Anyone else watching? I am really enjoying it, and have either read more Dickens than I realised, or at least the right books.
I had always imagined Little Nell to be a bit younger though.

I'm enjoying it. Does anyone else think Marley's killer will turn out to be the dour-looking copper (Bucket's side-kick)?

I thought it was terrible. I like Dickens. I think you only like Dickens for the use of language, without that it's silly.

Shock I like Dickens for the characters Grin

I assumed it would have to be a real character.

I'm really enjoying it. I'm wondering how far they will take the time-line and how close they will stick to the plots.

It's playing out more or less in real time so far but I wonder if there will be a fast forward to Miss Havisham's wedding and/or a pregnant Honoria Barbary or to next Christmas and a turning point for Scrooge?

And of course if they were to follow time lines as per the books the demise of all of Nell, Nancy, Sykes and Fagin would be imminent.

pizzaeatingmonkey · 09/01/2016 13:25

Grunt yeah, I know! I meant he is a far better actor than a comedian, even though he is a good comedian, I wish I hadn't mentioned it now Blush

SuffolkNWhat · 10/01/2016 23:12

I'm starting to think it'll be Compyson as murderer hence why he stands up Miss Haversham (on the run)

SurelyYoureJokingMrFeynman · 10/01/2016 23:26

Ooh, Compeyson! Think you could be onto something there.

NewBook · 11/01/2016 14:26

I am so awkward i like Arthur really much ... and somehow ship him with Amelia :( i am such a bad person hahaha i think the actors have a lot of chemistry

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 11/01/2016 18:44

They have a lot of chemistry between them. He in particular conveys that they could still be friends if he could put the resentment behind him and if she could recognise their father was unfair to Arthur in his lifetime and the will wasn't fair.

NewBook · 11/01/2016 20:40

hahaha i didn't meant the friendship like chemistry but the other one if you understand i wished they weren't brother and sister in Dickensian :( and again i am so awkward

I wondered about Compeyson when Inspector Bucket found the mysterious 'C' in Marley's appointment book. Apart from the Cratchits, is there anyone else who starts with a C?

OP posts:
LassWiTheDelicateAir · 11/01/2016 21:50

What is Compeyson's motive?

And how did Marley's wallet get to Fagin?

SurelyYoureJokingMrFeynman · 12/01/2016 13:09

Thinking about it, I'm less disturbed by Satis House being in the middle of a town, because Dickens' model for Satis House is in the middle of a town, and he transported it to the countryside for the novel.

I know, it's the novel that counts. But in my head Satis House has always been round the corner from Jasper's Gate and Mr Crisparkle's.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 14/01/2016 00:02

Tonight's was great. I just wanted to say -

"Arthur you are an idiot; go home; tell Amelia how evil he is"

"Bill -take Nancy -emigrate- there's still hope for you"

Fairiesarereal · 14/01/2016 10:00

I agree Lass, hindsight is a wonderful thing Grin

Ok, so for all you Dicken's buffs how come Miss Havisham's dog is called Jip? Isn't Jip in 'David Copperfield'? please tell me he makes it out of the Thames

Reapwhatyousow · 14/01/2016 21:39

It was a great episode this evening. I hope it brings new people to the pleasure of Dickens It has better story lines than Eastenders and is much richer linguisticly. I'm just off to check on my napary!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 14/01/2016 21:53

I was worried about the well being of that little dog tonight.

EElisavetaOfBelsornia · 14/01/2016 22:45

I expect she named subsequent dogs after the dear departed one, Fairies.

Tuppence Middleton is in War and Peace too. I gorged on all the previous episodes on Sunday then watched W+P - din't know where or when I was! Smile
Was it like a 2 for 1 on the filming with the sets for Dickensian back to back with W+P?

CeeBeeBee · 14/01/2016 23:44

It's Amelia who's in War and Peace, Lasswi. Anyway, I like her as Miss Havisham. Feel really bad that she's fallen for a cad.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 15/01/2016 01:13

Yes, I did know that, not sure why I typed Honoria.

Jip was Dora Spenlow's dog- quite the most vacuous female Dickens' character (and there is stiff competition for that title)

Poor Jip .I did wonder if Jip might be rescued by Compeyson being spotted by the Artful Dodger or Bill who would pull the bag out in case it had something valuable in it. If they had written in parts for Gaffer or Lizzie Hexham from Our Mutual Friend chances are they would have been out on the river and see it.

If I have a quibble unless there is a major plot development involving the Bumbles they are becoming tiresome filler.

Agent160 · 15/01/2016 17:34

I agree Lass. I was saying to DH just last night that I think one of the Bumbles must be the killer. Otherwise why are they there?!

That's my only grumble though.

diddl · 15/01/2016 18:32

Was it alluded to in Great Expectations that Arthur was gay?

Or did his father leave him nothing because he thought he would be shit at business?

He's a bloody annoying arse!

Who do we think killed Marley?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 15/01/2016 18:57

I honestly don't remember if Arthur has an active part in GE at all let alone it being hinted he is gay.

Compeyson hardly appears. He gets mentioned several times by Magwitch and he is in the police boat which tracks Magwitch down at the end. Magwitch pulls him in to the water and he drowns but otherwise his actions are off-screen, as is Arthur (I think)

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 15/01/2016 19:01

I have no idea who kills Marley !!

Re Havisham pater's will, I think it was because Amelia was the daughter of his first wife and Arthur the son of his second wife who was his housekeeper whom he married in secret.
