Ok, like our sister thread for those who have read the books, this is for discussion of Outlander Series 2 but for those who have not read the books and/or don't want any spoilers.

At some point, in case anyone from the book/spoilers thread visits, we should perhaps insert a post about something not involving Sam pictures.Grin.
Like the use of authentic looking props or the hours of sword fighting practice or some Gaelic translation......you know, just for different perspective on season 2. Only a token post, nothing too serious Heeheee.

Just to keep the tone barely out of the gutter for you verbena, I can't believe how much shit the costume designer seems to get from sections of the audience. From snitty people talking about 'authenticity' of the costumes to people who have such a fixed idea in their heads from the book that they obsess over tiny details.

Verbena37 · 25/05/2016 12:24

I love the costumes, especially Claire's Ascottish ones. I'm not as keen on the French ones with the really wide hips thing going on but the shawls and brooches and tweed skirts etc, I adore! I would love to wear stuff like that now Grin.

I can imagine how people do get worked about the precision of them though. Is the designer Scottish? For some reason, I thought she may be American but that's not to say she can't design authentic costumes.

Much preferred season one costumes & well basically Jamie running around the braw countryside all kilted & dirty etc.
DP has spoiled this season slightly for me as he says Sam does "smell the fart" acting like Joey in friends.

She's American verbena. She's also the wife of Ron Moore. Her name is Terry Dresbach. I love that she occasionally gets close to losing her shit on Twitter, God knows she has some provocation.

Verbena as mentioned upthread, a knitted shawl as worn by Claire can be yours for a bargain £140 if you ever visit Doune Castle (aka Castle Leoch)! They had some nice celtic jewellery too.

What sections of the audience, pixie? I would imagine there are some die hard fans out there but from what I've seen the series producers have been more authentic that DG, if anything. The actual colour of Jamie's tartan was bright red in the book, for example, when in fact the tv series has the more realistic darker tones that is all they would have been able to produce at that time.

I'm knitting away at my version of one of Claire's S1 shawls at the moment. That person charging ££££s for them is entitled to every penny if they are hand knitting (I can only go a couple of rows a night so it's taking ages)

There was all sorts of crazy going on around the red dress hud. @outlandercostum on Twitter.

Report
TheHiphopopotamus · 25/05/2016 12:58

I didn't like the red dress, but how the fuck can they nitpick on authenticity when this is a series about a woman who falls through some standing stones and goes 200 years back in time. Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ!

The costumes (along with the scenery, acting, knees etc) are all what makes the series so good.

Ok so I'm now following @outlandercostum.....I think I need to get into the finer detail of outlander....not just watching the programme.

Report
pixieg1rl · 25/05/2016 13:20

I think some of the authenticity people were people who failed to grasp that it's about someone who falls through time. There's probably a subset of people who dislike that all the 18th century people have a full set of teeth and no lice people like my mother who find it very difficult to suspend disbelief

pixie Grin I normally like to nitpick and find anachronisms, but I can't get worked up about Outlander as it's pure and total fantasy. Like a big, beautiful cake but for the eyeballs.

Ah that lot. I think there was a few complaints from them about the wedding dress too.
Agree that it's a bit ludicrous to get in that much of a froth about those sorts of details in a show about time travel.
I'm quite pedantic but dear Christ I'd never take to the costume designer's Twitter feed ffs*. Imagine putting all that work in just to have people come online and slate it.

*Except maybe to jokingly suggest less coverage of Jamie's knees. Grin

They can't win with some people who have read the books first. They'll always have an idea of what things should be like.

There's an argument currently running somewhere on Twitter/the Internet between people who think the scene with Fergus and BJR was well done, people who think it shouldn't have been shown at all and those who think it should have been the same as it was in the book.

The showrunners just can't win.
