OP posts:
ScummyMummy · 03/01/2007 09:52

lol Enid! I enjoyed it, for nostalgia reasons mostly and because partner was in bed and I enjoyed owning the living room, but I cannot argue with any of your points.

PrincessPeaHead · 03/01/2007 09:57

thought it was complete crap!
and not just because my dh's ex girlfriend wrote it
apparently Miles is based on him (and I noticed she had named one of the many people he was supposedly shagging after me, ta very much, that makes TWO characters in dramas on telly this xmas named after me ha ha ha)

Enid · 03/01/2007 09:59

have you seen The Big Chill?

7 friends reunite over an old friends funeral. They all go to stay in the richest friends huge house. One of them is a business woman who wants one of the blokes to provide sperm for her. One of them wants investment in his new career. One of them is making a film of the whole thing. There is a young girl in it who lives in the house by the pool - the guy making the film tries to shag her.

I am sensing a pattern here

oh and dont forget the bonding over songs from their youth

Enid · 03/01/2007 10:00

god how pleasing

(ex girlfriend in crap career choice )

ScummyMummy · 03/01/2007 10:02

Haven't seen it. I thought the writer was quite irritating in the interview thingy afterwards, peahead. Took it all v seriously and didn't seem to have a sense of humour as such.

puddle · 03/01/2007 10:02

I thought it was bobbins (and had hoped it would be the highlight of my Xmas tv viewing. It seemed very thin.

Didn't believe Egg was a best selling writer.

Why oh why is he still with Milly - have never understood that one.

that embarrassing rant about motherhood (if it's so great why just the one then?)

WHO was watching their child who only ever seemed to be in a travel cot?

Although would have forgiven a lot if Miles and Anna had got together in the end.

PrincessPeaHead · 03/01/2007 10:06

what is also very pleasing is that she tells everyone she is 39 (and said she was 29 when the original came out) when I know for a fact she is..... 43 (33 ditto)
ha ha

mistletoemania · 03/01/2007 10:06

it was crap should have just went to sleep so dissappointing

mancmum · 03/01/2007 10:07

they should not have made it -- it has destroyed the cult and brilliance of the original series ... no thought in story lines at all... no links back to original plots and relationships... milie and egg relationship followed every cliche known... hated it ... and I loved the original .. feel like I have been cheated on!!

PrincessPeaHead · 03/01/2007 10:07

VERY good points about the big chill.

she is a pretty crap writer - she only wrote the first 3 of the original series (which didn't start becoming popular until later on, when the writer changed). I'm surprised they asked her to do this one but maybe she had the rights or something.

anyway...

Enid · 03/01/2007 10:08

I can't believe I am the only one who noticed the, er, similarity

dh said it would have been good if Miles had been found murdered

ScummyMummy · 03/01/2007 10:13

haha indeed! She was v neauseating in a Rachel Cusk sort of way about her visceral yet horrified lurve for her young children or some such crap. She was talking to Mark Lawson on radio 4 and he just let her witter on seriously about it. Yuckola. I mean of course children change your life and affect your deepest emotions and give meaning where there was previously complete shallowness. We've all been there (to varuying degrees) but shut up before you make me sick, eh?

Enid · 03/01/2007 10:16

yes

methinks the lady doth protest too much

Enid · 03/01/2007 10:16

lol @ "visceral yet horrified"

VYH

Gem13 · 03/01/2007 10:21

I'm with Enid on the Big Chill similarities. Though sadly lacking fanciable males (Miles looked like a messy Monty Don with his long hair and jumbo cords - high flying businessman I don't think so) and a decent soundtrack. Give me Jeff Goldblum and William Hurt anyday. And Kevin Kline too please.

Miles was like the bloke out of Couples and Egg was like the bloke out of Teachers. Oh, same actors... Not too difficult then.

Rubbish script, rubbish acting. I am ill and waiting for an overdue baby. Why did I stay up until 10.20?

Enid · 03/01/2007 10:22

I spent NYE with Egg once

at some mad trance club in west london

he was off his face

winnie · 03/01/2007 10:31

I enjoyed it despite it being rather annoying in so many ways

The fact that they'd all meet up at the funeral of Ferdy seems unlikely. I absolutely believe there would have been more than one child amongst them all.

Warren seemed to have had a personality transplant (or maybe he had actually developed as a person?) But was disappointed that his character just came across as somewhat unstable.

Actually I don't find it hard to believe that Egg and Milly are still together BUT did find it hard to believe he'd been a successful writer.

Still liked Anna despite being annoyed by the biological clock thing.

Was really glad to hear Portishead & The Manics and am certain that if I reunited with all of my friends from that time and we'd all had a drink there would be a certain amount of manic dancing going on too.

PrincessPeaHead · 03/01/2007 10:33

she has one kid (coming up to a year old? just over? something like that).
to be fair her mother died when she was v v young so the whole parenting thing must bring up quite a lot of stuff for her.
she was brought up by her stepmother, who is polly toynbee.

ScummyMummy · 03/01/2007 10:39

Wow! My father-in-law hates Polly Toynbee. Many years ago she came building with him and then wrote an article about how sexist he and his mates were and how she was shunned by a male dominated profession. He was dead unimpressed. He said he was being chivalrous and was completely misinterpreted; her name has been a byword for evil in his house ever since...

lazyanna · 03/01/2007 10:43

I was really dissapointed - can you get the originals on DVD, or is it on any of the Skys?

UnquietDad · 03/01/2007 10:47

I liked the Miles rant about "women expect us all to be out there being providers and yet want us home by 6pm cooking lemon sole." That will have resonated with a few blokes!

But yes, it was very "Big Chill", and so "Peter's Friends" that I was expecting Warren to assemble them all in the lounge at the end to announce that he was HIV+ and receive big hugs.

Glad I am not the only person to find Jenkins rather smackable, and laughed at the thing about her down-scaling her age.

marthamoo · 03/01/2007 10:52

Well I liked it

Mind you, I didn't have high expectations - as mentioned, I almost didn't watch. My eagerly anticipated Christmas highlight was Dr Who...and it didn't let me down.

drosophila · 03/01/2007 11:40

PPH are you glad that so many of us were disappointed?

Jimjams2 · 03/01/2007 11:44

not the lone voice batters- I enjoyed it too, although the second series remains my favourite.
