Some spoilers that aren't particularly spoilery here. And as suspected, Patricia Hodge will be playing Bertie's formidable mother!

Not a huge amount but closure and happy endings!

diddl · 25/12/2015 22:57

Are we all happy now?

Chippednailvarnish · 25/12/2015 23:02

Did Edith marry Bertie?
Did she shove Mary down the stairs?

Grin
ABetaDad1 · 25/12/2015 23:12

Chipped - Edith married Bertie. Mary was all lovely and generous throughout. She got pregnant. Anna Bates (Lady Mary's ladies maid) had her waters break in Lady Mary's bedroom and so she gave birth there and Lady Mary was in attendance.

No one died.

Anna Bates had a live baby.

Lord Merton didn't have terminal anaemia after all and he went to live with Isobel Crawley.

Oh and Barrow was appointed butler as Carson got the shakes and he semi retire to be an elder statesman guiding proceedings.

Did I miss anything?

MuttonWasAGoose · 25/12/2015 23:24

I can't believe I watched that entire show, every episode of every series. It was rubbish but I still watched it. It's one of the few shows I watched as it aired, instead of online. Half the fun was scoffing at the stupidity of it. And then the property and fashion porn was a major part, too.

It was dumb but fun.

Chippednailvarnish · 25/12/2015 23:34

Thanks Abeta !

I was still hoping for a Dallas style showdown between Mary and Edith!!

birdboo · 26/12/2015 00:06

I'm half way through and I can't believe how sappy it is.

pizzaeatingmonkey · 26/12/2015 10:29

Don't forget Mosely became a full time teacher and got a free cottage and Cora's maid said she would be seeing a lot of him. Mrs Patmore is getting friendlier with Egg's dad. Daisy is moving onto the farm and Andy will be proposing v soon. Rawbert saw Cora doing a speech to the great unwashed at the hospital and is sooo proud of her. Fat boy and Mr Mary are becoming 2nd hand car dealers. I think that's everything.

YouBastardSockBalls · 26/12/2015 10:38

Mary's pregnant, and totally happy for her maid's child to be brought up in the nursery with the others so that Anna can be a working mother yeah right

ABetaDad1 · 26/12/2015 10:38

mutton - it was a all a bit comfy and sickly sweet. Sort of like Coronation Street with coronets.

I enjoyed watching the scenery mostly. The fashion was fantastically well researched not sure if houses really were decorated that way though. Back then.

The purchasing of a 'new hairdryer for Lady Mary was a big thing.

We3KingyOfOblomovAre · 26/12/2015 10:40

Thought it was very weak. Liked first series. Since then just got weaker and more pansy. Last night really was soft and namby.

Cerseirys · 26/12/2015 10:41

I started the thread but am in Australia at the moment so haven't seen the Xmas special and haven't read any of the posts above. Am dying to see if my prediction has come true so roll on bedtime for DS so I can hunt it down on a streaming site!

Downton has jumped the shark! Every single person ended up in a happy couple! Except Barrow, but he is now head butler, yay! ☺

MuttonWasAGoose · 26/12/2015 11:54

Barrow and Spratt should have gotten together.

MelanieCheeks · 26/12/2015 12:07

DH is more of a fan than me, but has an annoying habit of trying to guess the plot line out loud. So we had a commentary of

"Oh no, not the hairdryer!"
"No, don't get in the car with him!"
"He's up the roof without a ladder! Ooooh, more nails!!!"

etc.

diddl · 26/12/2015 12:08

I did love Edith's wedding dress.

It has all been daft for ages though.

The acceptance of Marigold.

Mary taking Anna to London to see a specialist!

Violet accepting the way that Denker spoke to her!

TheBestChocolateIsFree · 26/12/2015 13:22

I've watched bits but not all of the Xmas episode but frankly the only plot line I genuinely cared about was Isabel (Isobel?) getting to live happily ever after with lovely Lord M. So as long as that happened I'm happy. Gutted for Barrow having to live celibately ever after. I think he should have gone to London to be Cousin Rosamond's head of household, and have the time of his life shagging his way through the membership of the Junior Ganymede club, and half the Drones.

ABetaDad1 · 26/12/2015 13:26

To be fair I missed most of the first two series. I took me abut 5 minutes to catch up when I started watching the final series. It wasn't really very taxing.

I was brought up on Brideshead Revisited it took real stamina to watch that.

Fauchelevent · 26/12/2015 13:36

Loved that Patricia Hodge was Bertie's Mum. Kept expecting her to go "Mirrranda!" though.

Hated Carson less in this, really disliked the 28-year-old-baby Daisy's hair and was very happy for Edith and Thomas

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/12/2015 13:36

I adored it. Every last minute of it. It was like having a bath in molten chocolate. I'll miss it now. Xmas Sad

MuttonWasAGoose · 26/12/2015 14:01

I wish we'd seen Mrs Crawley addressed at least once as Viscountess (or whatever she's called).

diddl · 26/12/2015 14:02

Did they actually getmarried?

MuttonWasAGoose · 26/12/2015 14:33

She said as soon as possible and several months elapsed. It's not like she needed a trousaeu (sp?)

diddl · 26/12/2015 14:35

Yes, time did move on.

It wasn't referred to at all, was it?

MuttonWasAGoose · 26/12/2015 15:46

Nope. And that annoyed me. Some mention of her title would have been nice.
