ITV’s six episode thriller series Unforgotten from former ITV drama executives Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes’ fledgling indie Mainstreet Pictures will premiere on Thursday October 8th at 9pm, it has been announced.

Penned by Undeniable scribe Chris Lang, Unforgotten tells the story of an 39 year old cold investigation into the murder of a boy who was killed in 1976. The modern day investigation is run by DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan, who must re-examine the evidence and investigate the key suspects – Robert Greaves, Frank Philip Cross, Lizzie Wilton and Eric Slater – in order to close the case. The series utilises a multi-stranded narrative, set in different parts of the country, which explores and connects each of the principle characters.

The six-parter is produced by Mainstreet Pictures and features a large cast that includes Sanjeev Bhaskar (The Kumars), Nicola Walker (Last Tango In Halifax), Trevor Eve (Waking The Dead), Bernard Hill (The Grid), Ruth Sheen (Our Girl), Tom Courtenay (The Dresser), Gemma Jones (Marvellous), Brian Bovell (Death in Paradise), Cherie Lunghi (Casualty), Hannah Gordon (Hustle), Claire Goose (Mount Pleasant) Tamzin Malleson (Midsomer Murders), Peter Egan (Downton Abbey), and Frances Tomelty (Catastrophe). Ripper Street helmer Andy Wilson was the director.

Well what an episode that was! Totally gripping.
My theory is now utter pants but the peas still matter

Wonder who the second victim is?
I feared that Lizzie had harmed herself as she left the door open...
Surely Father Rob wasn't going to maim the church secretary woman - he looked very menacing.
Did Jojo have an abortion or not I wonder. And who was the baby's father?
When Curtis saw the pic of Jimmy in the paper he seemed to recognise him or had some sort of "aha" moment I thought.

Really interesting all the different reactions of the grown up children to their not-so-perfect parents isn't it.
So many people now affected all these years later.

I really can't wait another whole 7 days...

Floundering · 29/10/2015 22:15

I mean as in Eric isn't gay, maybe got chatted up & reacted violently but it all adds to his reputation as Mr Nasty.

Both Claire & Mrs Cross know more as I thought!

quirkychick · 29/10/2015 22:15

What did Eric's wife say at the end to her son, something about being in a wheelchair meant he couldn't hurt anyone any more? Is there a new body or a new victim, someone with similar injuries.

Floundering · 29/10/2015 22:26

I think she (Claire) was wanting to leave him but was trapped when Eric had his accident, thinking he couldn't hurt her or anyone else.

Ooh lightbulb moment !! The £50 Jimmy had for Jojo's abortion was nicked by Erskine & Lizzie, so maybe JoJo kept the baby & Fr Rob has been stealing sums of money to give her thinking it's his? Shock

quirkychick · 29/10/2015 22:30

Thanks Floundering.

I think so, the £50 was either for the abortion or the repayment (I think I said upthread). If repayment, did the theft lead to Jimmy's death?

Floundering · 29/10/2015 22:36

Cross has paid Fenwicks off several times before, think he was another real Mr Nasty.

Floundering · 29/10/2015 22:41

On re watching, it struck me that when Fr Robs daughter confronted him about the investigation he didn't say" Ididn't do it" "but don't make me answer that question "

Sweetsweetjane · 29/10/2015 23:03

How many episodes are there? Thanks sadwidow for inviting me to watch the show and join the thread. Most rewarding ??

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/10/2015 06:30

Floundering · 30/10/2015 07:06

IamactuallytherealJeff · 30/10/2015 08:03

I loving this drama but still need to catch up on last night!

Love the casting and does anyone else like how people's homes are so normal and fitting to the characters?

How many episodes will there be does anyone know?

By the way quirkychick - a great spot on the QPR logo. And you were right, it is Fr Rob who is the QPR supporter.

Cassie is reading through Jimmy's letters in episode 2:

"You'll be pleased to hear I went to church last week. Got chatting to the priest, Father Greaves. Turned out to be an all right bloke, even if he is a QPR supporter..."

I'll add that to our list.

Now this Fr Rob/Jo-Jo has me thinking....

We knew from Eric Slater that Fr Rob had 'a dalliance' with Jo-Jo. We also knew from Fr Rob's flashbacks that Jimmy had beaten him up.

But last night we found out that the £50 Jimmy had borrowed from the Fenwicks was for an abortion.

Although the Abortion Act 1967 had been implemented, it didn't actually give women a choice because it relied very heavily on two doctors making the decision based on risk. There was actually a huge abortion rally in 1976 where women protested to be given personal choice.

So, if the £50 needed for an abortion was stolen by Beth and Erskine, can we presume that Jo-Jo didn't manage to get an abortion? Was the pregnancy a result of the Fr Rob dalliance even though Jo-Jo was Jimmy's girlfriend at the time? If the child was subsequently born, does that explain why Fr Rob is still in contact with Jo-Jo after all these years? Does that also explain the missing church money? Is Fr Rob still 'helping' Jo-Jo after all these years? (The child would be 39 yrs old now.......... )

Is Fr Rob linked to Jimmy's death because he is the catalyst in a series of events?

  • Fr Rob gets Jo-Jo pregnant.
  • Jimmy borrows £50 for the abortion which Beth and Erskine steal.
  • Eric Slater is (perhaps) the book-keeper for the Fenwicks and calls in the £50 debt.
  • When Jimmy can't pay then Frankie C is called in.

Where does the policewoman's mother and the mother's lover come into it? Or is he a red herring?

sadwidow28 · 30/10/2015 13:34

carabos None of us have figured out why there is the mother's lover sub-plot.

The mum thing might just be that she was telling her dad that things that happened in the past (Jimmy's murder) are still important and those involved/concerned have a right to know. It may have given her dad the courage to show her the letters he'd found and had been agonising over.

Which obviously brought home to her on a personal level how painful it can be to have the past shown to you and how people aren't always how we remember them. And it's not just an intellectual police puzzle.

Though she seemed genuinely moved by Jimmy's mum so not sure it's a 'lesson' she needed.

Plus, poor Peter Egan.

Sunnymeg · 30/10/2015 14:49

I think Lizzie has run away and that Father Rob's wife has killed herself. I think his confession was too much for her after years of self sacrifice.

Either that or the victim is Shirley Cross who could have been another of Father Rob 's underage dalliances. It could have been him she was ringing to ask what she should do if the police question her,or she is a relation of the Fenwicks.

sadwidow28 · 30/10/2015 15:01

Fiderer

I think you have the sub-plot summed up accurately:

she was telling her dad that things that happened in the past (Jimmy's murder) are still important and those involved/concerned have a right to know

because when Cassie read the letters, she asked her Dad, "Why now?"

I think we are being shown 2 sides of a similar dilemma (albeit one is murder) - to pursue or not pursue. the rake up the past or leave it buried.

Sunnymeg

It could have been him she was ringing to ask what she should do if the police question her

Shirley Cross was speaking to Bella (daughter who is a Human Rights Lawyer).

Shirley: Yeah, there was stuff he did back then. Rumours I'd hear, just stuff we never talked about.
(BREATH QUIVERING)
Belle, I don't know what to do if the police start asking me questions. (CRYING)
What do I say?

[and Sir Philip was listening from the doorway]

Great links sadwidow, the comments on the Guardian article are interesting too. The info about abortion being legal but not accessible. As one of the comments says Jo-jo would have been underage, so that might make it even harder to get one. Especially, it might provoke questions about Father Rob.

fuzzpig · 30/10/2015 15:48

oh god 3 minutes into the latest episode and I want to cry. What a devastating scene at the Slaters' :( :(
