ITV’s six episode thriller series Unforgotten from former ITV drama executives Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes’ fledgling indie Mainstreet Pictures will premiere on Thursday October 8th at 9pm, it has been announced.

Penned by Undeniable scribe Chris Lang, Unforgotten tells the story of an 39 year old cold investigation into the murder of a boy who was killed in 1976. The modern day investigation is run by DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan, who must re-examine the evidence and investigate the key suspects – Robert Greaves, Frank Philip Cross, Lizzie Wilton and Eric Slater – in order to close the case. The series utilises a multi-stranded narrative, set in different parts of the country, which explores and connects each of the principle characters.

The six-parter is produced by Mainstreet Pictures and features a large cast that includes Sanjeev Bhaskar (The Kumars), Nicola Walker (Last Tango In Halifax), Trevor Eve (Waking The Dead), Bernard Hill (The Grid), Ruth Sheen (Our Girl), Tom Courtenay (The Dresser), Gemma Jones (Marvellous), Brian Bovell (Death in Paradise), Cherie Lunghi (Casualty), Hannah Gordon (Hustle), Claire Goose (Mount Pleasant) Tamzin Malleson (Midsomer Murders), Peter Egan (Downton Abbey), and Frances Tomelty (Catastrophe). Ripper Street helmer Andy Wilson was the director.

Eric Slater really is a nasty piece of work. I can't imagine someone like that, in that environment not being involved with the Fenwicks. His poor wife...

fuzzpig · 30/10/2015 17:35

Fantastic episode. I wonder who the other victim is, another body unearthed somewhere? Fr Rob did look very menacing at the end but surely he wouldn't actually do something so obvious (and it wouldn't actually stop him getting identified for the robbery).

I am possibly being stupid but wasn't Lizzie arrested? How did she end up back at home and then running off?

Would the abortion have been a back alley type thing? Good call about maybe the baby being Fr Rob's and she kept it and that's why he's in touch still.

I can't believe there are only 2 episodes left. This has been brilliant, I don't want it to end!

I thought the little scenes with Cassie and her son were really lovely.

Not only was Lizzie arrested, but she was charged:

Desk Sergeant: Elizabeth Wilton, you've been charged with assault and the intent to rob, under Section Eight of the Theft Act 1968. You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention now anything you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence. Do you understand the charge?
Lizzie: Yes.

She was then let out on bail conditions. (The Duty Desk Sergeant/Charging Officer clearly felt that she was not a current threat to her victim - he's dead - nor any family member.) She will have to attend her local police station at least one a week otherwise a warrant will be issued for her immediate arrest.

However, under bail conditions she must always inform the police station of any formal change of address. I think she has run back onto the streets and homelessness. That is what she did aged 15 years when she was being sexually abused. Lizzie is behaving as she did when she was known as Beth - run away and hide. How sad!

Ah I see thank you.

I wonder what is going to happen to her :(

I also wonder how they are going to show what actually happened. I guess they'd have to choose younger actors that resemble the perpetrators. And will they do it in blurry flashback form, or do a proper detailed flashback?

sadwidow28 · 30/10/2015 18:30

Fuzzpig said: I wonder who the other victim is, another body unearthed somewhere?

All we have is Sunny taking a telephone call:

"Call just came into the CID office. Looks like we've got another victim."

So CID have linked this victim to the Jimmy Sullivan case immediately. Hmmm

Would Sunny have said "they've found another body" if it was a victim linked to Arlingham House?

We were left with:

  • Fr Rob looking menacing over Shiela (Charity Group Secretary who is going to identify the CCTV image of the burglar the next day)
  • But could Fr Rob have done something to cause his own suicide having lost his wife and daughters?
  • Lizzie can't face up to her past and has run away from Ray
  • Claire Slater who is starting to remember her violent husband's past even through her dementia.

It won't be Shirley Cross .... she has always known that Sir P was mixed up in the wrong crowd and chose to ignore it as they built a fabulously wealthy lifestyle. She is already known as "Lady Shirley Cross" (that was bestowed on her as the wife of "Sir Phillip Cross"). Even as the wife of a Baron (which was offered to Sir P) she will continue to be known as "Lady Shirley Cross" because it was lifetime peerage offered to Sir P.

Have I missed anybody?

im not getting the excitement shared by others on this thread re this episode.

It was what it was - an episode of a series.

Floundering · 30/10/2015 20:32

Well off you trot then Sansoora, You watch the series & leave us to analyse the excellent script!

quirkychick · 30/10/2015 21:28

But another "victim" may not be a body. Could it be the man in the photo who Frankie C was nailing to a workbench? The Guardian article said that Sir Philip's flashbacks showed Jimmy being crucified - I must have missed that or is it making an assumption?

Callmesausage · 30/10/2015 22:23

Fabulous episode, can't wait until
Next week. Does anybody know the name of the actress that played the sister of the person Slater attacked? I've definitely seen her in things years ago, but can't remember her name.

wigglesrock · 30/10/2015 22:49

I'm a bit with Sansoora I thought that episode was a bit underwhelming, could the call to CID not just be linked to the graffiti and the broken window at Lizzies? I'm not sure about Jimmys mum - I think she might know more. I also think Frankie/Phillip C is just a big red herring - he's as dodgy as all get out and he knows something but I don't think he's Jimmys killer.

sadwidow28 · 30/10/2015 23:34

Sansoora ............. come back!

Of course it is okay to watch it as an unfolding drama. But "Unforgotten" is so well written that there are some clues to engage those of us who love to work out what MIGHT be happening.

I didn't spot that the opening credits held clues until the80sweregreat and Fiderer spotted the possibility.

ok ive just watched again and makes more sense now :)

tho we seem to have 2 lots of £50, one for a possible abortion and one for the payment of the house that they were 50 short

agree claire wanted to leave then the accident happened

surely the son les? can see his mum is being abused, unless its him and not eric doing it, tho think its hubby as he is a bully

hope lizze hasnt committed suicide, she left a note saying sorry (my dh did the same) tho obv he wasnt a rasict and didnt tortue people

les/son now relieses his mums ramblings are nutty

priest will be seen on cctv and will racquel/sectatary rat on him, assumed must be blurred ot else priest easily recognized

sure there are more questions but im tired

cherrytree63 · 31/10/2015 00:22

Callme...I think the actress is Sheila Steafel. She's been in loads of stuff as you say

sadwidow28 · 31/10/2015 01:04

Blondeshavemorefun Yay.... another one trying to figure out the clues.

So - to answer some questions:

  1. There ARE 2 x£50
(a) Eric and Claire Slater were short of £50 when they bought the house, and their friend Terry Miller lent it to them. He brought the cash round in pound notes. (So what is so special about that house that Eric says they can't move?) (b) Jimmy borrowed £50 for Jo-Jo's abortion.
  1. Les Slater suspects that his Mum is being abused by his father, but Claire continues to say she 'slipped'/'it was an accident'. Les has clearly tolerated his father's outbursts for years because he did not flinch when Eric swept the breakfast plates off the table. He did assert himself though and told his father to "calm down".

I think after Claire's break-down in the garden, Les now knows that there is something sinister about his father.

Episode 4

Les: Mum! Mum...
Claire: Maybe felt I'd... I'd already put so much in to our new life here, with you boys and finding this lovely house and making all our new friends. I didn't want to give it all up.
Les: Mum. I don't know what you're talking about. Let's get you in...
Claire: Then he had his accident, so he wouldn't have been able to hurt anyone anymore anyway.
Les: What... Sorry?
Claire: I think I just tried to bury it all, Les.
Les: What did you say? You said "hurt anyone". What do you mean?
Claire: And now with my head the way it is and the police asking all these questions, it's starting to swirl around in my head. And the problem is, Les, I... I've absolutely no idea what's real and what isn't.

The ramblings are not 'nutty' - she is coping with Dementia and also trying to dig deep in her past and remember her original suspicions about her husband. (He used to stay out all night) Could Eric be a 'closet' homosexual? It wasn't so easy to be open about sexuality in the 1970s. (Although the Sexual Offences Act 1967 had de-criminalised homosexuality, it still wasn't a world of acceptance)

  1. According to Sheila (Administrative Assistant at the Charity) the police have a clear image of the burglar. Fr Rob has asked to use Sheila's spare bedroom having confessed his 'dalliance' with Jo-Jo to his wife (Grace):

Fr Rob: Just what I need. I just...
Sheila: Erm... You absolutely don't need to tell me anything, anything at all, but I just... I want you to know that if you did want someone to talk to...
Fr Rob: Thank you. I might just take you up on that some time.
Sheila: Well... I'll let you get settled in.
Oh erm, there's one bit of good news.
The police have found some CCTV footage of someone entering the community hall at the time of the burglary.
They reckon they've got a pretty good screen grab of his face.
They've asked me to go down there tomorrow, see if I recognise him from the estate. Which is good, isn't it?
Fr Rob: Yes. Yes.

Sansoora ............. come back!

I hadn't gone anywhere Wink

Of course it is okay to watch it as an unfolding drama. But "Unforgotten" is so well written that there are some clues to engage those of us who love to work out what MIGHT be happening.

Yes, thats it, its an unfolding drama for me. Im loving the series and Ive had to buy the series pass on Itunes because its not available on TV where I live. Last nights episode just wasn't up to the standard of the others but then maybe they slipped in a dull episode in order to have us on the edge of our seats with the next two.

Curtis - still has me really worried for him. He's going right off the rails Grin

ButterflyUpSoHigh · 31/10/2015 08:22

I disagree that this wasn't a good episode we found out so much from it.

I wondered if the sorry note could be from Curtis after he came to his senses. He was collecting all his work back up.

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/10/2015 09:16

Meant Aren't nutty. Ie dementia

Thank for explaining other stuff :)

987flowers · 31/10/2015 09:19

Hello, I've been lurking but would also like to join in!

Did anyone else wonder whether father R was going to seduce Raquel (can't remember her name in unforgotten) but we were given the impression that he was going to do her in? Could be way off there but just wondered as she obviously likes him and that might be his way of keeping her quiet!!

Sansoora · 31/10/2015 10:56

Going to the scene where the family are in the sitting room discussing the photos of the man being nailed to the work bench.

Sir Phillip says dont worry I will pay him off and his daughter says you'll pay Fenwick off? Sir Phillips hesitates before he says Yes, I will pay Fenwick off.

It was almost as if he meant someone else but went along with the ref to Fenwick my his daughter.

Just my tuppence worth.

Sansoora · 31/10/2015 10:57

Its 21.40 mins into the episode, immediately before the police come to the door.

Floundering · 31/10/2015 11:15

Think the pic of the hand & Jimmy's hand injury were 2 different tortures, (didn't Frankie's wife point out the hand was white?)

Which even more shows Frankie was capable of repeated cruel acts including the finger crunching. (Shudder)

Also he tells his son he has paid Fenwick off before, so there is obviously a lot to hide.

The80sweregreat · 31/10/2015 13:33

Trevor eve looked weird in that old photo. If it was him..

Sansoora · 31/10/2015 14:01

Trevor eve looked weird in that old photo. If it was him.

I did wonder as well if it really was him. But then what does he have to gain from saying yes its me, if it wasnt.

Floundering · 31/10/2015 14:40

Yes really that photo could have been any hairy yoof from that era, couldn't it?! :)

Floundering · 31/10/2015 14:42

Do you think Frankie's daughter will rat on him to protect ber own professional reputation?
