They are looking at a family food spend.

Family of 5 is spending well over national average - about £220pw.

THey are being slated for buying "expensive" sliced cheese. I'm a pretty savy shopper and I will buy sliced cheese and grated cheese after working out that they usually DON'T cost more per kilo to buy than a block.

Also apparently Greg Wallace is going to argue that margarine is not an unhealthy choice compared to butter! WTF? Apparently as it has less sat fat it is "healthier".

Watching with interest.

I've just been arguing with the TV about butter and margarine.

LovelyFriend · 03/09/2015 20:20

ah the expert to support margarine is from Unilever - so unbiased then!

I'mm shouting at the telly over the butter too

JuneFromBethesda · 03/09/2015 20:22

I don't know where they find these morons. I feel like shouting at the screen. And then Gregg and his sidekick sit there and say 'ooh, we could save them at least £50'.

Agree with you over butter vs marg. But sliced/grated cheese is surely much more expensive than a block?

LovelyFriend · 03/09/2015 20:22

:)

It's making me cross - the bollocks about butter being worse than spread, and the utter laziness of the family when it comes to cooking and ingredients.

How the fuck can a grown adult not identify a fucking LIME?!

LovelyFriend · 03/09/2015 20:24

Usually sliced/grated cheese is about £6 per kilo. Which is about the same for standard cheddar. It is often on offer and I stock up.

I like really strong/mature cheddar but the kids like bland crap so pre sliced/grated is fine.

The last series of this gave me serious rage, to the point I contacted the BBC. I work with a charity helping parents provide cheap healthy meals and addressing all the barriers to,doing so.

This programme caters to stupid reasonably well of people to thick to write a shopping list or think a day ahead. It's such a wasted opportunity and actually really insulting to people really trying to eat well for less. In a climate of foodbanks and benefit cuts it's disgusting to see prime time tv giving air time to the woman to whom cutting up a carrot was a revelation.

Argh!

Flisspaps · 03/09/2015 20:25

June - the value grated cheese I buy is cheaper per kilo than a block. And it lasts longer as I only stick it on food for DD instead of eating huge chunks!

JuneFromBethesda · 03/09/2015 20:25

Sainsbury's block mature cheddar £7.50 per kg
Sainsbury's grated mature cheddar £8 per kg
Sainsbury's sliced mature cheddar £8.33 per kg

JuneFromBethesda · 03/09/2015 20:26

Ok Fliss, fair enough Smile but for decent cheese block is surely cheaper!

I just started a spreadthread debate without seeing this one.

This family must be so lazy, not even bothering to make children a decent breakfast.

DH and I worked full time with 2 DD's and made more effort than this family. Did it mention if the mum works or not?

Flisspaps · 03/09/2015 20:27

Tesco Everyday Value Grated Cheese £5.00/kg

JuneFromBethesda · 03/09/2015 20:28

'Like many of us, she gets confused between 'use by' dates and 'sell by' dates'

Hmm
OddBoots · 03/09/2015 20:28

The mum works.

Flisspaps · 03/09/2015 20:29

And 'sell by' dates don't exist.

They're 'use by' or 'best before' Hmm

HeadFairy · 03/09/2015 20:30

I'm irritated by the butter thing too, if nothing else butter costs about 90p for a block but a packet of say Lurpak Lighter is £2.50. No argument. We always use butter.

AesopsMables · 03/09/2015 20:31

Thanks OddBoots

Still think she is thick as her chippies

Flisspaps · 03/09/2015 20:32

Was that chicken used for a roast for one person? Shock

tethersend · 03/09/2015 20:32

Why's the dad not being ridiculed for never cooking from scratch?

LovelyFriend · 03/09/2015 20:33

I buy own brand grated cheese but it has along 'use buy' date and 250gm packets are often on 2 for £3.

And I am less inclined to carve off chunks and munch too.

oooh they are doing the "MN chook" now. Will they make stock?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 03/09/2015 20:33

Greg Wallace is a tosser though. It is known.

Theknacktoflying · 03/09/2015 20:34

Leftovers save you money a d cut down on waste - what a gem!!

AesopsMables · 03/09/2015 20:34

Tethersend

I thought I saw earlier that the Mum wasn't happy about him cooking and he wanted to cook more.
