I can't see a thread yet, anyone else as a ridiculously excited as me after seeing the teaser trailer.

I reckon Tommy's married May. Or at least I hope so, 'cos I couldn't stand Grace.

OP posts:
Rollergirl1 · 14/05/2016 00:25

Feeling really sorry for Arthur. He can't win whatever he does. And John is becoming like Arthur used to be, a loose cannon!

I'm not liking Tommy's character at the moment. Far too cold and removed.

Was the duchess trying to warn Tommy when she said the sapphire was cursed and she would never wear it. Seemed odd that he would take what she said so seriously.

var123 · 14/05/2016 00:33

Tommy is a gypsy too, so he'd believe in the power of a gypsy curse.

I think the Russian woman was just enjoying letting Tommy know that he'd got a bad deal because the sapphire wasn't all it seemed. TBH though... if you believed in the power of curses, what would be worse: wearing the sapphire on a chain around your neck for a night out or crossing Europe with it shoved up inside you?!

I don't think Grace can be dead because they did that scene at the wedding with Polly where she and Grace stated their mutual dislike and you could see that there was scope for a story to develop there. Why bother putting it in if you are going to kill Grace before anything else happens?

var123 · 14/05/2016 00:37

I think the change in Arthur is a good twist. You'd have thought last serious that having a violent, mentally ill man as your deputy would have been a big problem as he couldn't be trusted to make wise decisions. However, now they are showing that having someone who has found God is an even more unsuitable candidate for the job!

I'm guessing that Arthur will find himself in charge of counting paperclips soon and Michael will become the new deputy.

var123 · 14/05/2016 00:39

last series, not serious! (auto correct)

Rollergirl1 · 14/05/2016 00:48

Polly has always disliked and been suspicious of Grace right from the start. I'm sure there was a scene/exchange between them in Series 1 in the pub when Grace was working as a barmaid and undercover. Polly said that she'd personally kill Grace if she broke Tommy's heart, or something to that effect.

I really hope that the artist guy isn't stringing Polly along too. She is always strong for everyone else and needs someone to look after her for a change.

MarthaCliffYouCunt · 14/05/2016 12:06

Something about Polly isnt sitting right with me. When that painter came to her bedroom door with champagne in episode one she was holding a gun behind the door and was extremely shaken up when she closed the door. And she was behaving like a silly schoolgirl all nervous and giggly when she showed him her dress she intended to wear for the portrait. She wasnt her usual strong "put em in their place" Polly. It doesnt fit in with her character. What is she so nervous about?

var123 · 14/05/2016 12:11

The scene was at the end of the first series, when Polly realised that Grace was a spy but was also in love with Tommy. Polly threatened her with a long hat pin and Grace pointed a gun at Polly, in defence.

Polly told Grace that she might be with Tommy, but she'd never be accepted by Tommy and she'd always classify her with the women from the parish who took her children off her.

So, there's no love lost between them, but it would have been interesting to watch if Grace had tried to become the alpha-female.

(Not that I love this show or anything..!)

var123 · 14/05/2016 12:15

MarthaCliffYouCunt - exactly! The story just isn't knitting together as it did in the first two series.

I am glad its not like the American ones that do a recap every few minutes (presumably for the benefit of those who have the memory of a goldfish!), but the editing in series 3 seems to have left big chunks of the story on the cutting room floor.

MarthaCliffYouCunt · 14/05/2016 12:29

Yes it would have been brilliant to see a power struggle between grace and polly. I wonder have the altered grace's personality too much to come back to what she was before and attempt that? Or is her personality change all a front?

var123 · 14/05/2016 12:45

new not as good writers?

ThursdayLastWeek · 19/05/2016 17:07

Checking in for later Smile

MrsSpecter · 19/05/2016 17:24

Checking in too (i'm martha)

var123 · 19/05/2016 18:27

Maybe this series is not as good as the previous ones, but its still very good. 2.5 hours to go and then the DC need to be out of the room and getting ready for bed, not to return!

There's far too much bad language, violence and sex to let my DC watch it but I wouldn't miss it for anything.

JonSnowsBeardClippings · 19/05/2016 21:04

Hooray! No more Grace

JonSnowsBeardClippings · 19/05/2016 21:20

Arthur is being well creepy about the guns

ThursdayLastWeek · 19/05/2016 21:39

Oh cripes, I had to leave the room!

ThursdayLastWeek · 19/05/2016 21:57

Ok, my reliable source tells me it wasn't as grisly as I feared.

quirkychick · 19/05/2016 22:02

No, thanks to Arthur! I like the way his character is developing. I think this episode is picking up, Tommy's more himself. The priest is very creepy.

Woodhill · 19/05/2016 22:05

I switched over for a bit, too unpleasant

var123 · 19/05/2016 22:49

I liked the bit at the end when Tommy offered to kill the priest (no charge).
This episode was the best so far this series, I thought.
When Arthur announced his wife's (?) pregnancy, was Tommy saying goodbye to the old Arthur, rather than just leaving for a meeting?

SilverBirchWithout · 19/05/2016 23:02

I think Tommy was realising that he could no longer use Arthur as his Rottweiler, and he will need to protect him so he can be a good father.

quirkychick · 20/05/2016 07:25

Yy, I think Arthur is starting to get his own moral compass (as much as a Selby can...), letting the wife go, the mercy killing of the husband. Echoes of the first series and how WW1 had damaged these men.

Definitely the best episode so far, this series.

Did the husband shoot Grace? Were they trying to escape to America?

Who was the husband?

Thanks

absolutelynotfabulous · 20/05/2016 09:12

I found last night's episode rather unsettling. I'm not sure I'm getting this programme. Why was Grace shot? Who did it? And I don't get Arthur standing on the chair and "announcing" his fatherhood. Doesn't ring true for me.

Loving the sets, though. Gives a real feel for the times.

And what was the point to the woman in Wales?

Aargh.....not sure my brain's getting round it all....
