Am enjoying it so far. Very intriguing
premise and beautifully shot. I don't mind subtitles, find they make me concentrate more and am very interested in this period of history. Looking forward to see how it develops...anyone else? ( guess most of you are watching War and Peace tonight!)

I can't find e1 on catch-up / iplayer at all. Does anyone know if its due for a repeat?

It's Channel 4 so that's the catch up service to look for. You could also try the service they were heavily trailing last night which is some sort of internet-based boxed set drama service - it's called Walter something.

We were watching last night. Pretty good start, I thought!

Bob - I thought that too, it was definitely all muzak back then.

Still, it looks good and this series is only 8 episodes long.

Goodbye Lenin is a brilliant film about the wall coming down and it's on Youtube with full subtitles.

Yorksha you can also visit the Stasi prison in Berlin. We went in 2015 (having been to the Stasi museum on a previous visit). Really interesting. They do English tours.

Am watching. It's giving me goose bumps, taking me right back to my teenage years - the fashion, the signage and 99 Red Balloons, that song was everywhere.

I've got it recorded but haven't watched it yet. As a German graduate I'm looking forward to it for the subject & to see if I still remember how to speak German!

I really liked it. There was enough of jump out of seat action and am used to reading subtitles as am hard of hearing.

Thought it was compelling. Tense atmosphere. Unfortunately if someone is ruthless enough they won't baulk at using (sacrificing?) a family member to carry out a potentially dangerous activity.

Plus she is putting her sister's life on the line too with the transplant.

Without wishing to spoil it for anyone yet to watch it, so won't describe in specific detail, was I the only one who was a bit confused at the scene on the train...?

NickiFury · 05/01/2016 11:15

That was the soldier whose place he took.

Thanks, yes I realised that after replaying it.

I thought Tobias the professor and the general's secretary were interesting secondary characters.

It wasn't as grim as "The Lives of Others" in that we did see East Germans having a good time at the mother's birthday party.

I think the boy was chosen partly for his resemblance to the one they bumped off on the train. He must have been a bit dim, though, to phone his girlfriend from his bosses house.

Goodbye Lenin is one of my favourite films.

glamorous I thought that too. He isn't that good a spy really, what with dropping the film at the handover, making the call in the family's house and drawing attention to himself at the garden party. Perhaps we are going to see him hone his skills...
I didn't get the bit in the train either. Presumably the person he is replacing could play the piano.

Destinysdaughter · 05/01/2016 17:41

Thing is, he's not really a spy, he's a young man totally doing this under duress. Looking forward to seeing how this develops...

Glamorous - mine too. I saw it in 2002 and have been in love with Daniel Brühl ever since.

Am over from the Homeland thread now that has finished.

DP and I are both watching this. Really enjoyed the first episode. I liked the fact that he made mistakes, seemed more realistic that way.

Not sure that they could have dialled direct to East Berlin so I checked and wiki says that yes, it could be done but not many people had phones in the East. Here's the quote:

In 1989, the 17 million East Germans (including East Berliners) were served by only 4 million telephones, only half of which were installed in private homes, the rest being in offices, companies, public telephone kiosks, and the like.

We loved it. I am completely rooting for him, despite the fact that he is spying for the east!

Ep 2 has just been screened tonight, diddl

I'm really enjoying it, but it's a part of history I'm really interested in. My uncle worked in West Berlin in the early 80s, and the photos my Mum has are fascinating!

Watched it tonight, was a bit edge of the seat at times and wasn't expecting that attack by the Chinese woman!

I've just seen ep 2 & the ending, his face as he kept talking/flirting with Mayer's secretary.

Hilarious!

And the steak business.

He was so rumbled!

So was that waitress truly trying to kill him or was it just a warning to be more careful or to give him a cover story?
