ITV’s six episode thriller series Unforgotten from former ITV drama executives Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes’ fledgling indie Mainstreet Pictures will premiere on Thursday October 8th at 9pm, it has been announced.

Penned by Undeniable scribe Chris Lang, Unforgotten tells the story of an 39 year old cold investigation into the murder of a boy who was killed in 1976. The modern day investigation is run by DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan, who must re-examine the evidence and investigate the key suspects – Robert Greaves, Frank Philip Cross, Lizzie Wilton and Eric Slater – in order to close the case. The series utilises a multi-stranded narrative, set in different parts of the country, which explores and connects each of the principle characters.

The six-parter is produced by Mainstreet Pictures and features a large cast that includes Sanjeev Bhaskar (The Kumars), Nicola Walker (Last Tango In Halifax), Trevor Eve (Waking The Dead), Bernard Hill (The Grid), Ruth Sheen (Our Girl), Tom Courtenay (The Dresser), Gemma Jones (Marvellous), Brian Bovell (Death in Paradise), Cherie Lunghi (Casualty), Hannah Gordon (Hustle), Claire Goose (Mount Pleasant) Tamzin Malleson (Midsomer Murders), Peter Egan (Downton Abbey), and Frances Tomelty (Catastrophe). Ripper Street helmer Andy Wilson was the director.

fuzzpig I guess it is like my late-husband shouting at the TV when I watched a police drama, "They wouldn't say that." "Tsk, just read him his rights!" "That's stupid" (He was a Police Inspector!)

But I shouted at the TV if he watched a school drama. "As if that would happen." "That's downright inappropriate." "Expel him!" (I was a teacher)

OK - this has been puzzling me. Why is is Unforgotten? Isn't that the same as "remembered"? Confused

sadwidow28 · 13/10/2015 12:57

Could also be the same as 'finally found'. Perhaps it will become clearer as we watch the episodes. Maybe there is a reason that Jimmy is considered 'Forgotten' at this stage.

There is an interview with Chris Lang (writer) here:

Interestingly, he says that he has already started writing the 2nd series. If Series 1 does well, the 2nd series will spring into production (different story obviously).

I thought when the woman with dementia said "I want to leave.", was very chilling. Her husband, one of those on the list, seems very controlling (as does the son with the beamer).

Also loved Hannah Gordon's cursing moment. I had to take my jaw off the floor, she's brilliant.

I'm enjoying this and can't wait until tomorrow night for the second part. The cast is superb.

I see I already posted this. However, re watched last night and really into it.

I'm getting somewhat mixed up re characters especially as Nicola Walker and Frances Tomelty are both in this and River Confused

sadwidow28 · 14/10/2015 15:24

I agree that "I want to leave", was indeed a very chilling moment when Claire (Gemma Jones) expressed he heart-felt wishes after she had scalded herself under the hot water tap. Then it became more chilling when her husband Eric (Tom Courtney) said "We can't leave" and "We'll be alright my Darling".

Eric Slater was a former book keeper who worked at Arlingham House in the late 70s.

Hi Sad,

Funny moment re the post in River Grin What i like about this programme is the wonderful women characters, especially the older ones, plus the men are also interesting in that they don't have a significant younger model on their wrist. It must be so liberating for all concerned, which is why the acting is so good.

It seems equal somehow. So good to see older actors whom we always admired getting good roles.

sadwidow28 · 14/10/2015 18:41

Hi Elendon

If I watch any more dramas, I will have Lady Mary from Downton Abbey marrying Susie from River.

Gemma from Dr Foster will offer to be the sports medic in Unforgotten.

Who is the actor who plays the male forencis scientist?
Have checked the IMDB website, cant see him on there and can't remember his screen name. Have seen him in something else recently too.

Lemonfizzypop · 14/10/2015 18:56

The male forensic scientist was the customer bloke in Miranda if that helps!

Elendon · 14/10/2015 19:04

I bet Nicola Walker and Stellan Skarsgard are in the next BBC Wallander series, and they are a couple.

The80sweregreat · 14/10/2015 19:51

sadwidow28 · 14/10/2015 21:55

Enjoyed the first episode. Weird seeing Tom Courtenay, don't think I've seen him since his Billy Liar days, one of my all time favourite films, he looks so different (unsurprisingly).
Looking forward to the next episode, felt really sad when they found the pic of the boy,. Of course, I know it's not real, but still...

Helenluvsrob · 15/10/2015 07:45

I really enjoyed the pace and the cast. Good to see 2 police officers who get on well without death/divorce/drama/disease buggering things up.

What was his favourite btw? That Trevor Eve wanted to have with peas?

sadwidow28 · 15/10/2015 13:12

What was his favourite btw

We are not told - we see her peeling potatoes and there appears to be something like chicken legs in a casserole bowl, some celery ......

Fiderer, agreed, my trusty TV quick last week said the female DCI is divorced with two sons at Uni and living with her dad ( peter egan plays him)
Sanjeev 's character is married with kids.
He said something to her when they met at the house ( about 3 minutes in) but despite rewinding it i couldnt work out what she replied. It s not relevant but sound on these dramas really annoy me!
Looking forwards to tonight.

sadwidow28 · 15/10/2015 16:28

Hmmm - the on-line character summaries suggest that Sunny is a single-dad.

When they met at the house, Sunny had had a late night with his daughter Gemma who had been crying. Sunny says, "You're a woman..." and Cassie said, "I believe so" so Sunny asked why women cry when [something?] Cassie said that she cried with her dad the other night. Sunny asked, "What did he do?" and Cassie answered "Hugged me".

So the fact that he was asking Cassie for advice regarding 'women' suggests that there isn't a DM in the Sunny household.

DCI Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker)

Age: 46

Following her divorce, Stuart is living with her father Martin and has two sons at university. There are certain glimpses of her private life that show you this is a woman who is not with her husband anymore. You don't know why.

DS Sunil "Sunny" Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar)

Age: 46

Khan is a single father trying his best to connect with his teenage girls. He now has to balance his personal woes with trying to crack what initially appears to be an impossible case.

Sadwidow28, thank you for that! I rewound twice to hear what they said but couldnt get it.
Poor sunny.
Cassie's dad looked sad too.
I hope tonight is as good.

sadwidow28 · 15/10/2015 18:43

The80s I think there is more to Cassie's Dad (Martin) than we know. He suggested he was always busy - as he completed the crossword. He said he would find the time to finish mopping the kitchen floor when Cassie was called out to work.

I may be projecting - my late-husband was a retired police inspector in his latter days (he died aged 64 yrs old). He did the Guardian crossword every morning and we were totally supportive of each other as team. But I think there were times when DH secretly envied me (18 years younger) in my flurry of building my career. He was proud of me - and he certainly helped me to grow my wings. It was just sometimes that I would be flying and he clearly thought back to when he was the brightest star in the ascendant.

And please don't feel sorry for my late-DH. When he retired from the police, I agreed that he should use his pension lump-sum to get his MSc and then for him to re-train as a teacher of children with special needs. He ended up teaching at a school within the catchment area where he was a Sergeant - so parents' evenings had an 'added edge' Wink

The80sweregreat · 15/10/2015 18:52

It was nice your late DH was able to put his skills to good use once he retired. He sounds a very intelligent man. I am sorry your a widow though, my dad has been a widower for 5 years and he will never get over it. ( he is 93 now)
I hope you are keeping busy. Its true what my sister in law said about bereavement, you never get over it, you learn to live with it.
Her own mum died when she was 15!
Anyway, thanks again for the dialogue. I do struggle sometimes to hear what they say..!

FawnDrench · 15/10/2015 18:57

That's a lovely post sadwidow. Really liked the bit about the parents' evening!

Counting down to 8 pm, and can't wait to see how this all develops.
It's a joy to watch, and I'm relishing some fine acting from practically all the cast members for a change.

sadwidow28 · 15/10/2015 19:05

I am fine The80sweregreat.

I was widowed 14 years ago when I was 46 years old. My 'new normal' doesn't include another partner, that is a life choice I have made. I live with my beautiful Border Collie who I rescued aged 6 years and he is now over 16 years old.

Sleep still doesn't come easily to me - hence I watch a lot of TV when the dog is snoozing at my feet, or I wake ridiculously early in a panic at 3am-4am in the morning and need something to fall asleep to on my laptop. I have found that dogs are not good for discussing TV programmes with, so I love the fact that I recently found Mumsnet Telly Addicts.

If I keep up this rate, I will be on every thread!

But I love the chats and discussions, so I thank everyone who takes the time to post. You are each making a difference to the quality of MY life. (And the dog says I am much quieter and not shouting at the TV so much Grin )
