern element though. I also don't think late introduction of new characters is a great idea, is it just me? If you don't have time to get to know them, you don't have time to care about them.

Abominablebride · 31/07/2016 10:43

I watched episode 6 last night! Looking forward to Tuesday when everyone is caught up as I have so many questions Shock

neveradullmoment99 · 31/07/2016 19:36

I watched the box set before it was on tv. I didnt actually get the end. Please explain anyone [once everyone has caught up of course!]

dailymaillazyjournos · 01/08/2016 22:22

Another one who didn't understand the end. Please can someone explain? Thank you.

Clawdy · 02/08/2016 22:14

I think the seance at the end was raising the question of how Nathan's first wife died. We know very little about her. Possibly a second series?

Abominablebride · 02/08/2016 22:22

So the car? Time slip?

Weightgainorgoodbrain · 02/08/2016 22:42

I think the whole thing is based on time slip - ghosts from the future haunting the present. Excellent stuff. Loved it.

CurrerBell · 03/08/2016 19:29

I loved this - the scariest thing I've watched for a long time. I couldn't watch it on my own, or sleep afterwards! It was beautifully shot. Disorientating themes of time, life and death were introduced from the moment it started with the old photograph of Nathan, the camera then bringing us into the scene.

I was also puzzled by the ending. How could the car end up buried in the marsh in Nathan's time, in material form? The baby was rescued from the car (in the future) - presumably they would have towed out the car as well? Maybe I'm overthinking this... but what affect on history would it have for Victorians to have discovered a car containing future technology? Could the car appear and vanish like the ghosts?

All in all it was a really intriguing take on time travel and the ghost story - and the twist at the end with the seance was great. There has to be a second series!

Lorelei76 · 03/08/2016 21:47

I thought it was superb
Being haunted by the future
I also found the individual storylines really touching
Amazing work
Would love a book of it!

dailymaillazyjournos · 03/08/2016 22:12

Thanks for explanations. So would it be right in thinking that
Nathan and his wife (and other people in the village) are being haunted by people both in the past and from the future. The past - the little boys killed down the mine/Gabriel and the future - The great granddaughter and her daughter?

Lorelei76 · 04/08/2016 10:17

daily mail - yes.

there's a name for this I think - the belief that we all exist in several times and can cross over - but I can't remember it. Is it something to with quantum stuff?

Clawdy · 04/08/2016 16:23

Yes, there is a theory that past, present and future all exist at the same time, and sometimes there is a cross-over. Think there was a non-fiction book called An Experiment With Time, or something like that, that discussed it, written years ago.

dailymaillazyjournos · 04/08/2016 18:10

Thanks so much. I just couldn't work it out without some help
