OP posts:

We finished it last night. I did find the court episodes dragged a little. One of the jaw droppers for me was when one of the policemen - Andy something - was heard calling in the RAV4's licence plate. I can't understand how anyone could believe he wasn't reading that from a vehicle right in front of his eyes.

MrsHooolie · 11/01/2016 18:31

Compelling to watch.
We finished episode 8 today, will watch the last two tonight.
So tragic that he spent his 20's and 30's in prison and missed his children growing up.
I think he is not guilty of the murder. I thought his lawyers were brilliant despite what happened.

Roomba · 11/01/2016 20:55

Just finished this and found it utterly gripping.

How could anyone claim that Steven Avery had a fair trial?

And poor Brendan just broke my heart. I was so angry watching the police interview that I was shouting at the TV. I seriously considered having a talk with my son (only 10) about what his legal rights are - whatever anyone else in authority may tell him - I got so riled up about it!

And his conversations with his mother - 'Do you like your lawyer', 'Well he has the same favourite animal as me so I guess he's alright'... 'What does inconsistent mean?', 'I don't know'.

I think the UK has a much better pre trial process due to the sub judice rules meaning that the whole trial by media thing doesn't happen to the same extent here. I was shocked watching the police, lawyers and prosecutors discussing the case to such an extent and giving opinions and facts that were just not true. How can that not prejudice a jury?

VirginiaWoofs · 11/01/2016 22:39

I just watched episode 1 - found it very dull! Does it get better?

1 hour of talking heads seems a bit much

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 11/01/2016 22:45

No way did they get a fair trial.

No blood stains, etc in Stevens trailer?
His on record blood sample had been tampered with making it look likely the suv bloodstain was planted.
The search was a total farce and throws doubt on the key been there originally.
If someone else killed her then I guess the Avery yard is an ideal place to dump the truck/body.
And if someone was planning it then an ideal opportunity would be the afternoon she was going to the Avery yard.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 11/01/2016 22:47

And it was shocking when I realised the trial was ten years ago! Brendan is 26 or 27 now!

I really hope there's some sort of retrial.

OffRoader · 11/01/2016 22:51

I watched the first episode and couldn't get into it at all, does it get better?

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 11/01/2016 22:53

Yes, gets better. The first episode is kind of the back story of the rape and his release. The actual murder onwards I found more intriguing,,,,,,,maybe not the best description for a murder but yes it gets better.

vEGANvERA · 11/01/2016 23:59

i just knew there would be a thread
i couldn't wait till get to bed tonight to watch another episode
already planning to rewatch!
someone above summed it up for me - so hard to believe you are watching real life
that poor man - i guess from reading threads he is convicted
i;m already suspicious of the brother and his friend......

GinBunny · 12/01/2016 00:09

Oh so glad I found this thread! I watched episode 1 last night and was interested enough but DH was a bit meh. Have persuaded him to stick with it. Thanks all.

suzannecaravaggio · 12/01/2016 00:42

I gave up about halfway through #1, couldnt get into it
I'll give it another go....

PiperChapstick · 12/01/2016 01:34

I've just git on episode left to watch and have shed tears more than once. It's so addictive yet so hard to watch at the same time, I can't remember the last time I was so gripped by a documentary.

Episode 4 was the hardest to watch

MorrisZapp · 12/01/2016 09:55

Watched episode three last night. I got so upset and angry for Brendan I was unable to sleep.

I've told DP that I don't think I can watch any more. I don't want to Google plot spoilers but from this thread it seems things get worse for Brendan and those vile cunts get away with it.

I know that these issues exist, and part of me feels guilty for turning away but I just can't watch any more. DP will be so disappointed as we really enjoyed watching the first two together.

Brendan's mother is also poorly equipped to advocate for her son. Nobody in this family has the capacity to fully engage with the forces they're up against.

But to set up a clearly learning disabled boy in that way, no I just can't watch.

RuggerHug · 12/01/2016 13:03

There shouldn't be as many of these but if anyone is finished this and looking for something similar the paradise lost films are as rage - inducing but extremely hard to watch, especially the crime details :( about 3 teenagers wrongly convinced on a false admission by someone like Brendan for murdering 3 children.

abbieanders · 12/01/2016 15:40

I don't know whether Steven is guilty. My overarching feeling is that the prosecution didn't prove their case at all - all they really proved was that they are completely incompetent as investigators or conspirators and are completely thick.

Mind you, apart from the defence team, there wasn't a single intelligent person on it, which I found extraordinary. How us there any community where people are so unremittingly stupid? The jury were clearly half witted - their findings were utterly perverse. How could they find the first count and not the second? What could possibly have been the reasoning behind the verdict? It makes no sense.

It's not possible to be outraged on poor Brendan's behalf. He didn't even understand the difference between the investigating police and his own defence team. How could he be considered competent to be interviewed? Especially alone? And Steven. I don't believe he's capable of covering up a crime in the manner in which he would have had to. He's not bright. He's not educated. He's not out in the world or sophisticated. He doesn't even appear to have much cunning. He could never have cleaned up that effectively. It's just bizarre from start to finish.

JustRosieHere · 12/01/2016 20:56

I'd really love to hear from a juror about how they changed the minds of 7 people. I can't say 100% Steven didn't do it but there was definitely reasonable doubt. Poor Brendan though, how is there not a process to have your appeal case heard outside the state? It's all too internal which is very bizarre.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 12/01/2016 21:01

The defence lawyers were incredible , sadly they were fighting a lost cause .
So many holes in the case from the start.
Ken Kratz is currently forbidden from practising law due to indecency - hope he gets his comeuppance .
There is a part in episode 7 or 8 where they are waiting for the verdict . Avery 'S mam cooks a burger then sits on her own eating it . It really made me cry , poor woman .

bunique · 12/01/2016 21:31

I think it was Dolores Avery that I felt sorry for most of all. What a life.

abbieanders · 12/01/2016 21:36

Do you suppose the implication that the family is all incesty is true?

MrsHooolie · 12/01/2016 22:35

I don't know abbieanders. It wouldn't surprise me,there are certainly some colourful characters in the family. However,Steven and his parents seem like decent people to me?I felt so sad in the first episode that he missed his children growing up,he obviously loves them very much.

abbieanders · 12/01/2016 22:42

Yeah, I was just wondering because there were what seemed like hints that the extended family were isolated from the rest of the community, very insular, iq issues, all that. Entirely purient curiosity, I fully admit.

GlitteryFluff · 12/01/2016 22:47

Rosie apparently two of the jurors were to do with mantiwoc police dept - one an office clerk and one's father was an officer. So those two were probably not allowing anyone change their two minds and heavily forcing/manipulating the others to go with guilty.

NickiFury · 13/01/2016 22:28

Brendan reminds me of my son who has autism. I can see that Brendan has issues with receptive language and doesn't know what they're on about half the term let alone have the ability to counter it and defend himself. I could see my son sitting there agreeing with everything because a. He can't understand them properly or pick up the nuances and b. He can't find the language to answer them properly so just goes along with everything. It's actually making me cry to watch it, it seems so clear to me. How can no one see it?

Deux · 13/01/2016 23:17

I normally binge watch series on Netflix but I just can't do it with this.

I'm finding the whole thing so sad. So much prejudice against this family.

I'm staggered at the press conferences that took place before the trial; that the police can air their evidence; that Avery was so clearly considered guilty before the pre trial hearing.

That poor boy being interrogated without an appropriate adult. So obvious that he was just agreeing to what they said.

I'm really not sure if I'll watch the rest as I found it too hard. Funny how that key fob wasn't there in the first search.

Surely the criminal justice process is better here in the UK?

BringMeTea · 14/01/2016 02:55

Deux not sure it could be any worse! This is still haunting me. I am very glad it has all the worldwide publicity though.
