OP posts:
LassWiTheDelicateAir · 30/01/2016 12:26

I agree re Compeyson (I mentioned him earlier)

IAmAPaleontologist · 31/01/2016 21:58

All go this week isn't it!

Gooseysgirl · 31/01/2016 22:01

OMG!!! Shock Not for the faint-hearted...

SuffolkNWhat · 31/01/2016 22:04

Blimey I'm a seasoned GoT fan but that was intense tonight

regenerationfez · 31/01/2016 22:06

Blimey I didn't expect that, even with the warning at the beginningShock Brilliant acting from everyone there

Helmetbymidnight · 31/01/2016 22:06

Crikey!

ThomasRichard · 31/01/2016 22:07

I definitely didn't need to see that much naked flesh 😳

The guts and leg-sawing were a bit grim.

I'm glad the old prince died though.

SuffolkNWhat · 31/01/2016 22:08

Last one next week, will the Helene storyline be shown on or off screen? It's sort of mentioned in the book as an aside.

Helmetbymidnight · 31/01/2016 22:08

We saw a penis, right?!!

How very unusual.

regenerationfez · 31/01/2016 22:14

They gossiped about her pregnancy so I presume they will hint at her fate too.

regenerationfez · 31/01/2016 22:15

Every week I say how brilliant Jim Broadband is, but he's brilliantly terrible again

thegiddylimit · 31/01/2016 22:43

Right. I loved the battle of Borodino, short in comparison to the book but very much got the essence of it. Altough I still don't really understnd why Pierre decided to go. Annoyed they cut Alpatych's trip to Smolensk.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS. Think they didn't really convey how much Nikolai grew up after losing all that money at cards. Which is annoying, because it makes him much more deserving of Maria. Also, they didn't mention that the connection between Natasha and Andrei means there's a bittersweet aspect to Nikolai and Maria's growing romance because we don't know if they will be able to marry.

Personnally i really like the portrayal of Anatole, I think the actor has that dangerous but attractive sense really well. But I disagree that Aiden Turner couldn't have portrayed that - haven't you seen Being Human? But I think Helene hasn't been portrayed as vacuous enough, the book talks about how she's the toast of St Petersburg because she's so smart but actually she isn't. As i predicted Lily Allen is getting better as Natasha get older and i think she'll be great with all the meaty stuff next week.

Overall a fab production but should really hwve been longer and my god I will be seeking out everythign Paul Dano has been in because he's fab.

ThomasRichard · 31/01/2016 22:44

More than one penis. And a whole battalion of men that fake tan forgot :o

I dislike most of the characters, except Sonya, Marya and Andrei. Even he's a bit of a cad.

regenerationfez · 31/01/2016 23:18

I kind of understand why Pierre wanted to go to war. He felt useless sitting in his homes doing nothing while his friends were being heroic. He was completely useless though.

I thought they explained well why the serfs didn't want to go away with Marya. I didn't really get it in the book, but did here, especially in the context of them looking at their own lives in relation to the French after the French Revolution.

They missed Natasha's suicide attempt out. I wonder why? I agree, Lily James is better as an older Natasha. Marya fab again.

Travelledtheworld · 01/02/2016 10:05

Missed it last night but I am at home today watching it on catch up.
I am a nervous wreck ! Have had to pause it mid battlefield scene as am so worried Pierre (going to think of his as Petrushka from now on...) will get blown to smithereens...

Cup of coffee and I will press the play button again...

CeeBeeBee · 01/02/2016 11:56

Some shocking scenes indeed. It will be a real shame when it all ends and I agree that it should have Ben longer.
Andrei seem to have forgiven Anatole, does that mean he's forgiven Natasha too?

regenerationfez · 01/02/2016 12:06

He wanted to kill Anantoly, then when he saw him actually dying, forgave him. Hes taken pity on a dying man. It makes no difference to him in the long run. Natasha is a fallen woman, so he cant just forgive and marry her. It's all about his pride, but those were the times. Its the same with Dolokov and Helene. Pierre challenged him because he publicly damaged his pride. He couldnt care less about his wife, and he knew it was a sham marriage from the start.

CeeBeeBee · 01/02/2016 12:09

Thanks for clearing that.

Nodowntime · 01/02/2016 12:34

Really loved this episode, agree, such a shame that only one is left!

Travelledtheworld,

Petrushka used to be a common Russian family or between close friends diminutive of Peotr, but fell out of use in the modern times, probably mostly because the strongest association is with the puppet (as in Stravinsky's ballet if anyone knows)

From wiki about the puppet:
Although the Russian word "petrushka" has a homonym meaning "parsley," in this context the word is actually a hypocoristic (diminutive) for "Pyotr" (Пётр), which is Peter in Russian. However, the character has little or nothing in common with such stock characters as Petruccio or Pierrot. Petrushka is rather a Russian Punch or Pulcinella in character.

When the old Prince was dying, he called for Andrushka as well (as you would call a boy, child named Andrei, esp. tenderly and intimately, normally a shortening between family members, and addressed to someone much younger than yourself), and I wondered if British viewers understood that change of name...

Nodowntime · 01/02/2016 12:43

Andrushka in Russian would be pronounced not like Petrushka, but with an 'u' like in 'uber', sounding more 'andrewshka' :)

bigbadbarry · 01/02/2016 12:45

Why didn't they make more parts? I am not ready for it to finish :(

regenerationfez · 01/02/2016 12:56

It seems ridiculous to shoehorn the rest of the book into 80 minutes! There is tons left and they have missed some of the nuance out of the relationships all the way through. They spent a fortune on it and must have hours and hours of filming. I hope they don't miss out the epilogue, because it brings the story to a close well.

Here's an interview with Andrew Davies.

Yes, I'd like it to go on and on.

Some things did seem to defy logic last night, - the way all these people keep banging into each other - but I loved it nevertheless. Mariya is a wonderful character, beautifully acted, I think. And didn't she seem beautiful when she looked at Nikolai? So is Nikolai a good guy now? All I could think was 'oof, poor Sonya!'

They did the battle scenes brilliantly I thought. Horrible, horrible stuff.

Helmetbymidnight · 01/02/2016 13:27

And, and...I thought the way the old prince got all dressed up and then came off his horse was awesome! Really gripping TV.

And the bit with the peasants refusing to go, it was like a brilliant nod to the future too.

MaybeDoctor · 01/02/2016 13:56

The build up to the retreat from the Smolensk area was very good - you definitely got the feeling of panic and impending crisis. Stunning acting from the old Prince again...

Oh the irony when Nikolai is riding with his colleagues and they make the lewd comments about the 'pretty girls' by the side of the road - only to then straighten himself out and become all noble again when he realises it is Princess Marya who needs assistance.

The battle scenes were truly horrific...and there was Pierre in the middle of it like some kind of absurd benign war tourist. I don't think it unrealistic that he could have just got on a horse and approached the front like that - it wasn't exactly cordoned off...But finding his friend in the middle of it seems less likely!

Andrei's behaviour is just odd at times - get down, for god's sake, if you want to carry on serving your men.

Anatole did not deserve that :( Horrible, horrible.

I am delighted to realise that it is so long since I read the book that I can't actually remember what happens to Helene. So next week will be a genuine unfolding of the story for me.
